1 Chapter 6 Jaimini Astrology 6.1 INTRODUCTION Jaimini System of Astrology marks a definite departure from the cannons of Sage Parasara or the original system of Astrology now in vogue throughout India. It is inappropriate to say that Jaimini and Parasara Systems of Astrology at complete variance from each other, or they two different systems. On the contrary, it is reasonable to say that Jaimini System is mainly an offshoot of the general system of Astrological Science propounded by Sage Parasara; in the works of Sages Parasara and Vriddhayavana, frequent references made to the specific and distinct methodology employed by Sage Jaimini. The source of Astrological Knowledge in India is undoubtedly the work of Sage Parasara. Sage Jaimini may have adopted certain aspects of Sage Parasara and given them a new orientation consistent with his own genius, and thus develpoed almost a new system. This system did not become popular with majority of astrologers, because of the fact that principles were presented in the shape of Sutras or aphorims, which always capable of variety of interpretations. Subsequently, astrologers, like Neelakantha and Premanidhi, elucidated or explained Sutras through valuable commentaries, thus facilitating easy comprehension of all levels of scholar. Jaimini System has its own distinct features. These features include: (a) introduction of Karakas, (b) the peculiar method of longevity, (c) the simplicity with which the planets strengths determiend, (d) the appntly various types of Dasas, (e) the emphasis laid on the conception of horoscope, (f) the distinction attached to Arudha and (g) the great importance given to Karakamsa, and its bearing on determinaton of livelihood. The above features invest the whole Jaimini System of Astrology with a certain amount of uniqueness and originality. Thus, it is no wonder that the Jaimini System came to be looked upon as a separate branch of astrological knowledge, though it is a doubless part of the Parasara System of Astrology.

It is not so Explanation of Essential Items Some of the essential items of Jaimini Astrology explained in detail here though they have been introduced in the earlier chapters. (a) Karakas Each Planet is supposed to be the Karaka or indicative of certain events in life. The functions of the Karaka similar to those of the Bhava or House. Karakas play important role in the analysis of horoscope. (b) Natural Karakas As per Parasara System, the Karaka Planets all constant, irrespective of their horoscope positions. The main Karakas listed in Table 6.2. Karakas important factors, especially in measuring Gochara or transit results. Even when certain Bhava is weak, the event signified by the Bhava could be said to prosper provided the appropriate Karaka is strong. 252

A planet cannot aspect another planet which is 30 ahead of it and 60 behind it. The aspect begins from beyond 30 ahead of it and stops short of 300 ahead of it. (2) Aspects in Jaimini System: It seems that in the Jaimini System, the aspect angles ignored. All movable Signs aspect all fixed Signs, except the adjacent ones. All fixed Signs aspect all movable Signs, except the adjacent ones. The dual Signs aspect each other. A summary of the same is presented in Table 6.3. (3) Range of Aspect: The ranges of longitudes is given in Table 6.4 of different Signs and Planets in them. 253

(1) Formation of Argalas: Planets in the 4 th, 2 nd, 11 th and 5 th Houses from an aspecting body (except Ketu) cause or become Argalas. Lords become Argalas, which in the 9 th House from Ketu. (2) Benefic Argalas: The natural benefics in the 4 th, 2 nd, 11 th and 5 th Houses from an aspecting body (except Ketu) act as Benefic Argalas. (3) Malefic Argalas: The natural malefics in the 4 th, 2 nd, 11 th, 5 th and 3 rd Houses from an aspecting body (except Ketu) act as Malefic Argalas. Planet in 3 rd House from aspecting body becomes Malefic Argala, when more than 2 malefics present. (4) Counteracting Places of Argalas: Table 6.5 presents identified positions in which the Argala action is counteracted. If a planet obstructing Argala is weaker than a Planet causing Argala or less in Longitude, the Argala cannot be counteracted. 254

5 Chapter 6: Jaimini Astrology (5) Significance of Argalas: Fortunate results confined in the Dasas of Rasis, in which Benefic Argalas caused. Evil results will occur during Dasas of Rasis, in which Papargalas centered. If Benefic Argalas have reference to, i.e., fall in Pada Lagna or the 7 th House, and not neutalised, the person will be highly fortunate and wealthy. Karakas in Parasara School different from Karakas in Jaimini School. The determination of 7 Karakas of Jaimini School explained. But, there certain exceptions to the general rule governing determination of the Karaka. Sometimes, 2 or more Planets may occupy the same degree of Longitude, so that they may sh the same Lordship. A contingency, like this may rly occurs, but it cannot be entirely ruled out. Under such exceptional circumstances, when 2 or 3 Planets have to sh the same Lordship, a few Lordships become vacant and these have to be filled up by Rahu and the other natural Karakas. If Sun is the Bhatrukaraka, and Moon and Mars have the same Longitude, then all the three Planets become Bhatrukaraka. This means, that Karakatwas, which Moon and Mars should have to fall vacant. If in this instance, Matru and Pirtu Karakas become vacant on account of Moon and Mars sharing Sun s function, then Rahu becomes Matru Karaka, and Jupiter (the natural Lord of Children) Putra Karaka. Rahu could be a candidate for a Lordship, only when 2 or more Planets have equal Longitudes, else it is not eligible. This view is supported by Sage Parasara. Rahu can be taken as the 8 th Planet, only when 2 or more Planets have the same longitude. All Sutras to decide Raja Yogas of Sage Jaimini based on (1) Karakamsa Raasi, (2) Aarudha (3) Upapada, (4) Hora and (5) Saughatika Lagna. This chapter explains the method of determining the above Lagnas, the usage and their application. 255

6 Jataka Mani Manjusha Karakas accoording to Jaimini School vary with regard to each horoscope. This feature is of great siginificance. Any Planet can acquire any Karakatwa or Lordship, as the basis for determining the Karaka is mrerely the Longitude of a Planet reckoned from the beginning of the Sign concerned. There 7 main Karakas, namely (1) Atma, (2) Amatya, (3) Bhratru, (4), Matru, (5) Putra, (6) Gnati, and (7) Dara Karakas Atma Karaka The Planet having highest Longitude in a Sign becomes the Atma Karaka. The position of Atma Karaka is very important and the strength or weakness of the Atma Karaka will reflect the general strength or weakness of the entire horoscope. It is the prime Lord or indicator. But, the natural Atma Karaka is the Sun Amatya Karaka The next in the importance is the Amtya Karaka. Devoid of Signs, the planet which has the next greater number of degrees is the Amatya Karaka or the Sub-Lord. This Bhava refers to finance or dhana. There is no natural or permanent Amatya Karaka, but Mercury is assumed to be one Bhratru Karaka The Planet whose Longitide is next to that of the Amtya Karaka, is the Lord of Brother. All events pertaining to Brothers and Sisters to be read from Bhratru Karaka. Mars is the natural Bhratru Karaka Matru Karaka The Lord of Mother is the Planet that has the next highest number of degrees in a Sign. Moon is the natural Matru Karaka Putra Karaka The Lord of Children is the Planet that has the next highest number of degrees devoid of Signs. Jupiter is the natural Putra Karaka Gnati Karaka The Lord of Gnatis (cousins and relations) is the one with Longitude less than that of Putra Karaka. Mars is the natural Gnati Karakas Dara Karaka The Lord of spouse is one whose Longitude is the least. Venus is the natural Dara Karaka. 256

7 Chapter 6: Jaimini Astrology 6.3 METHOD OF DETERMINING KARAKAS As explained in Section 6.2, any planet can acquire Karakas by Karakatwa or Lordship. This section describes the method of arriving at the same Method to Determine Karakamsa Lagna Sutra:: Athmadhikaha kaladhina bhoga sapthanaam kshalanaam vaa l Adhaswamso grahanaam ll There two methods to determine the Karakamsa Lagna. In Method 1, first, the degree of advancement (Bhagas) of all Planets is calculated in their respective Houses. Then, the Planet is identified, which is most advanced amongst all of them. The position of this Planet in the Navamsa Chart is the Karakamsa Lagna in the Rasi Chart. In Method 2, first, the number of Padas (or Nakshatra) of all Planets is determined in their respective Houses. In Table 2.2, each star (Nakshatra) is divided into 4 Padas. For each House or Sign, there 9 Padas. The position of a Planet is determined at a partuclar Pada based on Longitudes of Planets. Then, for all planets, their position is known in the house. Then, the Planet is identified, which has highest number of padas amongst all of them. The position of this Planet in the Navamsa Rasi is the Karakamsa Lagna. When the two Planets have the same advanced padas, the Planet which covered that pada earlier is considered as the most advanced Planet. If the two Planets cover that pada at the same time, then the faster of the two Planets (i.e., Seeghra graha) is taken as the most advanced Planet. Sutra:: Yavadeesa Srayam Padam Rukhaanaam Sage Jaimini took only Bhavas known as Padas. Pada means full house containing 9 Nakshatra Padas, namely: (1) Aruda pada from Janma Lagna; (2) Kosa pada from 2 nd House; (3) Bhratru pada from 3 rd House; (4) Matru pada from 4 th House; (5) Mahatma pada from 5 th House; (6) Dara pada from 7 th House; (7) Bhagya pada from 9 th House; (8) Rajya pada from 10 th House; and (9) Upapada from 12 th House. Sage Jaimini considered that Lords of 6 th, 8 th and 11 th Houses not good. Therefore, he did not give any Pada for these three Houses. 257

8 Jataka Mani Manjusha Arudha Lagna Count as many Signs from birth Lord as the Lord is away from the Ascendant. This gives Arudha Lagna or Pada Lagna. If according to this Sutra, Arudha Lagna and Janma Lagna will be the same, when Lagnadhipati is in Lagna or in the 7 th House, but it never meant that Arudha and Janma Lagnas shall not be the same. The following Sutras establishes this: Sutra 1:: Swasthidaraha According to this Sutra, if Lagnadhipati is in 7 th House is the Arudha Lagna. Sutra 2:: Suthasthe Janma According to this Sutra, if Lagnadhipati is in 7 th House, 10 th House will be Arudha Lagna. Example: Consider a person born in the year named Anadha, on Ashada Sudha 3 rd Saturday, at 32 Ghatikas, 46 Vighatikas; Ashlesha 31 Ghatikas, 39 Vighatikas; Duration of day time 32 Ghatikas, 42 Vighatikas; Pushyami (the star previous to the birth star), the previous day 32 Ghatikas, 47 Vighatikas. The person is born in Karkataka Lagna. The planetary positions at the time of birth of the person shown in the Raasi and Amsa charts presented in Figures 6.1 and 6.2 in East Indian System, and Figures 6.3 and 6.4 in South Indian System. Table 6.6 presents the postions of planets, Nakshatra Pada of the Planets, and their highest advanced Planets as per Sage Jaimini s Method 2 of identifying the Karakamsa Lagna. The nine Padas mentioned above discussed in this section. (a) Arudha Pada from Janma Lagna The Lagna is Cancer Rasi. The Lagna Lord is Moon, which is situated only there. Hence, Arudha Pada is positioned in opposite 7 th House as per Sutra 1 above. (b) Kosa Pada from 2 nd House The second House from Lagna is Leo Rasi. The Lord of Leo is Sun. From this house of Leo, Sun is siutated at 11 th House in Gemini. From Gemini, the 11 th House is Aries. Hence, Kosa Pada is Aries Rasi. (c) Bhatru Pada from 3 rd House The third House from Lagna is Virgo Rasi. The Lord of Virgo is Mercury. Mercury is in at the 11 th House (Lagna) from Virgo. Hence, 11 th House from Lagna is the 11 th House, which is Taurus. Hence, Bhratru Pada is Taurus Rasi. (d) Matru Pada from 4 th House The fourth House from Lagna is Libra Rasi. The Lord of Libra is Venus. Venus is at the 10 th House (Cancer) from 4 th House. Hence, 10 th House from Cancer is Aries. Hence, Matru Pada is Aries Rasi. (e) Mahatma Pada from 5 th House The fifth House from Cancer Lagna is Scorpio Rasi. The Lord of Scorpio is Mars. Mars is at the 10 th House from 5 th House. Hence, 10 th House from Leo is Taurus. Hence, Mahatma Pada is Taurus Rasi. (f) Dara Pada from 7 th House The seventh House from Cancer Lagna is Capricorn Rasi. The Lord of Capricorn is Saturn. Saturn is at the 6 th House from Saturn, which is Gemini. Hence, 10 th House from Gemini is Scorpio. Hence, Dara Pada is Scorpio Rasi. (g) Bhagya Pada from 9 th House The ninth House from Cancer Lagna is Pisces Rasi. The Lord of Pisces is Jupiter. Jupiter is at the 11 th House from Pisces, which is Scorpio. Hence, 9 th House from Capricorn is Scorpio. Hence, Bhagya Pada is Scorpio Rasi. (h) Rajya Pada from 10 th House The tenth House from Cancer Lagna is Aries Rasi. The Lord of Aries is Mars. Mars is at the 5 th House from Aries, which is Leo. Hence, 5 th House from Leo is Sagittarius. Hence, Rajya Pada is Sagittarius Rasi. 259

10 Jataka Mani Manjusha Table 6.6 indicates that Jupiter has advanced 9 padas, which is the highest amongst all Planets. Jupiter is in Virgo Ascendant in the Navamsa chart (Figure 6.4), therefore Virgo Ascendant is the Karakamsa Lagna. Arudha Lagna and other Padas also shown in the Raasi chart (Figure 6.3) along with their positions of the various Planets on that day. Upapada also is shown in the Raasi chart in Leo Ascendant. This is calculated from the Lord of 12 th House from Lagna. In this example, the 12 th House is in Gemini Ascendant; its Lord is Mercury. Mercury is in 2 nd House in Cancer Ascendant from Gemini. Hence, the 2 nd House from Mercury is Leo Ascedant, which is the Upapda. 260

14 Jataka Mani Manjusha Hora Lagna When the person is born in the day time, the Hora Lagna is determined as described below: Step 1: The duration of the day of the person s birth should be obtained according to the Almanac, and divided into 12 parts (Rasis). Step 2: The number of Ghatikas and Vighatikas for each Raasi obtained. The number of Rasis covered by Ghatikas and Vighatikas calculated at the time of birth from sunrise. The number of Rasis counted from sunrise of the day to the time of birth; this determines the Rasi, and called Hora Lagna. A similar procedure is followed, if the birth takes place during night. The order of counting is clockwise, if Janma Lagna is an odd number, and anti-clockwise, if Janma Lagna is an even number. Example: Consider a person born in the day in Cancer Rasi. The associated calculations shown below: Ghatikas Vighatikas (1) Time of birth from sunrise 3 30 (2) Total duration of day time (3) Divide the day time equally into 12 Rasis 2 43 (4) Hence, birth time falls in 2 Rasi The birth time falls in 2 nd Rasi from sunrise. The person is born in Cancer Rasi; this is an even Rasi. Therefore, counting of the Lagna should be in the anti-clockwise direction. As per this, Gemini becomes the Hora which is 2 nd House form Cancer. Refer to the Rasi chart (Figure 6.3) given in an earlier example. Sages assigned Raja Yogas for this Hora Lagna also. Sage Jaimini called Naturally Good Planets as Subhas, and Naturally Bad Planets as Papis Ghatika Lagna Example [Raman, 1986]: Two methods given to ascertain Ghatika Lagna. Method A: Mathematically, each Ghati is equivalent to 30. Hence, Ghatika Lagna can be obtained by multiplying birth ghatis from sunrise by 30 and adding the product to the Longitude of Lagna. For instance, in the standard Horoscope, the Ghatika Lagna according to strict mathematical rules would be: = 28 9 Cancer The procedure requires adding Birth Ghatis 30 to the first point of i.e., = = This gives ghatikas as = 15 0 of Cancer This gives Ghatika Lagna as 15 of Cancer Raasi. 264

The quoteient is rejected, and the intergral part of the remainder is taken, say n. One is added to n. From Janma (n+1) th House gives the Ghatika Lagna. The fractional part of the remainder reduced to degree gives the exact Longitude. Example: Consider a person born in the day in Taurus Rasi. The following calculation is made as per Method B. (1) Time of birth from sunrise 14.5 Ghatikas (2) Divide by /12 = 1 Quotient, 2.5 Remainder (3) Integral part of Remainder 2 = n (4) Fractional part of Remainder = 15 (5) Ghatika lagna n + 1 = = 3 Thus, the third House from Janma Lagna (Taurus) is Cancer Lagna Karakamsa Lagna As mentioned earlier, Atma Karaka is the planet with highest Longitude (largest number of degrees) in a Sign. Karakamsa is the Navamsa occupied by Atma Karaka in the Navamsa Chart. The Sign in which the Atma Karaka is situated in Navamsa Chart, is the Karakamsa Lagna position in the Rasi Chart Upapada Lagna As mentioned earlier, Upapada Lagna (or Upapada in brief) is the 12 th House from Janma Lagna. Whichever house the Lord of 12 th House occupies from the 12 th House, the same number of Rasis from his position is Upapada. 265

16 Jataka Mani Manjusha 6.4 SUTRAS The Jaimini School of Astrology is discussed in the Sutras presented in this Section. The entire science is studied according to symbols discussed in the Sutra: Sarwathra savarna bhava raasayescha According to above sutra of Sage Jaimni, Rasis should be interpreted symbolically with letter sequence starting from Ka, Ta, Pa and Ya, as listed in Table 6.7. In applying the symbols, the digits have to be reversed as presented below. For instance, in the word Simha, Sa stands for 7 and Ha stands for 8. Thus, to represent Simha, instead of the number 78, it should be reversed as 87. This number should be divided by 12, and the balance is 3. This indicates the 3 rd House. So, Simha always indicates 3. Similarly, the controlling Houses ascertained for other items. This should be applied only to Rasis and not to Planets, according to the writing of Jaimini, namely Nagrahaha [Rao, 1993]. When they reversed, it is 28. When this is divided by 12, the balance is 4. Therefore, Dara signifies 4. Similarly, the governing Houses can be worked out for Bhagya and Saara; they 2 and 11. Naturally Good Planets in the 4 th, 2 nd and 11 th from Karaka Lagna give very good Dhana Yoga; this applies to Janma Langa also. If Pisces is Janma Lagna and Naturally Good Planets (i.e., Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus) in 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th Houses, these Planets give very good Raja Yoga in their own periods. If the Naturally Good Planets equally distributed among the three Houses, Yoga will be highest. This will apply to the Lord of the 5 th House. Jupiter and Mercury give greater Yoga in 2 nd and 11 th Houses, than in 4 th House, because Jupiter and Mercury have kendradhipatya dosha, they will not give Yoga in the 4 th House (which is a Kendra). When these not equally distributed, and Jupiter and Mercury alone in the 4 th House, they will give Avayoga in their own periods. Naturally Good Planets Jupiter, Moon, Venus and Mercury. Jupiter is an outer planet. Moon is a Satellite of Earth. Venus and Mercury inner Planets between Sun and Earth. Mercury is close to Sun and Venus farther away. In most horoscopes, these two Planets : (1) In the same house Difference in Longitude is less than 30, (2) In adjacent houses 30 away, (3) In third house from each other at 60 away, or (4) In fourth house from each other at 90 away. 267

18 Jataka Mani Manjusha These 4 planets in 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th House can be equally distributed (a) In case (1) above, as both Mercury and Venus in the same house, and (b) In case (3) above, as Mercury is in 2 nd House, and Venus in the 4 th house. In cases (2) and (4) above, either Venus or Mercury is eliminated, and this Yoga cannot form. In cases (1) and (3) above, the four Planets can be distributed in 3 houses. For Pisces when Naturally Good Planets in the 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th Houses, and Venus in 4 th House, Venus gives very good Dhana Yoga in his periods and sub periods. Also, Venus is good for education, though Venus is the Lord of the 3 rd and 8 th Houses. Even if Naturally Good Planets only in the 2 nd and 4 th Houses, and the 11 th House is free from any Planet, there will be good Dhana Yoga. Items 4.3 and 4.3(a) in Sutras 4 should be read together to determine greater Raja Yoga. Rahu and Ketu generally 180 apart, i.e., 6 signs away. Hence, of the 5 Planets, only four (Saturn, Mars, Sun and Rahu; or Saturn, Mars, Sun and Ketu). Equal distribution in 3 rd and 6 th Houses means they 3 Signs away, i.e., 90 away. Hence, the 4 planets as indicated above can be equally at two places two at each place. 6 Ripha Neecha Kaamartha Virodhinaha Planets in 12 th, 10 th and 3 rd Houses anti-forces for Planets in 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th Houses, i.e., 1. Planet in 12 th House spoils Yoga due from Planets in 2 nd House. 2. Planet in 10 th House spoils Yoga due from Planets in 4 th House. 3. If Planet in 3 rd House is less advanced than Planet in 11 th House, the person will get Yoga due from both the Planets. 7 Nanyana Vivarascha When Planets in 12 th, 10 th and 3 rd Houses less powerfull, then the Planets in 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th Houses cannot spoil their Yoga. Even when they more powerful or equal in strength, they give Yoga. When the Planets in 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th more powerfull or equal in strength, they give Yoga.

20 Jataka Mani Manjusha 8 Prakvat Trikonehi Planets in 5 th House (even if weak) can give Raja Yoga, even when they have Kendradhipatya Dosha.The situation is better when the combination in 5 th House is with Moon, but the Yoga is not good for Pisces Lagna. 9 Vipetham Kethoho Ketu gives Yoga in 9 th House, unlike other Naturally Bad Planets; some astrologers suggest that Ketu will give Yoga in 5 th House, but not combined with Venus. 10 Thasyaami Sahana Damatyaha All seven Planets and one of Rahu and Ketu (i.e., a total of 8 Planets) should be listed in the order of their degrees they have advanced, beginging from the highest advanced Planet. Planet with the highest advancement is Lagna Karaka, similar to the results should be read as the Karaka Yogas. The next advanced Planet in the list, i.e., 2 nd Planet, is known as Amatya Karaka. From this, the thinking capacity of the person, can be known. 11 Thasya Bhratha 12 Thasya Matha 13 Thasya Puthraha 14 Thasya Gnathihi 15 Thasay Darasyscha The following the karakas (ruling planets): 3 rd most advanced Planet is Bhratru Karaka. 4 th most advanced Planet is Matru Karaka. 5 th most advanced Planet is Putra Karaka. 6 th most advanced Planet is Gnayathi Karaka. 7 th most advanced Planet is Kalatra Karaka. Sage Jaimini also followed Sage Parasara in deciding Karakatwa, as per these Sutras. When the mother of a child is deceased or unable to give milk to the new born, then another woman in lactation is allowed to give milk to the newborn; that other woman is called Wet Nurse. Sometimes, when Wet Nurse happens to be a Visha Kanya, the milk from her will lead to danger to the newborn. 34 Same Vahanadhi duchhachya kramath pathanam If Karakamsa Raasi is Sagittarius, the person has danger from vehicles or falling trees. 272

Experience shows that both of these schools give reliable results. The person will definitely be a government officer, when Venus is in Karakamsa Lagna. 40 Dhathuvaadi kaunthyaudha vahini jeevecha bhoume If Mars is in the person will live by chemical dealings, weaponry or items relating to fire. 41 Vanijasthanthu waysa silpino vyavahara vidosch saumye If Mercury is in the person will live as a weaver, businessman or employee in business field, one with fine arts or one with worldly wisdom. 42 Karma jnana nistha veda vedascha jeeve If Jupiter is in the person will be inclined to traditions, vedic rituals, and philosophy and knowledge of Vedas and Saastras. 273

Semi-Government exployement also is considered to be government service. Some astrologers read Kaminaha as denoting passion, but experience does not seem to suggest this. Though Venus directly influences sex, this should not be attributed to Venus, when Venus is a Karakamsa Lagna. Sata does not denote exactly hundred, but many years. 44 Prasiddha karma jeeva sanow If Saturn is in the person will live with good reputation, honesty and with nobility. The other version of this Sutra is: Prasiddhaha karmana jeeveth Sanina If Saturn is in Karakamsa Lagna or Janma the person will gain great name in his family circles and lives by personal effort. These yogas particularly favourable to persons with Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius Raasees. 45 Dhanuskaaschorascha 46 Jangalika lohayanthrenascha rahow If Saturn is in the person will live by dacoity in forests. Experience suggests that this may be incorrect. But, the person will be a hunter in jungles, dishonest, deal in metals, poisonous drugs, or some antibiotics. 47 Gaja vyavahariwaschorascha Kethow If Ketu is in the person will deal with purchase and sale of Elephants, or be involved in house breaking. But, experience suggests that the person will have worldly wisdom, false and deceitful, or having fraudulent dealings. 48 Thatramanda sarpayoho tambula daayi If Saturn and Rahu in the person will engage in thambula peethika daram (courtiers); but, practice does not suggest this. By mere combination of Saturn and Rahu, the person will not resort to mean professions, but live independently. At times, the person will behave meanly (if necessary), though he may be a showman externally. 49 Chape Chandre nanikaha 50 Sukradrushte viseshena If Moon in Karakamsa Lagna and happens to be in Cancer Sign, the person will earn by maritime trade or will be a Officer of the Navy. If Moon in Karakamsa Lagna and happens to be in Cancer Sign and is aspected by Venus, the person will have higher dealings in boat trasnport. 274

Some say that this will happen when Rahu or Ketu is in 2 nd House from Sun. 52 Subha drushte than nivruthihi If Sun and Rahu aspected by a subha or combined with a Naturally Good Planet, and in Karakamsa Lagna and happens to be the Cancer Sign, the person will have no danger of life; the dosha will be neutralized and no death will take place. 53 Subhamaatra sambandha jangalikaha If Sun and Rahu in Karakamsa Lagna and aspected by a Naturally Good Planet, the person will be a forest dweller. Experience shows that the person lives by medical practice. Hence, while some read Jangalika to mean forest, but it is proper to read it as medicine. 54 Chandraketu bhya methyeka If Sun and Ketu in Karakamsa Lagna and aspected by a Naturally Good Planet, the person will be a forest dweller (as in Sutra 53). Some astrologers say that the person will live by poisonous medicines; this is seen to be accurate. 55 Kujamaatra dushte griha dahakaha agnidova If Karakamsa Lagna is aspected by Mars, the person s house will be burnt or he will burn others Houses, sometimes his own house may fall. 56 Sukradrushte ardhadahaha If Karakamsa Lagna is aspected by Venus and Mars or Venus alone, the person s house will be partly burnt. There is another version of this Sutra: Sukradrushte ardhadadaha According to this, the person s house will be half burnt. 57 Gurudrushte aasanna grihdatha Gurudrushte shasameepa grihdaaha If Karakamsa Lagna is aspected by Jupiter and Venus, the houses near the person s house will be burnt. 275

If Mercury is in the person will suffer definitely from Hydrocele. Even if the above Yoga is not present, but if Mercury is in a bad house, the person will have this trouble in the period or sub-period of Mercury. 61 Tatra Ketou papadrushte karna chedaha karna rogovaa Tatra Ketou karana chhedaha karna rogova If Ketu is in Karakamsa Lagna and is aspected by a Naturally Bad Planet, the person s ears will be cut off, or the person will suffer from ear disease.
