6 Unit 8 The solar system Student A The Earth is one of eight planets which circle around a central star, the Sun. The Sun and its planets are called a solar system. The eight planets in order from the nearest to the Sun are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There are also three dwarf planets called Pluto, Ceres and Eris. Some scientists think there is another planet in our solar system. They call it Planet X. Our Sun is about 4,600,000,000 years old. It is huge and very, very hot. If you imagine the Earth as a pea, then the Sun is a big beach ball. Student B Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. During the day it is really hot on Mercury it s 350ºC, 7 times hotter than the highest temperature on Earth. And at night it s really cold, -170ºC. It isn t surprising that no living things live there! Mercury gets its name from the messenger of the Roman gods. Mercury ran very fast, and the planet Mercury moves faster around the Sun than any of the other planets! Venus is the brightest planet. In some months it shines in the west at sunset and is called the Evening Star. In other months it shines in the east at sunrise and is called the Morning Star. It s hotter than Mercury with temperatures of 500ºC! This makes it the hottest planet. Mars is the next planet after Earth. It is called the Planet because of its colour. Mars is like Earth in some ways. It has frozen poles, snowy mountains, and volcanoes. Scientists have looked and looked for living things on Mars, but they haven t found anything yet! Student C Jupiter is the largest of all the planets, but it spins really fast! It spins much faster than Earth. A day on Jupiter is just 9 Earth hours and 50 minutes! Saturn is the second biggest planet. It is ninety-five times heavier than Earth. Many people think it is the most beautiful planet because of the dust and rocks around it that look like rings. It has 17 moons. People discovered the planets from Mercury to Saturn thousands of years ago. Uranus was discovered in1781 and Neptune in1846. They are a similar size but look very different. Uranus is blue-green and Neptune is a pretty dark blue with white clouds. One year on Uranus is 84 Earth years, yet it takes only 17 hours and 14 minutes to spin around. This means that there are 42,000 Uranian days in a Uranian year! PHOTOCOPIABLE Happy Earth New Edition Oxford University Press 35
