1 Social Studies Mr. Poirier Introduction Test - Study Guide Study Guide given in class on Monday, September 15, 2014 Test Date: Friday, September 19, 2014 I. Study the following Vocabulary Words to be defined: Prehistory, History, Geography, 5 Themes of Geography, Legacy A. Vocabulary that should be also known but will not be asked to be defined: Artifact, Fossil, Ancestor, Descendant II. Time Line prepare yourself to be able to label a time line as we did in class and in homework. Make sure to always label each side of the year zero appropriately. Know what BC, BCE, AD and CE means and students should be able to put into order a number of significant past events into chronological order. III. Geography Directions, Hemispheres & Latitude and Longitude Review just as we did in class identify and label Cardinal and Intermediate Directions and the Compass Rose. Label hemispheres, equator, Prime Meridian and also please be able to find the absolute location for a geographic site using the latitude and longitude parallels. IV. How do we know about the past? At the completion of each unit there will always be an Open Response. The Open Response for the Introductory Unit will be started on in class on Wednesday September 17 and will need to be completed that night for homework. Again, this rough draft will be due on Thursday, September 18. The final draft will be worked on after the test is taken and will be graded separately as a quiz. The final draft will be due the following Friday, September 26 th. Open Responses will be 8 to 10 sentences. Remember to answer question persuasively or argumentatively. NO I statements. Give supporting details and conclusion. This sounds simple, but make sure your response makes sense. V. Study and Relax I have asked you throughout the first 3 weeks of school to dedicate time to prepare for this quiz. If you have studied just 3 to 4 minutes a night Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights in the past 3 weeks that time adds up. Remember to learn to study a bit at a time. Waiting to the night before any test / quiz is not how to learn to study. Please develop habits in 6 th grade that will benefit you in the future. My suggestion in class was to create index cards with one side having the vocabulary word and the other side having the definition. Quiz yourself and if you can have a friend or family member quiz you that might be helpf ul too. Good luck. If you need help please come on in and ask for it. I will be happy to assist you. 2 INTRODUCTION: Class Notes * STARRED INFORMATION WILL BE ON INTRODUCTION TEST *TIME LINES Time Lines are graphic organizers & great study guides to study human prehistory as well as ancient history. TIME MEASUREMENT *Prehistory - Time before Writing ( 2 million BC or BCE ) *History - the written chronological record of significant past events (3500 BC or BCE to the present) Ancient History BC or BCE to 476 AD or CE Chronological - in time order, the order that a series of events took place from the oldest event to the most recent *BC - Before Christ *BCE - Before the Common Era *AD - from the *Latin, Anno Domini which in English means "In the year of our Lord" *CE - Common Era LANGUAGE LEGACY: WORDS ARE ARTIFACTS FROM THE PAST Latin was the language of the Ancient Romans. The original people who created the city of Rome sometime around 753 BC where from the Latium Plain in Central Italy. These people were referred to as the Latins, but will become better known for their capitol city as the Romans. Over a billion people today speak a corruption of Latin. French, Italian,

3 Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian are Romance languages whose roots are Latin. English although it has Roman and even Greek influences is considered German. At the end of the Western Roman Empire in 476 BC, Germanic tribes invaded and settled within the Roman Empire including the Angles. The Angles settled in Roman Great Britain and their territory became known as Angle Land. Over time Angle Land corrupted to its present form England and the people who lived there became known as the English and spoke the English language. This is why English is considered a Germanic language. IN-CLASS VOCABULARY *Legacy - something passed down from generation to generation and improved upon *Artifact - something made by humans left behind such as tools, weapons, buildings or edifices, pottery, written documents & language Historical Corruption - a word or phrase that has been altered from its original form *Fossil - something made by nature left behind such as a bone, entire skeletal system, imprint Ancestor - a person from your family that lived before you Descendant - a person from your family that will live after you Republic - Latin term "People's Thing" referring to a representative democracy borrowed from the Ancient Greeks (Athenians) Democracy - "Power of the People" or "People's Grip" form of government created by Ancient Greeks (Athenians) at end of 5th century BC GEOGRAPHY REVIEW *Geography - the study of the earth, the influence of the earth on humans and the human influence on it *5 Themes of Geography 1. Location: Absolute & Relative 2. Human and Environmental Interactions 3. Place 4. Region 5. MOVEMENT *DIRECTIONS Cardinal Directions Compass Rose *HEMISPHERES Intermediate Directions

4 Hemi is the Greek word for "half" and therefore a hemisphere is a half a circle. The equator divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Prime Meridian and th International Date Line divide Eastern and Western Hemisph *ABSOLUTE LOCATION: Using Latitude & Longitude Latitude & Longitude Lines are sometimes referred to as PARALLELS. Latitude Lines run East to West, but are measured North or South of the Equator. Longitude Lines run North to South, but are measured East or West of the Prime Meridian.

5 Determining the Absolute Location of a location requires a simultaneous reading of first latitude and then longitude. Can you find this absolute location: (42 degrees North Latitude, 70 degrees West Longitude)?
