5 Mazovia Region (Wojewódstwo Mazowieckie) Located in the centre/north-eastern part of Poland Largest of 16 autonomous regions (= NUTS II region) 11% of country s total territory (35,500 km2) 13% of the national population (5.1 million inhabitants) Mostly urban residents (64 %) Warsaw agglomeration being the largest urban centre (over 2.8 million). The region accounts for over 19% of the nation s GDP and its GDP per capita makes 33% of EU-15 average (2005?). The region is the most developed in Poland, but at the same time it has the widest disparities between its sub-regions. GDP per capita 2009 in PPS, 97.2% of EU-27 5

6 Roads The central position of the Mazovia Region makes it play an important transit role in the transport system of Poland. Road traffic has increased substantially over the last fifteen years. The total road network of the region consists of some km of paved roads, which account for 11.6% of paved roads in the country. The Voivodship manages km of roads transferred to the region from the national network in

7 Health care In 2007, the Region had 39 healthcare facilities: 25 hospitals, 7 outpatient clinics and 7 institutions operating first-aid stations. Obsolite facilities, poor technical conditions 7

8 Education An increase in the number of academic centres has been observed over the last few years. During the academic year 2005/2006 there were 101 academic centres, including 38 professional academic centres, with about students in the voivodship. During the school year 2005/2006 Mazovia Voivodship had over primary schools and 810 gymnasiums, attended by thousand and thousand students respectively. Fast growth in the number students has not been accompanied by investments in the educational infrastructure. 8

9 Culture Region responsible for 259 cultural centres, culture houses, clubs and community halls. In 2005, they organised over events of that 34 live-stage theatres and musical institutions 103 museums, which accounts for about 15% nationally libraries 9

10 The Project was designed to cover five sectors: Regional roads: construction works related to modernisation, rehabilitation, reconstruction or resurfacing of the roadway; construction or rehabilitation of drainage structures; and reconstruction of bridges; Health care: modernisation or reconstruction of hospitals, rehabilitation centres and specialised facilities, purchase of equipment and upgrade of access roads; Education: modernisation, reconstruction or extension of schools, training centres for teachers, multi-purpose or sports halls, school boarding buildings, etc.; Culture: rehabilitation, modernisation and extension of cultural facilities such as museums, cultural centres, tourism offices and libraries; and Geodesy: Development of information systems for land/property registers, spatial planning, cartography services, satellite positioning systems, etc. 10

14 Pillar 1 - Strategic context in Mazovia The Development Strategy presents a coherent longterm development concept for the Mazovia region for the coming 15 years (2006 up to year 2020) The Spatial Development Plan specifies the spatial dimension of the strategy (basic infrastructure, social infrastructure, requirements and infra for the natural environment. Document aims at reducing intra-regional disparities. Sectoral strategies (e.g. transport, tourism, education, social services, health care, etc.) 14
