2 HISTORY OF GIS AND ESRI First Developed by Dr. Roger Tomlinson in Canada 1960 (CGIS Canadian geographic system) The system was designed to inventory land use and assist in the management of natural resources Environmental Systems Research Institute was founded in PRIOR TO 2001 ARC/INFO s a command line software product ArcView a desktop developed in the 1990 s In the summer of 2001-ESRIR introduced ArcGIS ArcMap and ArcCatalog ArcGIS 10.1 debuts, enabling users to deliver any GIS resource as a web service, putting geographic information in the hands of more people 2012 ArcGIS Online is introduced as an online cloud-based mapping system for organizations that offers collaborative tools for cataloging, visualizing, and sharing geospatial information..

6 WHO RUNS THE SITE? ESRI created and manages the site as it stands today. ESRI was founded as Environmental Systems Research Institute in 1969 by Jack and Laura Dangermond. The headquartered is in Redlands, California.

12 CROWDSOURCING Crowdsourcing is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community. In ArcGIS Online features from a feature service layer can be edited by anyone who has access to the map. This works well for crowdsourcing maps and applications where users want feedback from many people and want everyone to see all the edits. For example: if we want to collect the graffiti around the USA crowdsourcing is the only solution and ArcGIS Online provides a really nice service for that purpose.

LANDSAT 8 The Landsat program is the longest running enterprise for acquisition of satellite imagery of Earth the Earth Resources Technology Satellite was launched the most recent, Landsat 8, was launched. ArcGIS Online contains Landsat data under the search function. Resolution includes 30m for true color and 15m for black and white Provides some of the most high resolution data and imagery for an extra cost.

24 NATURALVUE SATELLITE IMAGERY - PROVIDES A USEFUL AND ATTRACTIVE MAP This map presents NaturalVue 15m satellite imagery of the world. NaturalVue is a natural color worldwide seamless mosaic from over 8,600 Landsat-7 multispectral images. This single consistent global dataset has a spatial resolution of 0.5 arcseconds (~15 meters) and a positional accuracy of better than 50 meters RMSE. Naturalvue has better resolution than Landsat 8 Views (15m vs 30m)
