A graph is k-planar (k 1) if it can b drawn in th plan such that no dg is crossd mor than k tims. A graph is k-quasi planar (k 2) if it can b drawn in th plan with no k pairwis crossing dgs. Th familis of k-planar and k-quasi planar graphs hav bn widly studid in th litratur, and svral bounds hav bn provn on thir dg dnsity. Nonthlss, only trivial rsults ar known about th rlationship btwn ths two graph familis. In this papr w prov that, for k 3, vry k-planar graph is (k + 1)-quasi planar. 1 Introduction Drawings of graphs ar usd in a varity of application domains, including softwar nginring, circuit dsign, computr ntworks, databas dsign, social scincs, and biology (s.g. [15,16,25,28,38,40]). Th aim of a graph visualization is to clarly convy th structur of th data and thir rlationships, in ordr to support usrs in thir analysis tasks. In this rspct, and indpndnt of th spcific domain, thr is a gnral consnsus that graph layouts with many dg crossings ar hard to rad, as also witnssd by svral usr studis on th subjct (s.g. [24,35,36,43]). This motivation has gnratd lots of rsarch on finding bounds on th numbr of dg crossings in diffrnt graph familis (s.g. [34,37,42]) and on th problm of automatically computing graph layouts with as fw crossings as possibl (s.g. [4,12]). W rcall that, although it is linar-tim solvabl to dcid whthr a graph admits a planar drawing (i.. a drawing without dg crossings) [10,23], minimizing th numbr of dg crossings is a wll-known NP-hard problm [21]. An mrging rsarch ara, informally rcognizd as byond planarity (s.g. [22,26,29]), concntrats on diffrnt modls of graph planarity rlaxations, which allow dg crossings but forbid spcific configurations that would affct

(c) A crossing configuration that is forbiddn in a 4-quasi planar topological graph. (d) A 4-quasi planar topological graph obtaind from th on of Figur (b) by suitably rrouting th thick dg. th radability of th drawing too much. Forbiddn crossing configurations can b, for xampl, a singl dg that is crossd too many tims [33], a group of mutually crossing dgs [20,39], two dgs that cross at a sharp angl [17], a group of adjacnt dgs crossd by anothr dg [14], or an dg that crosss two indpndnt dgs [5,9,27]. Diffrnt modls giv ris to diffrnt familis of byond planar graphs. Two of th most popular familis introducd in this contxt ar th k-planar graphs and th k-quasi planar graphs, which ar usually dfind in trms of topological graphs, i.., graphs with a gomtric rprsntation in th plan with vrtics as points and dgs as Jordan arcs conncting thir ndpoints. A topological graph is k-planar (k 1) if no dg is crossd mor than k tims, whil it is k-quasi planar (k 2) if it can b drawn in th plan with no k pairwis crossing dgs. Figur 1a shows a crossing configuration that is forbiddn in a 3-planar topological graph. Figur 1b dpicts a 3-planar topological graph that is not 2-planar (.g., th thick dg is crossd thr tims). Figur 1c shows a crossing configuration that is forbiddn in a 4-quasi planar topological graph. Figur 1d dpicts a 4-quasi planar topological graph that is not 3-quasi planar. A graph is k-planar (k-quasi planar) if it is isomorphic to som k-planar (k-quasi planar) topological graph. Clarly, by dfinition, k-planar graphs ar also (k + 1)-planar and k-quasi planar graphs ar also (k + 1)-quasi planar. This naturally dfins a hirarchy of k-planarity and a hirarchy of k- quasi planarity. Also, th class of 2-quasi planar graphs coincids with that of planar graphs. Not that, in th litratur, 3-quasi planar graphs ar also calld quasi planar. Th k-planarity and k-quasi planarity hirarchis hav bn widly xplord in graph thory, graph drawing, and computational gomtry, mostly in trms of dg dnsity. Pach and Tóth [33] provd that a k-planar simpl topological graph with n vrtics has at most kn dgs. W rcall that a topological graph is simpl if any two dgs cross in at most on point and no two adjacnt dgs cross. For k 4, Pach and Tóth [33] also stablishd a finr bound of (k + 3)(n 2) on th dg dnsity, and prov its tightnss for k 2. For k = 3, th bst known uppr bound on th dg dnsity is 5.5n 11, which is tight up to an additiv constant [6,30]. 2

Concrning k-quasi planar graphs, a 20-yar-old conjctur by Pach, Shahrokhi, and Szgdy [32] assrts that, for vry fixd k, th maximum numbr of dgs in a k-quasi planar graph with n vrtics is O(n). Howvr, linar uppr bounds hav bn provn only for k 4. Agarwal t al. [3] wr th first to prov that 3-quasi planar simpl topological graphs hav a linar numbr of dgs. This was gnralizd by Pach t al. [31], who provd that all 3-quasi planar graphs on n vrtics hav at most 65n dgs. This bound was furthr improvd to 8n O(1) by Ackrman and Tardos [2]. For 3-quasi planar simpl topological graphs thy also provd a bound of 6.5n 20, which is tight up to an additiv constant. Ackrman [1] also provd that 4-quasi planar graphs hav at most a linar numbr of dgs. For k 5, svral authors hav shown supr-linar uppr bounds on th dg dnsity of k-quasi planar graphs (s,.g., [13,19,20,32,41]). Th most rcnt rsults ar du to Suk and Walczak [39], who provd that any k-quasi planar simpl topological graph on n vrtics has at most c k n log n dgs, whr c k is a numbr that dpnds only on k. For k-quasi planar topological graphs whr two dgs can cross in at most t points, thy giv an uppr bound of 2 α(n)c n log n, whr α(n) is th invrs of th Ackrmann function, and c dpnds only on k and t. Dspit th many paprs mntiond abov, th rlationships btwn th hirarchis of k-planar and k-quasi planar graphs hav not bn studid yt and only trivial rsults ar known. For xampl, du to th tight bounds on th dg dnsity of 3-planar and 3-quasi planar simpl graphs, it is immdiat to conclud that thr ar infinitly many 3-quasi planar graphs that ar not 3-planar. Also, it can b asily obsrvd that, for k 1, vry k-planar graph is (k +2)-quasi planar. Indd, if a k-planar graph G wr not (k +2)-quasi planar, any topological graph isomorphic to G would contain k + 2 pairwis crossing dgs; but this would imply that any of ths dgs is crossd at last k + 1 tims, thus contradicting th hypothsis that G is k-planar. Contribution. In this papr w focus on simpl topological graphs and prov th first non-trivial inclusion rlationship btwn th k-planarity and th k- quasi planarity hirarchis. W show that vry k-planar graph is (k + 1)-quasi planar, for vry k 3. In othr words, w show that vry k-planar simpl topological graph can b rdrawn so to bcom a (k + 1)-quasi planar simpl topological graph (k 3). For xampl, th simpl topological graph of Figur 1b is 3-planar but not 4-quasi planar. Th simpl topological graph of Figur 1d, on th othr hand, is a 4-quasi planar graph obtaind from th on of Figur 1b by rrouting an dg (but it is no longr 3-planar). Th proof of our rsult is basd on th following novl mthods: (i) A gnral purpos tchniqu to untangl groups of mutually crossing dgs. Mor prcisly, w show how to rrout th dgs of a k-planar topological graph in such a way that all vrtics of a st of (k + 1) pairwis crossing dgs li in th sam connctd rgion of th plan. (ii) A global dg rrouting tchniqu, basd on a matching argumnt, usd to rmov all forbiddn configurations of (k + 1) pairwis crossing dgs from a k-planar simpl topological graph, providd that ths dgs ar untangld. 3

(a) (b) Fig. 2: (a) An untangld 3-crossing; all vrtics blong to th sam fac of th arrangmnt (th outr fac). (b) A tangld 3-crossing; th circld vrtics and th solid vrtics blong to distinct facs of th arrangmnt. Th rmaindr of th papr is structurd as follows. In Sction 2 w giv som basic trminology and obsrvations that will b usd throughout th papr. Sction 3 dscribs our gnral proof stratgy. Sction 4 and Sction 5 provid dtails about mthods (i) and (ii), rspctivly. Conclusions and opn problms ar in Sction 6. 2 Prliminaris W only considr graphs with nithr paralll dgs nor slf-loops. Also, w will assum our graphs to b connctd, as our rsults immdiatly carry ovr to disconnctd graphs. A topological graph G is a graph drawn in th plan with vrtics rprsntd by points and dgs rprsntd by Jordan arcs conncting th corrsponding ndpoints. In notation and trminology, w do not distinguish btwn th vrtics and dgs of a graph, and th points and arcs rprsnting thm, rspctivly. Two dgs cross if thy shar on intrior point and altrnat around this point. Graph G is almost simpl if any two dgs cross at most onc. Graph G is simpl if it is almost simpl and no two adjacnt dgs cross ach othr. Graph G divids th plan into topologically connctd rgions, calld facs. Th unboundd rgion is th outr fac. Not that th boundary of a fac can contain vrtics of th graph and crossing points btwn dgs. If G and G ar two isomorphic graphs, w writ G G. A graph G is k-planar (k-quasi planar) if thr xists a k-planar (k-quasi planar) topological graph G G. Givn a subgraph X of a graph G, th arrangmnt of X, dnotd by A X, is th arrangmnt of th curvs corrsponding to th dgs of X. W dnot th vrtics and dgs of X by V (X) and E(X), rspctivly. A nod of A X is ithr a vrtx or a crossing point of X. A sgmnt of A X is a part of an dg of X that conncts two nods, i.., a maximal uncrossd part of an dg of X. A fan is a st of dgs that shar a common ndpoint. A st of k vrtx-disjoint mutually crossing dgs in a topological graph G is calld a k-crossing. A k-crossing X is untangld if in th arrangmnt A X of X all nods corrsponding to vrtics in V (X) ar incidnt to a common fac. Othrwis, it is tangld. For xampl, 4

v w v D u u (a) (b) Fig. 3: Th rrouting opration for dissolving untangld (k + 1)-crossings. (a) An untangld (k +1)-crossing X. (b) Th rrouting of th dashd dg (u, v) around th markd vrtx w. Th arrangmnt A X is thin rd, th rmovd nods and sgmnts ar gray. Not that th dashd curv is part of A X. th 3-crossing in Figur 2a is untangld, whras th 3-crossing in Figur 2b is tangld. W obsrv th following. Obsrvation 1 Lt G = (V, E) b a k-planar simpl topological graph and lt X b a (k + 1)-crossing in G. An dg in E(X) cannot b crossd by any othr dg in E \ E(X). In particular, for any two (k + 1)-crossings X Y in G, E(X) E(Y ) = holds. Proof. Each dg in a (k + 1)-crossing X crosss ach of th rmaining k dgs in E(X). Sinc graph G is k-planar, dg is not crossd by any othr dg in E \ E(X). 3 Edg Rrouting Oprations and Proof Stratgy W introduc an dg rrouting opration that will b a basic tool for our proof stratgy. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph and considr an untangld (k + 1)-crossing X in G. Without loss of gnrality, th vrtics in V (X) li in th outr fac of A X. Lt = {u, v} E(X) and lt w V (X) \ {u, v}. Dnot by A X th arrangmnt obtaind from A X by rmoving all nods corrsponding to vrtics in V (X)\{u, v, w}, togthr with thir incidnt sgmnts, and by rmoving dg (u, v). Th opration of rrouting = {u, v} around w consists of rdrawing sufficintly clos to th boundary of th outr fac of A X, choosing th routing that passs clos to w, in such a way that crosss th fan incidnt to w, but not any othr dg in E \E(X). S Figur 3b for an illustration. Mor prcisly, lt D b a topological disk that ncloss all crossing points of X and such that ach dg in E(X) crosss th boundary of D xactly twic. Thn, th rroutd dg kps unchangd th parts of that go from u to th boundary of D and from v to th boundary of D. W call th unchangd parts of a rroutd dg its tips and th rmaining part, which routs around w, its hook. 5

Lmma 1. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph and lt X b an untangld (k + 1)-crossing in G. Lt G G b th topological graph obtaind from G by rrouting an dg = {u, v} E(X) around a vrtx w V (X) \ {u, v}. Lt d b th dg of E(X) incidnt to w. G has th following proprtis: (i) Edgs and d do not cross; (ii) Th dgs that ar crossd by in G but not in G form a fan at w; (iii) G is almost simpl. Proof. Conditions (i) and (ii) immdiatly follow from th dfinition of th rrouting opration and from th fact that dg can b drawn arbitrarily clos to th boundary of th outr fac of A X. Sinc G is simpl, in ordr to prov that G is almost simpl, w only nd to show that dg dos not cross any othr dg mor than onc. Th only part of that is drawn in G diffrntly than in G is th on btwn th intrsction points of and th boundary B(D) of th topological disk D that (a) ncloss all crossing points of X and such that (b) ach dg in E(X) crosss th boundary of D xactly twic. By (b) and by th dfinition of th rrouting opration, th two crossing points btwn an dg E(X) and B(D) altrnat with th two crossing points btwn any dg E(X) and B(D) along B(D). Hnc, by rdrawing dg sufficintly clos to any of th two parts of B(D) btwn th two intrsction points of dg and B(D), w ncountr ach dg in E(X) \ {} xactly onc. Thus, dg crosss all th dgs in E(X) \ {, d} xactly onc. This concluds th proof. Lmma 1 dos not guarant that graph G is simpl. Indd, if th dg (u, w) or th dg (v, w) xistd in G, thn th rroutd dg = (u, v) would cross such an dg. W will show in Sction 5 how to fix this problm by rdrawing (u, w) and (v, w). W ar now rady to dscrib our gnral stratgy for transforming a k- planar simpl topological graph G into a simpl topological graph G G that is (k + 1)-quasi planar. Th ida is to pick from ach (k + 1)-crossing X in G an dg X and a vrtx w X not adjacnt to X, and to apply th rrouting opration simultanously for all pairs ( X, w X ), i.., rrouting X around w X. This opration, which w call global rrouting, is wll-dfind sinc th (k + 1)- crossings ar pairwis dg-disjoint by Obsrvation 1. Thr ar howvr svral constraints that hav to b satisfid in ordr for such a global rrouting to hav th dsird ffct. First of all, as mntiond abov, th rrouting opration can only b applid to untangld (k+1)-crossings. Thus, as a first stp, w will show that, in a k-planar simpl topological graph, all tangld (k + 1)-crossings can b rmovd, laving th rsulting graph simpl and k-planar. Mor prcisly, givn a tangld (k + 1)-crossing X, it is possibl to rdraw th whol graph such that ithr at last two dgs of X do not cross or X bcoms an untangld (k + 1)-crossing, and, furthr, any two dgs cross only if thy crossd bfor th rdrawing. Th tchnical dtails for this opration ar dscribd in Sction 4. Notic that, vn assuming that all (k + 1)-crossings ar untangld, thr ar furthr problms that can occur whn prforming all th rrouting oprations indpndntly of ach othr. Spcifically, th rsulting topological graph G may b non-simpl and/or th rrouting may crat nw (k + 1)-crossings. W xplain how to ovrcom ths issus in Sction 5. 6

G f f 2 h 3 g G h G g 8 G f G h G g (a) (b) Fig. 4: Illustration of th untangling procdur in th proof of Lmma 2: (a) A 3-planar simpl topological graph with a 4-crossing X (thickr dgs). (b) Th topological graph rsulting from th procdur that untangls X. 4 Rmoving Tangld (k + 1)-Crossings Th proof of th nxt lmma dscribs a tchniqu to untangl all (k + 1)- crossings in a k-planar simpl topological graph. This tchniqu is of gnral intrst, as it givs mor insights on th structur of k-planar simpl topological graphs. Lmma 2. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph. Thr xists a k-planar simpl topological graph G G without tangld (k + 1)-crossings. Proof. W first show how to untangl a (k + 1)-crossing X in a k-planar simpl topological graph G by nithr crating nw (k + 1)-crossings nor introducing nw crossings. Lt X b a tangld (k + 1)-crossing and lt A X b its arrangmnt. For ach fac f of A X, dnot by V f th subst of vrtics of V (X) incidnt to f. Sinc in X all vrtics hav dgr 1, th sts V f form a partition of V (X). For ach innr fac f of A X, dnot by G f th subgraph of G consisting of th vrtics of V f, and of th vrtics and dgs of G that li in th intrior of f. Rfr to Figur 4a for an illustration. Sinc G is k-planar and X is a (k + 1)- crossing, thr xists no crossing btwn a sgmnt in G f and a sgmnt not in G f. Thrfor, th boundary of f corrsponds to th boundary of a topological disk D f such that G f is k-planarly mbddd insid D f : only th vrtics of V f li on th boundary of D f. For th xtrnal fac h, graph G h consists of th vrtics of V h, and of th vrtics and dgs of G that li outsid A X. In this cas, th topological disk D h is obtaind aftr a suitabl invrsion of G h, if ndd. W can rarrang and dform ach D f such that: (i) th part of th boundary of D f that contains all th vrtics of V f lis on a circl C; (ii) for ach fac g f of A X, disks D f and D g do not intrsct; (iii) th intrior of circl C is mpty. Thn, th k + 1 dgs of X ar rdrawn as straight-lin 7

sgmnts insid C. This construction implis that X is untangld (and som of its dgs may not cross anymor). Also, ach subgraph G f rmains topologically quivalnt to its initial drawing. Thus, two dgs cross aftr th transformation only if thy crossd bfor, which nsurs that th rsulting graph is simpl and no nw (k + 1)-crossing is cratd. W itrativly apply th abov transformation to ach subgraph G f of th nw topological graph until all (k + 1)-crossings ar untangld. This concluds th proof. An illustration of th untangling procdur dscribd in th proof of Lmma 2 is givn in Figur 4. Figur 4a shows an xampl of a 3-planar simpl topological graph G with a tangld 4-crossing X; th dgs of X ar thickr. Facs f, g, and h ar th thr facs of A X whos union contains th vrtics of V (X). Subgraphs G f, G g, and G h ar schmatically dpictd. Figur 4b shows G aftr th transformation that untangls X. 5 Rmoving Untangld (k + 1)-Crossings Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph with k 3. By Lmma 2, w may assum that G has no tangld (k + 1)-crossings. In Sction 5.1, w show how to transform G into a (possibly not almost simpl) (k + 1)-quasi planar topological graph G G. Thn, in Sction 5.2, w dscrib how to mak G simpl without introducing (k + 1)-crossings. 5.1 Obtaining (k + 1)-quasi planarity W first show th xistnc of a global rrouting such that no two dgs of G ar rroutd around th sam vrtx (Lmma 5). Not that this is a ncssary condition for almost simplicity; s Figur 5a. Thn, w show that any global rrouting of G with this proprty yilds a topological graph G with no (k + 1)- crossings (Lmma 9). Th xistnc of this global rrouting is provd by dfining a bipartit graph composd of th vrtics of G and of its (k + 1)-crossings, and by showing that a matching covring all th (k + 1)-crossings always xists. A bipartit graph with vrtx sts A and B is dnotd by H = (A B, E A B). A matching from A into B is a st M E such that ach vrtx in A is incidnt to xactly on dg in M and ach vrtx in B is incidnt to at most on dg in M. For a subst A A, w dnot by N(A ) th st of all vrtics in B that ar adjacnt to a vrtx in A. W rcall that, by Hall s thorm, graph H has a matching from A into B if and only if, for ach st A A, it is N(A ) A. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph and lt S b th st of (k +1)-crossings of G. W dfin a bipartit graph H = (A B, E) as follows. For ach (k + 1)-crossing X S, st A contains a vrtx v(x) and st B contains th ndpoints of E(X) (that is, B = X S V (X)). Also, st E contains an dg btwn a vrtx v(x) A and a vrtx v B if and only if v V (X). W hav th following. 8

Lmma 3. Graph H = (A B, E) is a simpl bipartit planar graph. Also, ach vrtx in A has dgr 2k + 2. Proof. Th graph is simpl and bipartit, by construction. Also, for ach (k +1)- crossing X, vrtx v(x) A is incidnt to th 2k + 2 vrtics in B blonging to V (X). W prov that H is also planar by showing that a planar mbdding of H can b obtaind from G as follows. First, w rmov from G all th vrtics and dgs that ar not in any (k+1)-crossing. Thn, for ach (k+1)-crossing X of G, w rmov th portion of G in th intrior of a topological disk D that ncloss all crossing points of X and such that ach dg in E(X) crosss th boundary of D xactly twic (as dfind in Sction 3) and add vrtx v(x) insid D. Finally, for ach vrtx v in V (X), lt v b th dg in X incidnt to v and lt p v b th intrsction point btwn D and v in G. W complt th drawing of dg (v(x), v) by adding a curv btwn v(x) and p v in th intrior of D without introducing any crossings. Th rsulting topological graph is planar. Lmma 4. Graph H has a matching from A into B. Proof. Lt A A and lt H b th subgraph of H inducd by A N(A ). Sinc th vrtics in A hav dgr 2k + 2, by Lmma 3, w hav E(H ) = (2k + 2) A. Also, sinc H (and thus H ) is bipartit planar, by Lmma 3, w hav E(H ) 2( A + N(A )) 4. Thus, N(A ) k A + 2 > A, and Hall s thorm applis. Lmma 5. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph. It is possibl to xcut a global rrouting on G such that no two dgs ar rroutd around th sam vrtx. Proof. Lt S = {X 1, X 2,..., X h }, with h > 0, b th st of (k + 1)-crossings of G. By Lmma 4, it is possibl to assign a vrtx v i V (X i ) to ach (k + 1)- crossing X i in such a way that no two distinct (k + 1)-crossings ar assignd th sam vrtx. Th statmnt follows by considring a global rrouting such that, for ach (k + 1)-crossing X i, any dg in X i not incidnt to v i is rroutd around v i. Dnot by G th topological graph obtaind from G by xcuting a global rrouting as in Lmma 5. W prov that G has no (k + 1)-crossings. To this aim, w first giv th conditions undr which nw (k + 1)-crossings may aris in G (Lmmas 6 8). Lmma 6. Lt and d b two dgs that cross in G but not in G. Thn, on of and d has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of th othr. Proof. Sinc and d do not cross in G, w may assum that on of thm, say, has bn rroutd. Suppos first that th hook of crosss d. W claim that has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of d. In fact, if d has not bn rroutd, thn th claim is trivially tru; s Figur 5b. On th othr hand, if d has bn 9

d d (a) (b) (c) (d) Fig. 5: (a) Two dgs rroutd around th sam vrtx. (b) (c) Diffrnt cass of dgs that do not cross bfor a global rrouting opration but cross aftrwards. Th vrtics usd for rrouting ar filld grn. (d) A 3-crossing arising from rdrawing thr dgs. rroutd, thn th crossing with must b on a tip of d, and not on its hook, sinc no two dgs hav bn rroutd around th sam vrtx in th global rrouting; s Figur 5c. Thus, th claim follows. Suppos now that a tip of crosss d. Thn, this crossing must b with th hook of d, and th sam argumnt applis to prov that d has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of. Lmma 7. Evry non-rroutd dg is crossd by at most thr rroutd dgs in G. Furthr, if is crossd by xactly thr rroutd dgs, thn two of thm hav bn rroutd around distinct ndpoints of. Proof. Sinc at most on dg has bn rroutd around ach vrtx, by construction, it suffics to prov that thr xists at most on rroutd dg crossing that has not bn rroutd around an ndpoint of. For this, not that any dg with this proprty crosss also in G, by Lmma 6, and thus it blongs to th sam (k + 1)-crossing as. Sinc, by construction, only on dg pr (k + 1)-crossing is rroutd, th statmnt follows. Lmma 8. If G contains a (k + 1)-crossing X, thn X contains at most on dg that has not bn rroutd. Proof. Assum to th contrary that a (k + 1)-crossing X in G contains at last two non-rroutd dgs and. W first claim that thr xists an dg d of E(X ) that dos not cross in G. If has lss than k crossings in G, thn th claim trivially follows. If has k crossings in G but it is not part of a (k + 1)-crossing, thn non of th dgs crossing in G can b part of a (k + 1)-crossing in G, as othrwis thy would hav k crossings in th (k + 1)-crossing and an additional crossing with. Thus, th claim follows also in this cas. Finally, if is part of a (k+1)-crossing X in G, th claim follows from th fact that th dgs of X do not form a (k +1)-crossing in G, du to a rrouting of on of its dgs. Thus, dg d has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of, by Lmma 6, which mans that d is part of a (k + 1)-crossing in G containing nithr nor. 10

Hnc, d and do not cross in G. W prov that thy do not cross in G ithr, a contradiction to th assumption that X is a (k + 1)-crossing. Namly, by Lmma 1, all nw crossings of d with non-rroutd dgs ar on its hook; howvr, sinc and cross in G (which is simpl), thy do not shar any ndpoint, and th statmnt follows. Altogthr th abov lmmas can b usd to prov th following. Lmma 9. Graph G dos not contain any (k + 1)-crossing. Proof. Assum for a contradiction that G contains a (k + 1)-crossing X. By Lmma 8, X contains at most on non-rroutd dg. Suppos that X contains on of such dgs. By Lmma 7, thr ar at most thr rroutd dgs crossing in G. If thy ar lss than 3, thn th claim follows, as k 3. If thy ar thr, say d, h, l, thn by Lmma 7, two of thm, say d and h, hav bn rroutd around (distinct) ndpoints of. Thus, d and h do not cross in G, by Obsrvation 1, as thy blong to diffrnt (k + 1)- crossings. Hnc, thy can cross in G only if on of thm has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of th othr, by Lmma 6. This is not possibl sinc nithr d nor h shar an ndpoint with, as G is simpl. Suppos that X contains only rroutd dgs. Lt b any dg of X and lt w b th vrtx usd for rrouting. Sinc at most on dg in X can b incidnt to w and sinc k 3, thr ar two dgs d, h in X that hav bn rroutd around distinct ndpoints of. As in th prvious cas, w can prov that d and h do not cross. For k = 2, Lmma 9 dos not hold, as som 3-crossings may still appar aftr th global rrouting; s Figur 5d for an illustration and rfr to Sction 6 for a discussion. 5.2 Obtaining simplicity Lmmas 2, 5, and 9 imply that, for k 3, any k-planar simpl topological graph G can b rdrawn such that th rsulting topological graph G G contains no (k+1)-crossings and no two dgs ar rroutd around th sam vrtx. Howvr, th graph G may b not simpl, and vn not almost simpl. W first show how to rmov from G pairs of dgs crossing mor than onc, without introducing (k + 1)-crossings, thus rsulting in a (k + 1)-quasi planar almost-simpl graph (Lmma 11). Thn w show how to rmov crossings btwn dgs incidnt to a common vrtx, still without introducing (k + 1)-crossings (Lmma 12). W will us th following auxiliary lmma. Lmma 10. Graph G is almost-simpl if and only if thr is no pair of dgs such that ach of thm is rroutd around an ndpoint of th othr. Proof. Clarly th condition is ncssary for almost simplicity; s Figur 6a. For th sufficincy, suppos that thr xist two dgs and d crossing twic in G. By Lmma 6 and by th simplicity of G, at last on of thm, say, 11

w d w d E w w X d X d (a) (b) (c) Fig. 6: (a) A doubl crossing btwn two dgs, d, du to a global rrouting. (b) Solving th configuration in (a) by rdrawing. (c) Edgs crossing aftr th transformation. has bn rroutd. By Lmma 1, this rrouting did not introduc two crossings btwn and d, if d has not bn rroutd, sinc th rrouting of a singl dg lavs th graph almost simpl. Thus, w may assum that also d has bn rroutd. This implis that and d blong to diffrnt (k + 1)-crossings of G; so, thy do not cross in G, by Obsrvation 1. Hnc, by Lmma 6, at last on of thm has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of th othr, say around d. This introducs a singl crossing btwn and d, namly btwn th hook of and a tip of d. Thus, th othr crossing must b btwn th hook of d and a tip of, again by Lmma 6 and by th fact that in G no two dgs ar rroutd around th sam vrtx, and so thr is no crossing btwn th hooks of two dgs. Th statmnt follows. Lmma 11. Thr is a (k + 1)-quasi planar almost simpl topological graph G G. Proof. W may assum that G is not almost simpl, as othrwis th statmnt would follow with G = G. By Lmma 10, thr xist pairs of dgs in which ach of th two dgs has bn rroutd around an ndpoint of th othr; s Figur 6a. For ach pair, d, w rmov th two crossings by rdrawing on of th two dgs, say, by following d btwn th two crossings. Mor prcisly, w rdraw th tip of crossd by th hook of d by following th tip of d crossd by th hook of, without crossing it; s Figur 6b. In th following w prov that th graph G obtaind by applying this opration for all th pairs dos not contain nw (k + 1)-crossings and is almost simpl. Obsrv first that ach dg tip is involvd in at most on pair, sinc no two dgs ar rroutd around th sam vrtx. Thus, no tip of an dg is transformd twic in G and no two transformd dgs cross ach othr. Hnc, if a (k + 1)- crossing xists in G, thn it contains xactly on transformd dg. W prov that this is not th possibl. Lt b an dg that has bn rdrawn du to a doubl crossing with an dg d, and lt X and X d b th (k + 1)-crossings of G containing and d, rspctivly. Th dgs crossing in G ar (s Figur 6c): (i) a st X d of dgs 12

w u v w u v u w d v w u d v (a) (b) (c) (d) Fig. 7: (a), (c) Topological graphs that ar not simpl. (b), (d) Avoiding th non-simplicity in (a) and (c) by rdrawing on of th two dgs. in X d crossing th tip of d that has bn usd to rdraw ; (ii) a st X of dgs in X crossing th tip of not crossd by d; (iii) a st E w of dgs incidnt to th vrtx w around which has bn rroutd (and thus cross th hook of ). Not that X d contains all th dgs that cross in G and not in G. Ths dgs do not cross thos in X, sinc thy ar non-rroutd dgs blonging to distinct (k + 1)-crossings of G. Also, thy do not cross dgs in E w, sinc X d dos not contain any dg incidnt to w, othr than d. Finally, th dgs in X d ar at most k 1, sinc X d contains k + 1 dgs and at last two of thm do not cross, namly d and th dg incidnt to th ndpoint of around which d has bn rroutd. Thus, th dgs in X d ar not involvd in any (k + 1)-crossing with. To s that th sam holds for th dgs in X and in E w, not that any (k + 1)-crossing in G involving ths dgs and would also appar in G, which is howvr (k + 1)-quasi planar. To prov that G is almost simpl, w show that th dgs in X d ar crossd only onc by. Rcall that non of ths dgs crosss in G. Also, sinc ach tip is involvd in at most on transformation, all th dgs in X d cross th tip of d (and hnc th tip of that has bn rdrawn) only onc. On th othr hand, it could b that also th othr tip of has bn transformd by following th tip of an dg h and that this transformation introducd a nw crossing btwn and d. But thn d crosss both d and h in G, and hnc by Lmma 6 also in G. This is howvr not possibl, sinc both d and h hav bn rroutd, and hnc thy blong to diffrnt (k + 1)-crossings in G. Lmma 12. Thr is a (k + 1)-quasi planar simpl topological graph G G. Proof. W may assum that G is not simpl, as othrwis th statmnt would follow with G = G. Lt = (u, v) and = (u, w) b two crossing dgs that shar an ndpoint u. Sinc G is simpl, at last on of thm has bn rdrawn, say. W distinguish two cass, basd on whthr (i) has rroutd but not transformd aftrwards, or (ii) has also bn transformd, du to a doubl crossing. In cas (i), dg crosss with its hook, s Figur 7a. W rdraw by following till raching u, as in Figur 7b. This guarants that and no 13

longr cross and that dos not cross any dg twic, sinc crosss only dgs that cross th tip of incidnt to v. Also, no (k + 1)-crossing is introducd. Indd, any nw (k + 1)-crossing should contain, but thn also would b part of this (k + 1)-crossing, which is impossibl sinc and do not cross and G dos not contain (k + 1)-crossings. In cas (ii), lt d b th dg that crosss twic in G ; not that d has not bn transformd, s Figur 7c. Rcall that, by Lmma 10, and d hav bn rroutd on around an ndpoint of th othr. Suppos that th ndpoint of around which d has bn rroutd is v, th cas in which it is u can b tratd analogously. This implis that crosss a tip of d, and thrfor and d ar part of a (k+1)-crossing in G, namly th on that causd th rrouting of d. W rdraw th part of from u to its crossing point with by following, without crossing it, and lav th rst of unchangd, as in Figur 7d. This guarants that and do no cross any longr, and that any nw crossing of is with an dg that also crosss. As in cas (i), this implis that dos not cross any dg twic and that no nw (k + 1)-crossing has bn gnratd. Th nxt thorm summarizs th main rsult of th papr. Thorm 2. Lt G b a k-planar simpl topological graph. Thn, thr xists a (k + 1)-quasi planar simpl topological graph G such that G G. Proof. First rcall that, by Lmma 2, w can assum that G dos not contain any tangld (k + 1)-crossing. W apply Lmma 5 to comput a global rrouting for G in which no two dgs ar rroutd around th sam vrtx. By Lmma 9, th rsulting topological graph G G is (k + 1)-quasi planar. Also, by Lmma 11, if G is not almost simpl, thn it is possibl to rdraw som of its dgs in such a way that th rsulting topological graph G G is almost simpl and rmains (k + 1)-quasi planar. Finally, by Lmma 12, if G is not simpl, thn it can b mad so, again by rdrawing som of its dgs, whil maintaining (k +1)- quasi-planarity. This concluds th proof that thr xists a (k + 1)-quasi planar simpl topological graph G G. 6 Conclusions and Opn Problms W provd that, for any k 3, th family of k-planar graphs is includd in th family of (k + 1)-quasi planar graphs. This rsult rprsnts th first non-trivial rlationship btwn th k-planar and th k-quasi planar graph hirarchis, and contributs to th litratur that studis th connction btwn diffrnt familis of byond planar graphs (s,.g. [8,9,11,18]). Svral intrsting problms rmain opn. Among thm: Th main opn qustion is whthr 2-planar graphs ar quasi planar. Th rason why our tchniqu dos not apply to th cas of k = 2 is mainly du to th possibl xistnc of thr rroutd dgs that ar pairwis crossing aftr a global rrouting (as in Figur 5d). A concivabl approach to ovrcom this 14

issu is by matching mor than on vrtx to ach (k + 1)-crossing, in ordr to xcut a global rrouting that dos not crat forbiddn configurations. In fact, within th lins of Lmma 4, w provd that up to k vrtics can b rsrvd for ach (k + 1)-crossing. Nonthlss, it is not clar how to control which vrtics of a (k + 1)-crossing ar assignd to it in th matching, which maks it difficult to xploit ths xtra vrtics. Not that it was rcntly provd that optimal 2-planar graphs ar (3-)quasi planar [7]. W rcall that an n-vrtx 2-planar graph is optimal if it has 4n 8 dgs. For k 3, on can also ask whthr th family of k-planar graphs is includd in th family of k-quasi planar graphs. For k = 2 th answr is trivially ngativ, as 2-quasi planar graphs coincid with th planar graphs. On th othr hand, optimal 3-planar graphs ar known to b (3-)quasi planar [7]. W rcall that an n-vrtx 3-planar graph is optimal if it has 5.5n 11 dgs. For sufficintly larg valus of k, on can vn invstigat whthr vry k- planar simpl topological (spars) graph G is f(k)-quasi planar, for som function f(k) = o(k). On can study non-inclusion rlationships btwn th k-planar and th k- quasi planar graph hirarchis, othr than thos that ar asily drivabl from th known dg dnsity rsults. For xampl, for any givn k > 3, can w stablish an intgr function h(k) such that som h(k)-planar graph is not k-quasi planar? Acknowldgmnts.
