1 KNES Primary School Year 6 Geography Course Outline: This term Year 6 students will be studying everything about Rivers. Geographical skills include using a range of evidence to investigate places and themes; recognize Class Rules: Students, please remember: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get your homework assignment from a classmate and submit it when you return. Homework left at home will be considered as not being done. If you miss a test or deadline on an assignment, you will receive 0% unless you can provide a letter from a medical doctor to show you were not able to attend. It is your responsibility to come to class with the necessary books and other items- they are of no value to you sitting at home. You are to use washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks. You are not to be asking to leave class to use the washroom except in emergencies which should not occur often. When you hear the bell at the start of the day or at breaktime, line up immediately. Be sure to buy food in the cafeteria before the last minutes of your break; you cannot bring the food and/or drink into class.

2 Term 1 Unit Outline Geography Term 1 1 Introduction Map work Locate cities on a map 2 Where does water come from? To test understanding about the water cycle. 3 Where rivers begin To introduce students to the basic terminology relating to rivers and the process of erosion by rivers. 4 Down to the coast To examine the changes in a river valley from near its source to its mouth. 5 Rivers and people To highlight the importance of rivers in the development of towns, cities and industries, and the use of rivers for leisure activities and wildlife habitats. 6 8 The River Nile The River Amazon To develop atlas skills as well as an understanding of the geography of the River Nile To understand the geography of the River Amazon The Murray River To develop knowledge and understanding of the geography of the Murray River. 9 Polluted Rivers To examine the causes, effects and possible solutions to river pollution 10 Mountains, hills and maps To examine how hills, mountains and other areas of high ground are indicated on maps. 11. Examine the three ways in which mountains are formed. 15 Mountains and the weather Summarise the effects of mountains on the weather and to examine the process of weathering on rocks. 16 The Himalayas To introduce the geography of the Himalayas. 17 The Andes To introduce the geography of the Andes. 18 Mountains and tourism To examine the beneficial and adverse effects of tourism in mountain areas. 19 Changing coastlines To explain how the deposition of materials carried by ocean waves can change the shape of the coastline. 20 Sand dunes and people To examine the formation and importance of coastal sand dunes. 21 Buildings on the coast To study the effects of coastal erosion on settlements and the ways in which people can
