5 OXIDATION NUMBER RULES The oxidation number of a free element is always 0. The oxidation number of a monatomic ion equals the charge of the ion. The oxidation number of fluorine in compounds is -1. The oxidation number of hydrogen in compounds is +1. Exception: the oxidation number of hydrogen is -1 in metal hydrides, like CaH 2. The oxidation number of oxygen in compounds is -2. Exception: the oxidation number of oxygen is -1 in peroxides, like BaO 2. The oxidation number of Cl, Br, I in compounds is -1. Exception: when combined with O or F, the preceding rules apply. The oxidation numbers of all other elements in a compound adjust such that: The sum of the oxidation numbers of all of the atoms in a neutral compound is 0. The sum of the oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion is equal to the charge of the ion. 3
