1 CURRICULUM VITAE Haifeng Lv, Candidate for PhD Gender: male Birth: Jun.25, 1984 Citizenship: People s Republic of China Place of Birth: Qiqihar city, Heilongjiang province Major: Materials Physics and Chemistry lvhaifeng11@gmail.com Telephone: Address: 324 brooks street, Box H, Department of Chemistry,Brown University Providence, RI State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan , China Educational background present Visiting Student of Brown University, Chemistry Department Candidate for PhD State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) Master State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) Bachelor School of Materials Science and Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT). Research experience 1. Synthesis and characterizations of Pd Modified Pt/C Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell. Pd has been used to promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the
2 cathodic catalyst in fuel cells by decorating the surface of Pt supported on carbon black with Pd. Both the Pt-Pd/C catalyst with different ratios of Pt to Pd and the Pt/C catalyst of reference were fabricated by polyol processes in ethylene glycol solution. The Pd-modified Pt/C catalysts present a high ORR activity in RDE measurements and a better single cell performance in MEA test than the traditional Pt/C catalysts. 2. Researches focus on developing highly stable catalyst for PEM fuel cells (a) Heat-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes as durable supports for PEM fuel cell catalysts Recently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed as alternative support material to replace traditional carbon black for fuel cell catalysts due to their excellent stabilitys compared to carbon black. However, the long term performance of CNTs under chemically and electrochemically oxidizing conditions needs further improvement. In this work, heat treatment is carried out for MWCNTs in ammonia atmosphere (NH 3 ). The effect of heating to 1000 C on the structures and on the resistance to electrochemical oxidation of the heat-treated CNTs (H-CNTs) is investigated. In addition, after ammonia heat treatment, a more homogeneous dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on the H-CNTs support is obtained by increasing the porosity. Therefore, enhancement of the stability and performance of the Pt/CNTs catalyst is obtained after heat treatment. (b) Nano silicon carbide supported catalysts for PEM fuel cells with high electrochemical stability and improved performance by addition of carbon We report the synthesis of a Pt/SiC as PEM fuel cell electrocatalysts with homogeneously dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on nano SiC particles, furthermore, carbon was introduced into this Pt/SiC catalyst, (Pt/SiC/C), to improve its electrocatalytic performance by increasing the electrical conductivity. We demonstrate the novel carbon-mixed Pt/SiC electrocatalyst s excellent performance and electrochemical stability. (c) High Stability Platinum Electrocatalysts with Zirconia-Carbon Hybrid Supports We report a novel strategy for stabilizing Pt NPs on the zirconia-carbon hybrid
3 support (ZrO 2 -C). The hybrid support, not only has the excellent stability of ceramic supports, but also has the superior electrical conductivity of carbon supports at an acceptable cost, which could be effective for inhibiting the migration and aggregation of Pt NPs on the support and increasing the resistance of carbon black to the chemical and electrochemical corrosion. The Pt/ZrO 2 -C composite has a significantly enhanced stability over the conventional Pt/C catalyst. This work represents a novel and significant strategy to functional nanocatalysts with remarkably high stability that shows great potential applications in fuel cells and other industrial fields. Some other nano-materials also have been used as supports of catalysts for PEM fuel cells in our experiments, such as Bp2000, TiO, TiN, ZrC, B 4 C, TiC, TiB 2 and Graphene. 3. Boron carbide nanoparticles supported Pt catalysts with enhanced methanol activity and CO tolerance Nano-B 4 C as support of Pt catalyst for methanol electrooxidation is investigated and evaluated in this work, experimental results demonstrated that the ORR activity, CO tolerance and methanol oxidation could be improved than Pt/C catalysts. 4. An ambient aqueous synthesis for highly dispersed and active Pd/C catalyst for formic acid electro-oxidation We report an experimentally simple process to prepare highly dispersed Pd/C catalyst without the use of any stabilizing agent. The [Pd(NH 3 ) 4 ] 2+ ion is synthesized with gentle heating in aqueous ammonia solution without formation of Pd(OH) x complex intermediates. The adsorbed [Pd(NH 3 ) 4 ] 2+ on the surface of carbon is reduced in situ to Pd nanoparticles by NaBH 4 and H 2.The Pd/C catalyst using H2 as reduciton has better formic acid oxidation than the Pd/C catalyst reduced by NaBH 4 because the average size of Pd/C catalyst reduced by H 2 are smaller than Pd/C catalyst reduced by NaBH 4. The average size of Pd/C catalyst reduced by H 2 is 1.3nm at 200 o C and 2.2nm at 600 o C. The average size of Pd/C catalyst reduced by NaBH 4 is 4.7nm.
