16 Categories Identified for Physical Hazards 1. Explosives 2. Flammable Gases 3. Flammable Aerosols 4. Oxidizing Gases 5. Gases Under Pressure 6. Flammable Liquids 7. Flammable Solids 8. Self-Reactive Substances 9. Pyrophoric Liquids 10. Pyrophoric Solids 11. Self-Heating Substances 12. Substances which, in contact with water emit flammable gases 13. Oxidizing Liquids 14. Oxidizing Solids 15. Organic Peroxides 16. Corrosive to Metals 5

Hazard Class Category (1) EXPLOSIVES Pictogram: Exploding Bomb Hazard Class Physical Hazard Explosives are classified in six divisions and determined by test criteria Hazard statements corresponding to the hazard class severity Remember Lower the number Higher the risk Hazard Class: Danger, Warning or None 6 "Danger" for the more severe hazards "Warning" for the less severe hazards.

GHS Statements Legend what the letters and numbers represent 7

The Letter H is for the hazard statement The number following H designates the type of hazard. 2 for physical hazard 3 for health hazard 4 for environmental hazard The Letter P is for the Precautionary statement The number following P designates the type of precautionary statement. 1 for general (not in legend) 2 for prevention 3 for response 4 for storage 5 for disposal 8

Division Characteristics 1.1 Mass explosion hazard 1.2 Projection hazard 1.3 Fire hazard or minor projection hazard 1.4 No significant hazard 1.5 Very insensitive substances with mass explosion hazard 1.6 Extremely insensitive articles with no mass explosion hazard Substances, mixtures and articles are assigned to one of six divisions, 1.1 to 1.6, depending on the type of hazard they present. Currently, only the transport sector uses six categories for explosives 9

10 Categories Identified for Health Hazards 1. Acute Toxicity 2. Skin Corrosion/Irritation 3. Serious Eye Damage/Eye Irritation 4. Respiratory or Skin Sensitization 5. Germ Cell Mutagenicity 6. Carcinogenicity 7. Reproductive Toxicology 8. Target Organ Systemic Toxicity - Single Exposure 9. Target Organ Systemic Toxicity - Repeated Exposure 10. Aspiration Toxicity 10

Pictogram: Skull & Crossbones Hazard Class Category One general Health Hazard Category (Acute Toxicity) Pictogram: Exclamation Mark Hazard Class Health Category number correlates to testing results as identified in the GHS Purple Book Chapter 3.1. (As shown on next slide) 11

OSHA has not adopted the Environmental Hazard. This section is for illustration for what workers may find in a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) 3 classes of environmental hazards 1) Acute aquatic toxicity 2) Chronic aquatic toxicity 3) Dangerous to the ozone layer 13

Labels and Safety Data Sheets are the main tools for chemical hazard communication Example of GHS Secondary Hazard Label 14

GHS Secondary Label Example of completed Secondary Hazard Label Skin, Eyes, Respiratory Irritant OSHA requirements are intentionally vague Basic content Hanford workplace labeling Product & manufacturer Hanford unique SDS number Color coding Signal words and pictograms Hazard statements No precautionary statements No NFPA 704 ratings 15
