3 Peripheral Instructions The BD ProbeTec ET System is designed to perform a wide variety of assays for detection of targeted organisms. Different assays sometimes require the use of different peripheral equipment. The BD ProbeTec ET System User s Manual contains two types of information: 1) information on the BD ProbeTec ET instrument itself; and 2) information on equipment used in the Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) assays, such as the Lysing eater, Lysing Rack and Cover, etc. This second type of information is NOT applicable to the mycobacteria assays. The operation instructions for the BD ProbeTec ET INSTRUMENT contained in the System User s Manual are applicable to ALL assays. This includes information about logging in samples, initiating testing, responding to errors, icon reference charts, etc. Peripheral equipment for the mycobacteria assays contain individual operation instructions that are included with the items. You should refer to those separate instructions for important safety, operating, troubleshooting, and maintenance information. These include instructions for the following items: BD ProbeTec ET Oven BD ProbeTec ET Sonic Bath (Additional operating instructions appear on the next page) Eppendorf Centrifuge In addition, the reagent package inserts for the mycobacteria assays provide additional information that is specific to the assay. You should refer to those package inserts for specific assay/equipment information. We recommend that you retain these instructions and insert them in your System User s Manual. The end of Section 4 Operation is recommended since that section contains other system operating instructions. Note that for CT/GC assays, Amplification Control can be enabled/disabled and represents an additional well within the set of assay microwells. For the mycobacteria assays, Amplification Control is internal, and cannot be enabled/disabled. L (B) 3

4 Additional Instructions on the Operation of the BD ProbeTec ET Sonic Bath Please note the following warnings, cautions, and instructions related to operation of the BD ProbeTec ET Sonic Bath: Do not use a mercury thermometer to check the temperature in the Sonic Bath. A digital thermometer is provided for this purpose. Do not place fingers or hands into the Sonic Bath when the ultrasonics are turned ON. To do so may cause discomfort and possible skin irritation. Long term damage to soft tissue can also occur. Fill the bath with hot tap water. Do not use distilled or deionized water. The water level must fall between the Minimum and Maximum indicator lines of the Sonic Bath Insert. If the room temperature in which the bath is placed is below 18 C, or the operating line voltage is low, the bath may experience delays in achieving the desired water temperature in a timely manner. Always operate the bath with the lid in place. In order to ensure accurate measurement of the water temperature, remove the sleeve from the digital thermometer (which is provided with the system) and stir the water gently for approximately 10 seconds with the thermometer. Temperature readings must be taken immediately prior to sonicating samples. 4 L (B)
