Credit Hours: five Instuctor Information: Dr. Karen Antell Badgley Hall 303E kantell@eou.edu Prerequisites: BIOL 101 or BIOL 211 or BOT 201 Time and place of the course: This course is self-study, utilizing a text book and supplementary materials provided through Blackboard. Students must follow the timeline and testing schedule outlined in the Course Schedule. Required text and Other Materials: Mauseth, James D Botany, 4th Ed.; Saunders College Publ. Learning Outcomes: Students will read selected chapters from the text and complete chapter tests over the material read. Students successfully completing this course should have an introductory to intermediate level of knowledge of the morphology and anatomy of plant leaves, stems, roots and flowers. They will have an introductory level of understanding of the processes of plant growth from both apical meristems and vascular cambium. Students will read a survey of the plant kingdoms and

2 will learn the basic characteristics of each of the major kingdoms and divisions of organisms that are considered by many to be plants, including Cyanobacteria, Autotrophic Protista (Algae), Non-vascular plants, Lower vascular plants, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Emphasis will be on evolutionary biology of these groups. Course Requirements: Students will read and be tested over the content of the following chapters in the text: 5, 6, 7, 8, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23. I recommend that students answer the review questions at the end of each chapter as practice for the exams, but these need not be submitted to me. Grading Policies: Grades will be assigned based on percentage of the total points earns: % = A; 75-84% = B; % = C; 50-64% = D; below 50% = F. Means of Assessment: Students will complete nine chapter tests. These are multiple-choice format, and are completed on-line with an approved proctor present. Students may take the exams any time after completing their reading of the chapters. The first four exams must be completed by the end of the 5th week of the term. The remaining five exams must be completed by Tuesday of finals week. The exams are "closed book" and no notes may be used during the test. Each test is worth 40 points. A = %; B = 75-84%; C = 65-74%; D = 50-64%; F = below 50% Brief Outline of Course: I. Plant Anatomy Chapter 5: Tissues and the Primary Growth of Stems There are two major components to this chapter. Students will begin by learning the characteristics of the three types of plant cells, parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma. Then students will explore how specialized types of these cells are organized in primary stems of plants. In addition to photos in the text, there are also photographs of microscope slides from the EOU botany lab available for home study. Chapter 6: Leaves Leaves are extremely diverse and this diversity of anatomy and morphology allows plants to grow in many different types of habitats. Students will focus on the anatomical characteristics of typical leaf mesophylls of a variety of plants, including both monocotyledons and eudicotyledons. The final several pages of the chapter describe leaves of conifers and insectivorous plants.

3 Chapter 7: Roots Plants use roots for more than just water and nutrient uptake. This chapter explores how roots grow, their anatomical characteristics, and other aspects of root biology. Chapter 8: Structure of Woody Plants Chapters 5, 6 and 7 all explain how plants grow through primary meristems. Chapter 8 provides detailed information about how plants produce woody tissues and expand their stem and root diameters. II. Plant Diversity Chapter 19: Algae Algae are a diverse group of organisms with many plant-like qualities that inhabit primarily aquatic habitats, both marine and freshwater. Chapter 19 is a survey of evolution and diversity within this complex group. Chapter 20: Nonvascular Plants: Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts Mosses, liverworts and hornworts were the first terrestrial plants to colonize terrestrial habitats. Despite their early origins, they persist as common and important components of many ecosystems today, and can be found almost anywhere. Chapter 21: Vascular Plants Without Seeds Soon after colonizing terrestrial habitats, plants developed vascular tissues for water transport and structural support. The result was a rapid diversification into many different groups. This chapter explores the evolution of these groups. Chapter 22: Seed Plants I: Gymnosperms Seeds were a major adaptation that allowed plants to invest increased resources in providing for the next generation. Seed plants ultimately took over most terrestrial habitats worldwide. For many millions of years, these seed plants succeeded without benefit of flowers and relied on wind pollination to transport male gametes throughout their populations. Many ancient gymnosperms are now extinct. This chapter contains a description of the groups that were important in ancient times, and those that led to modern descendants that populate many parts of the world today. Chapter 23: Seed Plants II: Angiosperms Ultimately, flowering plants came to dominate the Earth as we know it today. These plants rely on insects, wind and other mechanisms to transport pollen within their populations, and the astounding variety of floral structures developed to facilitate this. Our understanding of flowering plant evolution has grown enormously in recent years, and this chapter of the text has been re-written to include comprehensive coverage of current theories about evolution and relationships among Angiosperms.

4 General Education Category and Outcomes: Natural, Mathematical and Information Sciences (SMI): SMI courses focus on the physical and biological world, as well as the body of knowledge centered on concepts such as quantity, structure, space, and change using an empirical methodology. SMI courses work on the assumption that there is a rational and understandable order to the universe. Some of these disciplines introduce and work with models for understanding physical phenomena; while other are typically involved in describing and predicting physical behaviors. A central focus of SMI is on the phenomena exhibited by natural objects, organic or inorganic, and their substances; numerical analysis and statistics; and mathematical and information structures and patterns. Upon completion of course work in SMI, students should be able to employ scientific methods in the laboratory or in fieldwork as defined by the specific discipline(s) or sub-discipline(s) the student has studied, analyze and evaluate data based on discipline-defined criteria, observe accurately, integrate knowledge and data with the fundamental concepts of the specific discipline(s) or sub-discipline(s) the student has studied, and report results effectively both orally and in writing. Bot 202, Plant Biology II fits the criteria for the SMI category of general education because of the focus on the biological world. Study will include models for understanding the physical characteristics of plant cell structure and the organization of specialized cells within leaves, stems, roots and shoots of vascular plants. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the taxonomy, specialized structures, and reproductive processes of groups of organisms that may be considered to be plants or plant-like. Students will demonstrate increased vocabulary, content and conceptual knowledge of plant anatomy and diversity. They will demonstrate their ability to integrate and synthesize knowledge of the subject and communicate this understanding in writing. Program outcomes that will be met by Bot 202 are Category #1, Content Knowledge and Category #2, Inquiry. The Breadth outcome that will be met by this course is #6, Problem Solving and Analytical Thinking (SMI). This course represents the Inquiry Category for General Learning Outcomes: BOT 202 includes investigation of the anatomy of specific types of plant cells and anatomy and morphology at the organismal level. This course also introduces students to the diversity of plant-like organisms. Much of the course relies on students learning to examine microscopic images and to interpret the details of anatomical structure. In addition to learning to observe anatomical structure, students also develop skills related to interpreting the function of the different structures and understanding the relationships between form and function. Specific assignments that will be used to assess these outcomes include: Students complete nine tests in which they must think creatively about plant-like qualities of different types of organisms, and demonstrate basic understanding of the roles of specialized cells and their functions in plant anatomy and morphology. The course includes a rigorous

5 application of this knowledge to understanding evolutionary diversification and relationships among groups of plants. Students employ approaches to inquiry from different disciplines, including chemistry, physics and history of science.
