The impact of physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of drugs on the safety, effectiveness, stability and formulation of various pharmaceutical dosage forms is discussed thoroughly during the course. This will be achieved via understanding the following topics: states of matter, the subphases that solids can exist, properties of drugs in solution and colligative properties, equilibrium phenomena, solubility, chemical kinetics, drug stability and interfacial phenomena. Course Objectives: This course intends to make the students understand: 1. The physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of the drug substances as well as drug products. 2. The impact of such properties on the formulation, processing and performance of final dosage forms in terms of bioavailability, safety and stability. Intended Learning Outcomes: Following the successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: A. Knowledge and understanding: Student is expected to A1. Recognize the various subphases that solids can exist in such as, polymorphs, solvates, hydrates, amorphous etc. A2. Understand the physical properties of the solid state of drugs and their relevance to the production and performance of finished pharmaceutical products. A3. Know the various factors (ph, Temperature, salt) that affect the solubility of a drug in pharmaceutical solutions. 1

2 A4. Understand the fundamentals of chemical reaction kinetics of simple and complex reactions. B. Subject specific skills: Student is expected to B1. Establish methodologies for differentiating the various orders of Chemical Reactions as well as how to compute various kinetics parameters associated with each order. B2. Develop a theoretical and mathematical foundation for surface tension and its rule in wetting as well as adsorption at liquid or solid interfaces B3. Apply the knowledge, which the student had learnt, to be able to prepare different buffers C. Cognetive and Intellectual skills: Student is expected to C1. Build up knowledge and scientific skills regarding factors that affect reaction rate and drug stability and the overall stability of pharmaceuticals C2. Understand the rule of partition coefficient during preformulation studies in the development of pharmaceutical dosage forms D. Transferable Skills: Student is expected to be able to D1. Recognize the concept of colligative properties and their pharmaceutical applications such as the preparation of isotonic solutions D2.
