1 It is most beneficial to you to write this mock midterm UNDER EXAM CONDITIONS. This means: Complete the midterm in 1.5 hour(s). Work on your own. Keep your notes and textbook closed. Attempt every question. After the time limit, go back over your work with a different colour or on a separate piece of paper and try to do the questions you are unsure of. Record your ideas in the margins to remind yourself of what you were thinking when you take it up at PASS. The purpose of this mock exam is to give you practice answering questions in a timed setting and to help you to gauge which aspects of the course content you know well and which are in need of further development and review. Use this mock exam as a learning tool in preparing for the actual exam. Please note: Come to the PASS workshop with your mock exam complete. During the workshop you can work with other students to review your work. Often, there is not enough time to review the entire exam in the PASS workshop. Decide which questions you most want to review the Facilitator may ask students to vote on which questions they want to discuss in detail. Facilitators do not bring copies of the mock exam to the session. Please print out and complete the exam before you attend. Facilitators do not produce or distribute an answer key for mock exams. Starting with NO(g), write the reactions involved in producing tropospheric ozone (smog). A5. How does increasing each of the following variables affect mean free path? (a) Pressure (b) Temperature (c) Number of molecules A6. How does the average molecular kinetic energy of 1.5 mols of CO2(g) in a 5.00 L container at 50 compare with that of 3.0 mols of O3(g) in a 5.00 L container at 50?
4 Part B. Answer any three of the following four questions (B1, B2, B3, B4). If you answer all four, the best three answers will count. (20 marks each) Note: For the purposes of this mock exam, answer all four questions. B1. A L cylinder contains 57.0 mols of CO2(g) when full. After using it for a week s worth of CHEM 1001 labs, 0.57 mols of CO2(g) remain in the cylinder. The temperature remains constant at 25. For CO2(g), a = kpa L 2 mol -2 and b = L mol -1 (a) Calculate the pressure (kpa) of CO2(g) in the full cylinder using the ideal gas law and the van der Waal s equation. (b) Calculate the pressure (kpa) of CO2(g) in the cylinder at the end of the week using the ideal gas law and van der Waal s equation. (c) Why is the difference in part (a) s values more drastic than the difference in part (b) s? (d) Calculate the average kinetic energy (in J) per molecule of CO2(g) in the cylinder.
