1 Spring Break Packet Name: General Instructions All students are offered this extra credit assignment. This assignment is worth up to 40 points toward the Biology final exam. The assignment is broken down into 4 categories for the students to aid in their study efforts of the concepts covered in the class since the beginning of the school year (August current). Each category is worth up to 10 points and will be graded based on completion, and accuracy in terms of meeting the standards of the class for that area. Students are welcome to attempt and/or complete some or all of this assignment; thus, whatever is completed will be graded it is not all or nothing, partial credit will be given. Submission Instructions This assignment is an extra credit opportunity; thus, no late submissions will be allowed. This assignment is due based on the manner that the student would like to submit. However, all aspects of the assignment must be submitted at one time/together. Online submission due on Wednesday, April 12, 11:59pm Hand submission due on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 before the end of YOUR class period Yearly Concepts Covered these are based on large concepts, and the students are able to select and/or discuss any sub-concept to the large concepts throughout this assignment. Please note that many of the concepts listed is based on the categories in Khan Academy or textbook vocabulary chapters. Any standard/unit and concept with a (*) denotes the concept we will be covering after spring break and no work is required in that area. DO NOT write in this area. Assignment 1: Understanding Vocabulary Assignment 2: Conceptual Understanding Assignment 3: Making Connections Assignment 4: Review
2 Assignment 1: Understanding Vocabulary Why do this? A large portion of Biology rests on the understanding of the terminology used, whether it is the ability to answer the question or understand the question being asked. What do I do? Using the link provided, students will select any 5 words and their definitions from the outlined chapters, and write/type them down OR build a separate quizlet account folder and enter them all in. If the student selects to enter all the terms into their quizlet, they will need to provide the link to their page below. Chapters to cover 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 Assignment 2: Conceptual Understanding Why do this? This section is designed to give the students additional support in the concepts we have covered this year through video notes. There are times when students don t fully understand the concepts until they hear it again and/or differently than the initial instruction. What do I do? Using the link to Khan Academy, select 1 video from each concept covered listed in the table above (14 total), and write down 15 notes as you are viewing the video. Under the video notes, write a paragraph explaining if the video aided in your understanding of the concept and how. Then write another paragraph explaining whether you would or would not recommend this video to a friend and why. Assignment 3: Making Connections Why do this? It is important for students to realize that their interests matter, and that the concepts learned in class expand outside of the classroom through real world applications. What do I do? Google search a research article on any concept that you like that relates to science. Write a minimum 1 page summary of the article, limiting the summary to 2 pages. At the end of the summary, write a full paragraph explaining how that article or the research relates to concepts covered in class. Be sure to provide the citation to the article AND that the article was written in the past 25 years. Assignment 4: Let s Review Where have we been? /Where are we now? /Where are we going? Why do this? As we progress through the concepts, it is important to recognize the continuity that exists. In addition, it is important to be able to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses within those concepts in order to correct the gaps in understanding. What do I do? Answer each of the following questions below. You may utilize other resources to help answer the questions. While I will not formally grade each questions response, it is important that you answer as many to the best of your ability.
