4 Key Facts about the Badí Calendar The Badí' calendar, like the Gregorian calendar commonly used in most western countries, is a solar calendar tied to the sun s position relative to Earth. The length of a year is based upon the amount of time it takes Earth to orbit around the sun (.00 days). The name Badí' means Wondrous. The first year of the Badí' Calendar is the year in which the Declaration of the Báb took place (). Each year consists of months of days, each day starts and ends at sunset. The first day of the year, Naw-Rúz, is whichever day the sun s position crosses Earth s equator from south to north, on the Gregorian calendar this falls around March. The last month of the Bahá'í year ('Alá') is the month of fasting and is placed immediately before the following year s Naw-Rúz. months x days = days, the remaining or days between each Naw-Rúz form the Ayyám-i-Há festival, placed before the last month of the year, between Mulk and 'Alá'. 5 The months are all named after attributes of God and each day of the month is also named using the same pattern, so each day has both a weekday name and a monthday name. The week is days long and the first day () falls mainly on the western calendar s Saturday. (mainly on Friday) is the day of rest. Every years are collectively called a Váḥid (meaning unity), and each year of a Váḥid is given its own individual name, B.E. is called Dál. Each Váḥid starts with Earth, the moon and the Sun in an alignment that only repeats once every nineteen years, astronomers call this a Metonic cycle, representing the time it takes for the solar and lunar cycles to coincide with each other. Váḥids are collectively called a Kull-i-Shay (meaning "All Things"). B.E. started the tenth Váḥid of the first Kull-i-Shay. Aries, a sign of the astrological zodiac, is the first of twelve equal segments representing the annual path that the sun takes relative to Earth, starting when the sun is at angle of 0 degrees and rising north, which is the moment of the Bahá equinox ( Bahá, around March). The exact moment at which the sun makes this transition relative to Earth is a fixed moment in time which, because we all live in different time zones, falls at a different time and/or date depending upon your location. In order to fix "the day that the sun entereth the sign of Aries" to be the same date for everybody, a specific location had to be chosen as the official observation point. Ṭihrán (Bahá'u'lláh's birthplace) is this location, therefore the last sunset in the city of Ṭihrán before the Bahá equinox marks the start of the day of Naw-Rúz, and Naw-Rúz falls on that same day everywhere.

7 About Bahá í Holy Days There are Holy Days which are obligatory for Bahá ís to observe each year. Work is prohibited on nine of them, all except for the Day of the Covenant and the Ascension of Abdu l-bahá. The Birth of the Báb and The Birth of Bahá u lláh are celebrated on the first and second days following the eighth new moon after Naw-Rúz, respectively. These dates move on the calendar and may fall in Mashíyyat, 'Ilm, or Qudrat (October or November). Next year ( B.E.) is the bicentennial year of the Birth of the Báb. As it will be the fifth year of the current Váḥid, next year is also named Báb. Dates of Naw-Rúz, the Twin Holy Days and Ayyám-i-Há to B.E.
