The laboratory, Katahdin Analytical Services, Westbrook Maine, prepared and analyzed the samples in accordance with Maine Department of Environmental Protection Diesel Range Organics Method (DRO ME DEP ). Soil samples were prepared using US EPA Method 3550A (sonication) and aqueous samples were prepared using US EPA Method 3510A (separatory funnel). The data validation was conducted in accordance with Region I, EPA-New England Data Validation Functional Guidelines (12/96), the QAPP for Maine Yankee Decommissioning Project, (rev01), and in conjunction with the individual methods and the laboratory established criteria. The following items were validated: Chain of custody documents * Sample log in documents * Preservation and Technical Holding Times * Initial Calibrations * Continuing Calibrations * Laboratory and Field Blank Analyses * Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicate Results
2 Data Validation Report (continued) Page 2 Laboratory Control Samples (blank spikes) * Laboratory/Field Duplicate Results * System Monitoring Compounds and Fractionation Compounds (Surrogate Recoveries) * PE Samples/Accuracy Check (NA) Compound Quantitation and Reported Quantitation Limits * * - All Criteria met The following information was used to generate the Data Validation Memorandum Attachments: Table I Table II Recommendation Summary Table- summarizes validation recommendations: ME DEP DRO Overall Evaluation of Data- summarizes site DQOs and potential usability issues: ME DEP DRO Data summary tables to be provided in an electronic format. Overall Evaluation of Data and Potential Usability Issues Data Use- To determine the nature and extent of potential contamination, to identify any potential contaminant source areas requiring further evaluation, to support any remedial activities that may be necessary to minimize potential risk to human health and environment. Accuracy and precision acceptance criteria are specified in the QAPP for Maine Yankee Decommissioning Project, (rev01). Where no QAPP acceptance criteria are specified, the laboratory acceptance criteria were used for evaluation. Laboratory acceptance criteria are provided in the data package. Sample results are reported to the laboratory s Practical Quantitation Limit (PQL). Results are adjusted for the sample mass, total solids and dilutions. Sample extracts for MY05TP220A(0-0.5) and MY05TP223A(0-0.5) were each diluted by 10X prior to analyses. Surrogate recoveries could not be determined for these samples due to dilution. Chain of Custody Documents The sampling chain of custody documents were properly signed and dated. Internal custody documents were not submitted. Review of internal custody documents is not part of a Tier II validation for this project. The laboratory provided sample pick-up. Custody seals were not present. Sample Log-in Documents
3 Data Validation Report (continued) Page 3 Laboratory Sample Receipt Condition Reports (SRCR) indicate that all samples were received in good condition. The cooler temperature was 1.0 o C. There were no additional deviations indicated on the SRCRs. The validation memo is consistent with the laboratory data package sample IDs. Preservation and Technical Holding Times All samples were prepared and analyzed within holding time criteria. All sample preservation requirements for DRO were met. Initial Calibration There was 1 initial calibration curve analyzed for this data. All method acceptance criteria were met. Samples were analyzed using a 5 point calibration curve including the origin. The low standard is at the laboratory s project quantitation limit (PQL). All correlation coefficients were greater than No results were qualified based upon the initial calibration results. Continuing Calibration There were 6 continuing calibration standards analyzed. All % Differences for the DRO ranges were less than 20%. All calibration method acceptance criteria were met. No field sample results were qualified based upon the continuing calibration results. Laboratory and field blank Analyses There was one soil laboratory preparation blank reported in this data package. No blank contamination was reported. No soil field sample data were qualified due to laboratory method blank or field blank contamination. There was one aqueous laboratory preparation blank reported in this data package. No blank contamination was reported. No aqueous field sample data were qualified due to laboratory method blank contamination. The DRO result for aqueous equipment blank sample MY05TP220A(EB) is reported as nondetected (U). Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicate Results Soil sample MY05TP220A(0-0.5) was analyzed as the MS/MSD pair. The sample extract was analyzed following a 10X dilution and the MS/MSD extracts were analyzed at a 2X dilution. Sample Spike Conc Sample Conc MS Conc MSD Conc MY05TP220A(0-0.5) 18 mg/kg 131 mg/kg 175 mg/kg 140 mg/kg
4 Data Validation Report (continued) Page 4 The sample concentration is greater than 4 X the matrix spike concentration (18 mg/kg). The MS/MSD %RPD is 22% and the % RPD limit is 20%. The DRO result for sample MY05TP220A(0-0.5) is reported as estimated (J). Laboratory Control Sample Results There was one soil LCS reported in this data package. The LCS DRO recovery was within the laboratory s acceptance criteria (60-140%). No field sample data were qualified based upon LCS results. MS/MSD results were used to evaluated precision. There was one aqueous LCS/LCSD pair reported in this data package. All LCS and LCSD recoveries were within the laboratory s acceptance criteria (57-103%). All RPD criteria were met (<20%). No field sample data were qualified based upon LCS or LCSD results. Field/Laboratory Duplicates No aqueous field duplicate results were reported. The only aqueous sample in this data package is the equipment rinsate blank MY05TP220A(EB). There are no QAPP criteria for DRO field duplicate %RPD results. The QAPP acceptance criteria for field duplicates for EPH is <50%. The laboratory acceptance criteria for LCS/LCSD and MS/MSD for DRO is <20%. Soil samples MY05TP222A(0-0.5) and MY05TP223A(0-0.5) were a field duplicate pair. DRO results were 33 mg/kg and 110 mg/kg respectively. Sample MY05TP222A(0-0.5) was analyzed non-diluted and MY05TP223A(0-0.5) was analyzed at a 10X dilution. The % RPD is 108%. The DRO results for soil samples MY05TP222A(0-0.5) and MY05TP223A(0-0.5) are reported as estimated (J). No laboratory duplicate was reported. The MS/MSD precision acceptance criterion was met. System Monitoring Compounds (Surrogate Recoveries) Surrogate recoveries for samples MY05TP220A(0-0.5) and MY05TP223A(0-0.5) could not be evaluated due to sample dilutions. Samples were diluted by 10X. The ortho-terphenyl surrogate recovery for sample MY05TP222A(0-0.5) (60%) is within the laboratory's acceptance criteria (46-106%). No results are qualified based upon the surrogate recoveries. The surrogate recoveries for the MS/MSD were 172% and 162% respectively. The MS/MSD extracts were diluted by 2X. The surrogate recovery for aqueous equipment blank sample MY05TP220A(EB) (62%) is within the laboratory s acceptance criteria (46-104%). PE/Accuracy Check
