Map Skills Scavenger Hunt Introduction to: Continents Cardinal Directions Relative Location Equator and Prime Meridian Hemispheres Reading a Political Map Reading a Physical Map
Idea: This product includes a Pretest to help your kids access what they might already know about maps so that you can build upon that foundation. You might use this as a warm-up activity to be completed individually or with a partner or group. You can follow this up with sharing answers as and a class discussion. Tech Connection: I have included black and white maps with activity for ease of printing but if you would prefer that your students access color maps online, I have included links below. Continents and s Map World Map-Political (Color) Click on the map to zoom in World Map-Physical (Color)
Continents, s, and Countries Pretest Let s see what you know about our world: 1. Name 2 oceans a. b. 2. Name 3 continents a. b. c. 3. What s the smallest continent in the world? 4. What is the largest ocean in the world? 5. What is the largest country in the world? (c) PopTop Projects

Which continent is the largest in the world? 2. This is a compass rose: It helps us tell directions on a map (North, South, West, and East). Use the compass rose to help you answer this question: Is Africa to the north or south of Europe? 3. Which ocean is located to the east of Africa? 4. Which continent is the farthest south? 5. Which ocean is the farthest north? 6. Which ocean lies in between North America and Europe? 7. We use imaginary lines on the Earth to make it easier to find specific locations. The line that runs across the middle of the earth is called the Equator. It splits the Earth into a top half and a bottom half. The Equator passes through parts of which 3 continents? a. b. c. (c) PopTop Projects
Pacific Atlan-c Atlan-c Arc-c Arc-c Indian Pacific (c) PopTop Projects
8. These top and bottom halves of the Earth are called the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Hemi means half. Is Asia in the northern or southern hemisphere? 9. There is also a line that splits the Earth into Western and Eastern Hemispheres. This line is called the Prime Meridian. Is South American in the western or eastern hemisphere? 10. The Prime Meridian runs through which 3 continents: a. b. c. You will need a POLITICAL map of the world to answer the next questions.
