1 PROCESS ECONOMICS PROGRAM SRI INTERNATIONAL Menlo Park, California Abstract Process Economics POLVINYL Program Report No. 13E CHLORIDE (October 1991) This supplementary report reviews recent technical developments in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins by the suspension, bulk, emulsion, microsuspension, and solution processes; the prevention of polymer encrustation on the surfaces inside the reactor: and the removal of the residual monomers from the reaction products. The report also evaluates the process economics of various grades of PVC resin by the suspension, bulk, emulsion, and microsuspension processes. We consider production by the suspension process of the following grades: general purpose, high bulk density, skinless, low molecular weight, ultra-high molecular weight, high volume resistivity, and radiation resistant. We evaluate new liquid phase bulk process technology which employs a spherical polymerizer in place of the vertical polymerizer. In the production of dispersion resins, we include the batch, continuous, and seeded batch emulsion processes, as well as the batch and seeded batch microsuspension processes. PEP 89 SHW
