2 Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. Plants use light to make their own food.

3 Where does photosynthesis occur? Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves of a plant.

4 Photosynthesis takes place in the cell part known as the CHLOROPLAST

5 What is needed for photosynthesis to occur? Light is needed for photosynthesis to occur. The plant s chloroplasts use the light to make a sugar called glucose.

6 Why do plants need glucose? Glucose is the food for the plant. It gives the plant energy to grow.

7 Plants make enough glucose to be used during the night and on cloudy days when they don t get sunlight. The extra glucose is stored in the plant s leaves and other parts as starch.

8 What happens during photosynthesis?

9 Six molecules of carbon dioxide react with six molecules of water to form 1 molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen.

10 Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. Chemical reactions can be shown in the form of a chemical equation.

17 How does photosynthesis help us? During the process of photosynthesis, oxygen is produced. The oxygen released is necessary for all living things.

18 Why is this important to us? We cannot make our own food Glucose= energy, we must get our food from plants. Plants are the first step in the food chain.
