4 Ph.D Thesis: Study of Molecular Interactions In Some Binary and Ternary Liquid systems Through Ultrasonic Velocity Measurements. A thorough knowledge of thermodynamic and transport properties of multi-component systems is essential in many industrial applications such as design calculation, absorption heat pumps, heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid flow. Besides, the derived properties, in combination with other mixing properties, provide valuable information as much for qualitatively analyzing the molecular interactions and for understanding structural effects which occur in the chosen mixtures. In the present investigation, the viscosities, densities and ultrasonic velocities of six binary liquid mixtures viz., Ethyl benzoate+ NNDimethyl frormamade, Ethyl benzoate+ NNDimethylacetamide and Ethyl benzoate + NNDimethyl aniline, Ethyl benzoate+benzene, Ethyl benzoate + Chlorobenzene, Ethyl benzoate+nitrobenzene were utilized to estimate the molar volume, intermolecular freelength, adiabatic compressibility, acoustic impedance, free volume, internal pressure, Gibb s free energy of activation of flow at four different temperatures. Ultrasonic velocity was measured using the ultrasonic interferometer (Model M-83,frequency: 2MHz) provided by Mittal Enterprises, New Delhi.The sign and magnitude of the non-linear deviations from ideality as a function of composition and temperature may be ascribed to the presence of weak or strong type of interactions between unlike molecules. The excess molar volume values become more negative at higher temperature, suggesting an increase in interaction between component molecules.the adiabatic compressibility (β ad ) and intermolecular free length (L f ) both have an inverse relationship with ultrasonic velocity (U). Occurrence of U maxima, β ad and L f minima at the same concentrations indicate the strong interaction through dipole-dipole interactions between the components. The excess free volumev E f values of all the three systems under study are negative while excess internal pressureπ E values are positive. These indicate the presence of specific interactions between the components. Max positive values of π E are observed in the binary system Ethyl benzoate + NNDMAc system.
5 The four ternary mixtures studied in the present investigation are Ethylbenzoate(A)+benzene(B)+[N-N-dimethylformamide(C),+N-N-dimethylacetamide(C)] Methylbenzoate(A)+benzene(B)+[N-N-dimethylformamide(C),+N-N-dimethylacetamide(C)] The strong dipolar association of AC interaction is disrupted by the addition of benzene (B). This leads to a very weak AB & BC interaction of dipole induced dipole type which leads to reduction in total interaction of the system.the increase in free volume is due to weakening of interaction and also due to the replacement of component C by bulky component B molecules.the very low values of V E f may be due to combined effect of disruption of dipolar association of AC and π-electron repulsion between AB.
