These chemical gases react with the water, oxygen, and other substances in the air to form mild solutions of sulfuric and nitric acids. 4 Name: Date Pd: Identifying Acids & Bases and ph Using Litmus Paper and Universal ph indicator Solution! Directions: You are a chemist working for Williamsburg Science Labs. Your job is to test different classroom and household substances to determine if they are acids and bases. You also want to tell how strong of an acid or base the substance is, to make sure that proper safety warnings and procedures are followed when the substance is in use. You will work in pairs for this lab. PART 1: DETERMINING IF IT S AN ACID, BASE (ALKALINE), OR NEUTRAL USING LITMUS PAPER ***ACIDS*** No effect on red litmus paper; Turns blue litmus paper. (**if it is strong, however it may corrode/ bleach the paper after a few minutes if left to sit) NEUTRAL If neither the red or blue litmus paper change color, the substance is probably. (or very close to it) ***BASES*** Turn red litmus paper ; No effect on blue litmus paper. (**if it s strong, however it may corrode/ bleach the paper after a few minutes if left to sit) Materials: Red & Blue Litmus paper, tweezers, droppers, paper-towels, plastic sheet, various substances to test REMINDERS: WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES DO NOT CONTAMINATE DROPPERS! PART 1 PROCEDURES-LITMUS PAPER: 1) Using tweezers, place one small piece each of red Litmus paper, and blue Litmus paper on a plastic sheet a few centimeters apart. Organize your litmus paper on your plastic sheet as shown to the right (you can place more than 5 if they will fit) 2) Obtain your first substance and use the dropper/pipette to place ONE drop of the substance on your first red and blue litmus papers. DO NOT CONTAMINATE!!!!! Note on your data sheet if the substance caused either of the litmus papers to change color. 3) Test for the substance s actual ph using the directions in the next section. Fill this in on the data collection sheet as well. 4) Put back substance and get your next substance. **You may take up to 2 substances back to your table at a time to save you some trips. 5) Repeat above steps until you have tested all the substances you have time for.

5 PART 2: DETERMINING ACTUAL ph USING UNIVERSAL INDICATOR SOLUTION ***ACIDS*** On a ph scale, Acids have a ph of LESS than to The strongest Acids have a ph closer to The weaker Acids have a ph closer to NEUTRAL On the ph scale, substances have a ph of exactly. ***BASES*** On ph scale, Bases have a ph of MORE than to The strongest Bases have a ph closer to The weaker Bases have a ph closer to GLUE IN YOUR universal ph indicator solution KEY in the space below: Materials: Well plate, Universal ph indicator solution, droppers, various substances to test REMINDERS: WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES DO NOT CONTAMINATE DROPPERS! PART 2 PROCEDURES- Finding the substance s actual ph 1) Using a dropper, place 3-4 drops of the neutral ph indicator solution (should appear green) into each well in the plate as shown to the right 2) Obtain your first substance and use the dropper to place 1-2 drops of the substance into the first well. DO NOT CONTAMINATE!!!!! 3) Observe for a few seconds if the substance has a color change. Compare the color to your universal ph indicator KEY. Figure out which color it matches best and determine the substance s ph. Record this information in your data table. 4) Put back substance and get your next substance.**you may take up to 2 substances back to your table at a time to save you some trips. 5) Repeat above steps until you have tested all the substances you have time for. CLEAN UP AND DO NOT LEAVE TRASH/SUPPLIES OUT! CLEAN UP: Wipe off the small plastic sheet using paper towel-throw paper towel away, being careful not to actually touch the substance with your hands. Rinse hands briefly in sink if you do touch a strong chemical. Wipe off plastic sheet, put back. CLEAN UP ALL TRASH!!!! Dump out well-plate in sink. Leave in bucket in sink to rinse off or wipe off with a wet paper-towel.
