INTERNATIONAL China releases Arctic Policy Enlighten about the aspects of China s Arctic Policy China will participate in the development of Arctic shipping routes which are composed of the Northeast Passage, Northwest Passage, and the Central Passage. The Arctic shipping routes likely to become important transport routes for international trade as a result of global warming, China plans to build a Polar Silk Road by developing the Arctic shipping routes China aims to participate in the exploration for and exploitation of oil, gas, mineral and other non-living resources in the Arctic China will start to utilize fisheries and other living resources and participate in conservation, since the Arctic has the potential to become a new fishing ground in the future.
China will develop Arctic tourism, which the paper described as an emerging industry. China will support and encourage its enterprises to cooperate with Arctic States in developing tourism in the region and conduct training for and regulates Chinese tourism agencies and professionals involved in Arctic tourism. China is an important stakeholder in Arctic affairs. Geographically, China is a Near-Arctic State, one of the continental States that are closest to the Arctic Circle. The natural conditions of the Arctic and their changes have a direct impact on China s climate system and ecological environment, and, in turn, on its economic interests in agriculture, forestry, fishery, marine industry and other sectors. Enlighten about Arctic Region - The land territories in the Arctic cover an area of about 8 million square kilometres, whose sovereignty belongs to Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the US. The Arctic Ocean has an area of over 12 million square kilometres, in which coastal and other countries share maritime rights and interests according to international law.
Ministry of Earth Science Mihir (meaning Sun ) Inauguration of High performance computing (HPC) Facility at Noida The High Performance Computer (HPC) System named Mihir (meaning Sun ) inaugurated at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) This will improve India s capacity in weather forecast Enlighten about the HPC facility The HPC facility will be India s largest HPC facility in terms of peak capacity and performance and will propel India s ranking from the 368th position to around the top 30 in the Top 500 list of HPC facilities in the world. India will now also be ranked 4th, after Japan, UK and USA for dedicated HPC resources for weather/climate community. SCIENCE & TECH RemoveDebris RemoveDebris, a mission that will test different methods to clean up space junk is getting ready for launch.
Enlighten About RemoveDebris mission RemoveDEBRIS is aimed at performing key Active Debris Removal (ADR) technology demonstrations (e.g capture, deorbiting) representative of an operational scenario during a low-cost mission using novel key technologies for ADR. The project is co-ordinated by the Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey, UK, and involves the collaboration of a number of mission partners. The mission will comprise of a main satellite platform that once in orbit will deploy two CubeSats as artificial debris targets to demonstrate some of the technologies (net capture, harpoon capture, vision-based navigation, dragsail de-orbitation). GOVERNMENT SCHEMES StreeSwabhiman Implementing Ministry - Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) Why - Its aim is to create sustainable model for providing adolescent girls and women an access to affordable sanitary products by leveraging Common Service Centres (CSCs). Enlighten about StreeSwabhiman Initiative Under this initiative, Common Service Centres (CSC) will provide access to affordable, reliable and modern (eco-friendly) sanitary napkins (menstrual pads) to adolescent girls and women in rural areas.
Its purpose is to improve awareness on menstrual health and hygiene of women, thus help to protect dignity and rights of women. Under this initiative, semi-automatic and manual sanitary napkin manufacturing units will be set up at CSC for producing affordable and eco-friendly sanitary napkins. These micro manufacturing units will be operated by women entrepreneurs and generate employment for 8-10 women. Common Service Centres Enlighten about CSC CSCs are ICT enabled front end service delivery points at the village level for delivery of government and private services. They are a strategic cornerstone of the Digital India programme. They are the access points for delivery of various electronic services to villages in India. Sources pib, the hindu, livemint
