3 Capture capacity for amine-co 2 system The net capacity is defined as the difference between equilibrium concentrations at the absorption and stripping partial pressures. With CO 2 partial pressure change of 5 bar to 1 bar: i. At 70 o C, 4.5 M MDEA solution has a net CO 2 pickup of 30 vol/vol (0.297 mole/mole). ii. At 60 o C, 4.1 M MEA solution has a net CO 2 pickup of 5 vol/vol. 5 1. Amine-CO 2 VLE solubility experiments Information on the solubility of CO 2 in a amine solution is required for solvent evaluation. 10 Carbamate formation is a Lewis acid-base and a nucleophilic addition reaction Increased electron density on the Lewis base (nucleophile) raises the energy of the electron pair and makes it more available to react; The reactivity of a Lewis base (nucleophile) depends not only on the chemical-structural properties of the molecules, but also on other factors such as solvation etc. 1) Solvent interactions 2) Hydroxyl group interactions RNH 2 + H 2 O RNH 3+ + OH -

12 4. Molecular structure-activity relationship + δ The electron density on N atom of the reacted amine influences the reaction with CO 2 and the stability of carbamate. R. W. Taft (1952) introduced an empirical parameter which describes the polar effect (σ*) of substituents. t Polar effect : atoms or groups of atoms attached to the functional group have the ability to withdraw or donate electrons through the bonds. 15 Conclusions and Outlook Concentration based VLE modelling was successfully demonstrated. Liquid speciation method developed. 15N NMR method development Deeper understanding of equilibrium reactions Correlations between equilibrium constants (K and K ) Correlations between equilibrium constants (K CBM and K HYD ) and Taft polar substituent constants ( σ* ) were established.
