1 Mining in Africa African Mining Vision 2050: Transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development Revenues generated by the mining sector should be better managed and more fairly distributed resulting in significant socio-economic upliftment; Mineral wealth be used to promote resource-based industrialisation and diversification; and The exploitation of mineral resources as a lever of growth and the eradication of poverty, for the well being of Africa s populations.

5 West Africa Minerals Sector Significant economic endowment with worlds class bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamond deposits Projects under development at either the project-by-project or national level

6 Infrastructure linked deposits Mineral opportunities that create long-term opportunities for infrastructure development focus on those deposits that have the geological potential to host large long-life deposits of those solid minerals capable of supporting high-tonnage long-life mining/mineral-processing projects. Low-value high-bulk minerals are most conducive to providing critical mass to the development of a cluster or corridor.

7 Baseline and stakeholder consultation Review of current state of mining and the environment Institutional Stakeholder Focus Groups; and Community Stakeholder Surveys (targeting 10 communities in the three MRU countries (three each in Liberia and Sierra Leone and four in Guinea), selected for representativeness of the breadth, depth and diversity of communities impacted by mines and/or infrastructure development.

National workshops: to be held in Conakry, Freetown and Monrovia to validate WAMSSA s findings to date, select key priorities, and identify policy and institutional adjustments needed to address priorities In-depth economic analysis alternative implementation paths Mine planning Infrastructure planning Economic, environmental and social opportunities and costs Guidance as to the best way forward in the establishment of subregional mining clusters.
