2 A Cells Levelness list the seven things that all living things do I know that living things are made up of cells and that these come together to form organs which name and locate I know that cells have a basic structure but they look different depending on the role they have. describe the differences between plant and animal cells explain the role of different parts of both plants and animals cells and relate the structure of the organelle to its role. 200 Anthony J Cole

3 B Reproduction Levelness say why reproduction is needed in plants and animals find and name the reproductive organs in the human body describe fertilisation and how babies develop in the uterus I know the role of the placenta in the development of the foetus explain how egg and sperm cells carry genetic material and this material determines the characteristics of new life 200 Anthony J Cole

4 C Environment and Feeding Levelness Relationships list a number of different habitats and the animals and plants which live there draw examples of food chains and can name the producers and consumers. describe ways in which organisms are adapted to specific environmental characteristics. explain how the distribution and abundance of organisms in habitats are affected by environmental conditions construct a pyramid of numbers to show feeding relationships and explain how these relationships interact. 200 Anthony J Cole

6 E Acids and Alkalis Levelness I know some examples of common acids and alkalis use an indicator to identify substances as either acids or alkalis use the ph scale to classify substances to know when neutralisation has taken place describe the neutralisation reaction and know that the products are salt and water. predict the products of a neutralisation reaction given the name of the acid and the alkali 200 Anthony J Cole

7 F Simple Chemical Reactions Levelness I know that oxygen is needed for substances to burn state whether a reaction is reversible or irreversible predict the products of simple reactions by using the tests for CO 2, H 2, O 2 and H 2 O. predict the products of simple chemical reaction given the word equations for the reactants use word equations to represent chemical reactions and use these to predict the products 200 Anthony J Cole

8 G Particle Model of Solids, Levelness Liquids and Gases sort substances into solids, liquids and gases. use scientific words to describe the changes between solids, liquids and gases. I am able to able to recognise the changes in different substances and name them correctly. recognise the particulate nature of matter in relation to solids, liquids and gases and can draw diagrams to illustrate this. use the particle model to explain properties of materials, changes of state, chemical changes and elements, compounds and mixtures. 200 Anthony J Cole

12 K Forces and their Effects Levelness use words that identify forces. I know that force causes movement. I know that forces affect the direction of movement. identify the direction in which a force acts and know when a force is balanced by another. I understand that friction opposes force and that forces determine the rate of change of movement. explain the relationship between weight and gravity and can relate the motions of bodies in the solar system to gravitational attraction. 200 Anthony J Cole

I know that our body s digestive system breaks down food to release energy. describe how food is digested it is broken down into smaller molecules so it can be used by the body. describe how large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules by enzymes. explain why carbohydrate molecules are broken down to glucose molecules and can relate this to respiration. 200 Anthony J Cole

15 8B Respiration Levelness I know that breathing is essential to keep animals alive. I know that oxygen is required for aerobic respiration and that oxygen and glucose are transported in the blood. describe the role of blood in transporting carbon dioxide from and oxygen to the lungs. compare aerobic and burning fuels. describe how the breathing system is adapted to its function. 200 Anthony J Cole

16 8C Microbes and diseases Levelness name some infectious diseases. I know that microorganisms include bacteria, fungi and viruses. I understand how they are transmitted. describe how microorganisms transmit disease and understand some of the defences the body has against disease. explain how the production of anti-bodies and specialised cells in the blood act as part of the defence system. explain how immunisation helps us to defend against disease. discuss the problems associated with the use of antibodies. 200 Anthony J Cole

18 8E Atoms and Elements Levelness name some elements and represent these by symbols I know that materials can look different but contain the same element. I know elements contain one type of particle called atoms; relate positions of metals and non-metals in periodic table. 19 8F Compound and Mixtures Levelness I have a basic knowledge that e.g. ice melts & we can get water and make ice again. describe how some mixtures could be separated. identify melting and boiling points as the fixed temperatures at which elements and compounds change state. use the particle model to explain changes of state. represent some compounds by formulae and explain what these show about the numbers and types of atom present. 200 Anthony J Cole

20 8G Rocks and Weathering Levelness I know that sometimes rocks are worn away by the wind and rain. identify a statue, made of sedimentary rock, which has been eroded by acid rain describe the effects of chemical weathering on a statue made of sedimentary rock. relate the size of grain in sedimentary rock, and the strength of the acid to how quickly the rock erodes in acid rain. use the particle model to relate the rate of erosion to the strength of acid and size of grain in a sedimentary rock 200 Anthony J Cole

21 8H The Rock Cycle Levelness describe the basic properties of rocks from observations name the three types of rock and name an example for each of them describe parts of rock cycle in terms of time scale explain the rock cycle in detail explain how the physical and chemical processes are involved in the rock cycle 200 Anthony J Cole

22 8I Heating and Cooling Levelness give examples of common temperatures on the Celsius scale. E.g. the freezing and boiling point of water. tell the difference between heat and temperature describe some uses of conductors and insulators and give examples of conduction in solids and convection in liquids and gases. explain expansion, conduction and convection and change of state in terms of particles. use the particle model to explain change of state, relating this to forces between particles. 200 Anthony J Cole

24 8K Light Levelness I know that shaped glass can make rainbows from white light. I know that light travels in straight lines unless something is in the way. explain how we see objects. I know that light bends as it passes from one material to another. use the speed equation to calculate how long it takes light to travel certain distances. 200 Anthony J Cole

25 8L Sound and Hearing Levelness I know that sound is caused by vibrations and will not travel through a vacuum. I understand how sound vibrations are detected by the ear. I recognise that sound travels at different speeds through different materials. understand that vibrations vary in frequency and speed and can relate these to oscilloscope patterns, pitch and volume. use particle theory to explain how sound travels through materials. use a model of the ear to describe how hearing can be impaired. 200 Anthony J Cole

26 9A Inheritance and Selection Levelness I am able to identify some inherited characteristics describe how some characteristics are influenced by environmental conditions I know that sexual reproduction is the joining of two cells and this result in a genetically different offspring. I know that sexual reproduction can result in good and bad characteristics being passes on by the parent s genes. describe how selective breeding can result in offspring with particular characteristics and discuss why this might be desirable. 200 Anthony J Cole

27 9B Fit and Healthy Levelness identify the effects of diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol and other drugs on the body. describe how the body uses energy in food. describe some effects of diet, drugs and exercise on some organ systems explain how different body systems work together in a healthy individual. describe how cells in the respiratory system are adapted for their purpose and how they can be damaged by smoking. represent respiration in a symbol equation and can relate this to the need for more energy during exercise. 200 Anthony J Cole

28 9C Plants and Photosynthesis Levelness recall that plants take in water through their roots and that photosynthesis takes place in the leaves identify that carbon dioxide and water are the raw materials for photosynthesis. represent photosynthesis as a word equation and know that light is needed as an energy source for this process to take place describe how cells in the leaf and root are adapted for photosynthesis and taking in water discuss the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration in plants and represent both these processes using symbol equations 200 Anthony J Cole

29 9D Plants for Food Levelness name some of the minerals provided by fertilisers identify factors which affect the growth of crops and identify some organisms which compete for resources where crops grow. describe how the abundance and distribution of organisms may be affected by pesticides or weedkiller and can relate this to food webs. explain how toxic materials can accumulate in the a food chain relate crop production to pyramid of numbers and discuss some ways of achieving a balance between the demands of different communities in an environment 200 Anthony J Cole

30 9E Reactions of metals Levelness and metal compounds describe tests for the gases carbon dioxide and hydrogen. I know that when acids react with metals they produce hydrogen and with carbonates acids produce carbon dioxide. I recognise when a chemical reaction has taken place because chemical changes have occurred. identify patterns in chemical reactions; naming the salts produced and naming some of their uses. I can write word equations for these reactions. predict the products of a neutralisation reaction and write a word equation to show this quoting the appropriate salt formed. 200 Anthony J Cole

31 9F Patterns of Reactivity Levelness I know some of the properties of metals and their uses. describe how some metals react with water, acids and oxygen give some uses of metals, relating these to reactivity. recognise a displacement reaction and relate this to the reactivity series of metals. write word equations to illustrate these. use the reactivity series to make predictions about the reactions of metals, how it occurs naturally and how it is extracted. 200 Anthony J Cole

32 9G Environmental Chemistry Levelness name some forms of pollution. describe the effect of acid rain in sedimentary rocks describe how air and water pollution are monitored and how they might be controlled. distinguish between different environmental problems eg. Ozone depletion and the Greenhouse Effect. discuss a variety of environmental issues including acid rain, ozone depletion and the Greenhouse Effect and know the implications of these. 200 Anthony J Cole

33 9H Using Chemistry Levelness I know that when a substance burns new materials are formed. name the products that form when a material burns and know that energy is released. represent the products of burning as oxides. relate observations in which mass appears to be lost with the principle of conservation of mass and explain it using symbol equations use the particle model to explain how mass is conserved during chemical reactions. 200 Anthony J Cole

34 9I Energy and Electricity Levelness I know that if a bulb doesn t work there must be a break in the electrical circuit. I recognise that electricity is an easy way to deliver energy, but it must be paid for. describe how electricity is generated by energy from fuels and how voltage originates from a chemical cell recognise that although the total energy in a system is conserved, energy can be dissipated into a less useful form. apply a model of voltage and energy changes to a circuit 200 Anthony J Cole

35 9J Gravity and Space Levelness give examples of the uses of artificial satellites. I recognise that my weight is different on the moon but my mass stays the same. I recognise gravity as a force of attraction between objects and that it depends on their masses and distance apart describe how the forces on rockets vary as they travel away from the Earth. use data to compare and discuss the effects of gravity on different planets. 200 Anthony J Cole
