1 University of Nairobi Bachelor of Architectural Studies Bachelor of Architecture Kigara Kamweru Samuel Kerongo Yusuf Ebrahim Studio YR 4 COURSE: BAR 411/412 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/ SEMESTER PROJECT 6: MAMBRUI TOWN (MALINDI): HISTORICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES; AND PREPARATION OF MEASURED DRAWINGS - Period: 2 weeks Introduction: MambruI (3.12 o S o E) is a settlement in Kenya's Coast Province, located east of Marikebuni along the Malindi-Garissa Road, south of Gongoni and north of MalindI. Mambrui is the site of a project by a team of Kenyan and Chinese archaeologists, who are looking for evidence of contact with the Chinese during the era of the Yongle Emperor. In October 2010, the team went public about the discovery of an early 15th-century Chinese coin, the remains of an iron smelter accompanied by iron slag, and a jadegreen shard of porcelain believed to come from Long Quan, a kiln that made porcelain exclusively for the royal family during the early Ming Dynasty. The discoveries may end up confirming that the date of the first international trade with East Africa is decades before the arrival of Vasco Da Gama, most likely during the expeditions of Zheng He. Mambrui Town has much to study on conservation efforts being made by the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders. At the same time there are new recreational facilities coming up which have not critically considered the historical context of the coastal heritage, hence presenting alien architecture. In addition, the newly constructed buildings have not responded appropriately to warm humid coastal climate. This has lead to poorly cross-ventilated and high solar heat gain in the structures. Mambrui Town presents the best opportunity to undertake historical and environmental studies of the Swahili traditional architecture and upcoming modern buildings. The historical studies of Swahili architecture in Mambrui Town will create understanding of the environmental responses undertaken by residents to achieve thermally comfortable building. The Swahili architecture in Mambrui Town will also be keenly be studied to understand how the socio-cultural, economic, historical and climatic conditions have influenced its aesthetics, symbolism and functionality. Further the local craftsmanship and materials will be evaluated. 1

2 Site for historical studies and measured drawings: The sites to carryout survey are shown on the attached map. The detailed survey will consist of the following; a typical dwelling, dwelling cluster, new recreational buildings along coastline, a mosque, Council building, the market square, town square and the typical shopping street. Methodology- Environmental Data Logging, Spatial Measurements, Observations and Interviews: Students will take a familiarization tour of Mambrui Town, formation of study groups, identify and demarcate extent of study area, study spaces and buildings. Each one of the identified buildings or public spaces for field will be measured and detailed in accordance with the attached guidelines to historical work studies and measured drawings sheets. Students will be required to undertake interviews in respective study areas, make free-hand sketches, use tape measures and take photographs. In addition, students will use base maps and check-lists to enter daily data and make descriptive text to explain observations. In the evenings, each group will take stock of daily work undertaken and prepare for the next day by allocating duties to all group members. Data collection will involve the following: a) Environmental: data logging by use of Temp/RH data loggers and sound level meter (Where necessary) and Malindi Airport Met Station data is attached for your use; 2

3 Scope: b) Spatial: preparation of measured drawings of buildings, street geometry and dimensions (height /width), orientation, facade proportions, and fenestration sizes and proportions; c) Architectural: construction materials, surface finishes, sun-shading elements, canopies, landscaping features etc.; and d) Contextual/Functional: Historical/cultural, Geographical/climatic issues, Human activities (both indoor and outdoor during day and night time). The work examines how urban geometry, materials and surface properties of the urban structures affect various environmental parameters both indoor and outdoor namely; air temperature, solar radiation relative humidity, wind and light, during day and night time. The exercise is divided into four headings as outlined below: A. Environmental: - Data collection (Air temperature, Relative humidity, Sound/Noise levels & Light levels (Where necessary); B. Spatial: - Character of building facades: heights, Street geometry & Dimensions [Height/width], Orientation etc.; C. Architectural: - Surface finishes including type, texture and colour, Construction materials, sunshading elements, canopies, landscaping features (both soft and hard, materials used and type of vegetation), window and door sizes and proportions/facade proportions; and D. Contextual/Functional Issues: - Historical and Cultural background, Geographical and Climatic issues, Human activities (both indoor and outdoor) including nature of activities, clothing levels and use of space (indoor and outdoor during day and night time). Presentation Requirements: 1. Measured Drawings of area of study in Mambrui Town; 2. 3D Digital Model of area of study in Mambrui Town; 3. Comparative Analysis of the four headings described above (A to D) for the studied building and urban spaces; and 4. Site Analysis for Project 7: A Tourist Terminal/Information Centre (Mambrui).
