1 Ruawai College Social Sciences Department Level 1 Geography PROGRAMME OVERVIEW 2014 Topic/Theme EXTREME NATURAL EVENTS: TSUNAMIS Case Study: 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami/Boxin g Day Tsunami, Indian Ocean characteristics and how environments are shaped by processes that create spatial natural and cultural environments and that this interaction has consequences. Understand that the various natural and cultural characteristics of an environment can make them more vulnerable to extreme natural events such as Tsunamis Understand how the various processes operate to produce the extreme natural event Understand that the extreme natural event can produce a range of immediate and long term effects on natural environments Understand that the extreme natural event can produce a range of immediate and long term effects on cultural environments Understand the various ways different groups of people have responded to the effects of the extreme natural event Examine New Zealand s tsunami history identify the evidence we have of past events, identify and explain why certain coastal areas are more vulnerable than others. Describe New Zealand s Tsunami warning systems and procedures. 2 Topic/Theme - GLOBAL POPULATION CONCEPTS [POPULATION GEORGAPHY] New Zealand, Australia, India, China - diversity - relating to others Examine a range of characteristics of the global population and predicted trends for the future Understand the concept of population distribution: how and why population is spread across the landscape, using a number of country case studies Understand the concept of population diversity: composition of the population including ethnicity, age and sex, using a number of country case studies Understand the concept of migration and the nature of mobility of a population, including both external and internal migration trends, using a number of country case studies Understand that populations change over time by examining changing population totals, age-sex structure and natural increase Understand the concept of population sustainability: capacity of the environment to support a population in the longer term - Change AS91008 v1 : Demonstrate geographic understanding of population concepts Demonstrate comprehensive geographic understanding involves: fully explaining population concepts using geographic terminology and concepts and showing insight, integrating detailed supporting evidence [showing insight refers to showing perception, and linking causes with effects] GEOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS, IDEAS AND SKILLS Case Study: NZ, Australia, Barrier Reef, Students will demonstrate the development of a geographic vocabulary (i.e. relief, contours, grid references) the ability to apply graphing and mapping skills accurately the ability to understand and appropriately apply basic graphing and mapping conventions (using a key, clear shading, labels) a high degree of accuracy with précis mapping and sketching the ability to choose and use correct drawing and graphic equipment (sharp pencil, coloured pencils, ruler) in order to
