Energy and Momentum of the Bianchi-I Type Universes in Tele-parallel Gravity arxiv:gr-qc/ v2 16 Mar 2005 Mustafa Saltı Department of Physics, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Science, Middle East Technical University, 06531, Ankara-Turkey Ali Havare Department of Physics, Mersin University, 33343/Ciftlikkoy, Mersin-Turkey Abstract. In this paper, considering the tele-parallel gravity versions of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz energy-momentum prescriptions energy and momentum distribution of the universe based on the Bianchi-I type metrics which includes both the matter and gravitational fields is found to be zero and this results are the same as a previous works of Banerjee-Sen who investigated the same problem in general relativity by using Einstein energy-momentum complex, Xulu who used the general relativity versions of the Landau-lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg energy-momentum complexes for the Bianchi-I type space-times and Aydogdu-Saltı who obtained energy in Møller s tetrad theory of gravity for Bianchi-I type metrics. Another point is that our study agree with the previous works of Cooperstock-Israelit, Rosen, Johri et al., Saltı et al.. The result that total energy of the universe in Bianchi type I universe is supports the viewpoints of Albrow and Tryon and valid not only in the tele-parallel equivalent of general relativity, but also in any tele-parallel model. Keywords: Energy and momentum; Bianchi-I type; Tele-parallel Gravity. PACs Numbers: q; Jb; h 1. Introduction From the advent of the general theory of relativity, various methods have been proposed to deduce the conservation laws that characterize the gravitational systems. Nevertheless, recently this problem also argued in an alternative gravitation theory, namely tele-parallel gravity. Energy and momentum of the universe play an important role as they provide the first integrals of equations of motions, helping one to solve otherwise intractable problems[1]. Furthermore, the energy content in a sphere of radius R in a given space-time gives a taste of the effective gravitational mass that a test particle situated at the same distance from the gravitating object experiences. A large number
M. Saltı and A. Havare 2 of researchers have devoted considerable attention to the problem of finding the energy as well as momentum and angular momentum associated with various space-times. The first of such attempts was made by Einstein who proposed an expression for the energy-momentum distribution of the gravitational field. There have many attempts to resolve the energy-momentum problem[2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]. There exists an opinion that the energy and momentum definitions are not useful to get finite and meaningful results in a given geometry. Virbhadra and his collaborators reopened the problem of the energy and momentum by using the energy-momentum complexes. Einstein s energymomentum complex, used for calculating the energy in general relativistic system, was followed by many complexes: e.g. Tolman, Papapetrou, Bergmann-Thomson, Møller, Landau-Liftshitz, Weinberg, Qadir-Sharif and the tele-parallel gravity analogs of the Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Bergmann-Thomson and Møller s. The energy-momentum complexes give meaningful results when we transform the line element in quasi-cartesian coordinates. The energy and momentum complex of Møller gives the possibility to make the calculations in any coordinate system[11]. To this end Virbhadra and his collaborators have considered many space-time models and have shown that several energy-momentum complexes give the same and acceptable results for a given spacetime[12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17]. In Phys. Rev. D (1999), Virbhadra, using the energy and momentum complexes of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg s for a general non-static spherically symmetric metric of the Kerr-Schild class, showed that all of these energy-momentum formulations give the same energy distribution as in Penrose energy-momentum formulation. Albrow[18] and Tryon[19] suggested that in our universe, all conserved quantities have to vanish. Tryon s big bang model predicted a homogenous, isotropic and closed universe including of matter and anti-matter equally. They argue that any closed universe has zero energy. The subject of the energy-momentum distributions of the closed universes was opened by an interesting work of Cooperstock and Israelit[20]. They found the zero value energy for a closed homogenous isotropic universe described by a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) metric in the context of general relativity. This interesting result effected some general relativists, for instance: Rosen[21], Johri et al.[22], Banerjee-Sen[23], Vargas and Saltı et al.[24, 25, 26]. Johri et al. using the Landau-Liftshitz s energy-momentum complex, found that the total energy of a FRW spatially closed universe is zero at all times. Banerjee and Sen who investigated the problem of total energy of the Bianchi-I type space-times using the Einstein complex, obtained that the total energy is zero. This result agrees with the studies of Johri et al.. Because, the line element of the Bianchi-I type space-time reduces to the spatially flat FRW line element in a special case. Vargas using the definitions of Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz in tele-parallel gravity, found that the total energy is zero in FRW space-time. This results extend the works of Rosen and Johri. After Vargas s work, Saltı and Havare considered the Bergmann-Thomson complex in both general relativity and tele-parallel gravity for the Viscous Kasner-type metric and found that total energy and momentum are zero and Saltı used the definitions of Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz
M. Saltı and A. Havare 3 in tele-parallel gravity for the Viscous Kasner-type metric and obtained the same result. Finally, Aydogdu and Saltı studied the energy of the Bianchi-I type universe in Møller s tetrad theory of gravity and obtained the zero value energy. The layout of the paper is as follows. In Sec. II, we introduce the Bianchi-I type space-times. Then, in Sec. III, we give the energy-momentum definitions of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz in the tele-parallel theory of gravity. Sec. IV gives us the Bianchi-I type solutions. Finally, Sec. V is devoted to concluding remarks. Throughout this paper we choose units such that G = 1, c = 1 and follow the convention that indices take values from 0 to 3 otherwise stated. 2. The Bianchi-I Type Metric The Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model has attracted considerable attention in the relativistic cosmology literature. Maybe one of the most important properties of this model is, as predicted by inflation[27, 28, 29], the flatness, which agrees with the observed cosmic microwave background radiation. In the early universe the sorts of the matter fields are uncertain. The existence of anisotropy at early times is a very natural phenomenon to investigate, as an attempt to clarify among other things, the local anisotropies that we observe today in galaxies, clusters and super-clusters. So, at the early time, it appears appropriate to suppose a geometry that is more general than just the isotropic and homogenous Friedmann- Robertson-Walker geometry. Even though the universe, on a large scale, appears homogenous and isotropic at the present time, there are no observational data that guarantee this is an epoch prior to the recombination. The anisotropies defined above have many possible sources; they could be associated with cosmological magnetic or electric fields, long-wave length gravitational waves, Yang-Mills fields[30]. The line element of the Bianchi-I type universe[31] is given as, ds 2 = dt 2 e 2l dx 2 e 2m dy 2 e 2n dz 2 (1) where l, m and n are functions of t alone. The expansion factors e 2l, e 2m and e 2n could be determined via Einstein s field equations. The non-vanishing component of the Einstein tensor G µν ( 8πT µν, where T µν is the energy-momentum tensor) are G 00 = lṁ + ṁṅ + ṅ l (2) G 11 = e 2l (ṁ 2 + ṅ 2 + ṁṅ + m + n) (3) G 22 = e 2m (ṅ 2 + l 2 + ṅ l + n + l) (4) G 33 = e 2n ( l 2 + ṁ 2 + lṁ + l + m) (5) An anisotropic Bianchi-I type universe can be considered to be filled with an ideal(non-viscous) fluid which has an equation of state p = ρ(stiff matter-the velocity of sound coincides with the speed of light), where ρ is the energy density and p is the isotropic pressure.
M. Saltı and A. Havare 4 For the line element (1), g µν and g µν are defined by g µν = δ 0 µ δ0 ν e2l δ 1 µ δ1 ν e2m δ 2 µ δ2 ν e2n δ 3 µ δ3 ν (6) g µν = δ µ 0δ ν 0 e 2l δ µ 1δ ν 1 e 2m δ µ 2δ ν 2 e 2n δ µ 3δ ν 3 (7) The non-trivial tetrad field induces a tele-parallel structure on space-time which is directly related to the presence of the gravitational field, and the Riemannian metric arises as g µν = η ab h a µh b ν (8) Using this relation, we obtain the tetrad components: and its inverse is h a µ = δ a 0δ 0 µ + e l δ a 1δ 1 µ + e m δ a 2δ 2 µ + e n δ a 3δ 3 µ (9) h µ a = δ 0 a δµ 0 + e l δ 1 a δµ 1 + e m δ 2 a δµ 2 + e n δ 3 a δµ 3 (10) The line-element given by (1) reduces to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker line element in a special case. Defining e l = T(t) with l = m = n, and transforming the line element (1) to t, x, y, z coordinates: according to: ds 2 = dt 2 T 2 (t)[dr 2 + r 2 (dθ 2 + sin 2 θdφ 2 )] (11) x = r sin θ cosφ, y = r sin θ sin φ, z = r cos θ (12) 3. Energy and Momentum in Tele-parallel Gravity The tele-parallel gravity is an alternative approach to gravitation and corresponds to a gauge theory for the translation group based on Weitzenböck geometry[32]. In the theory of the tele-parallel gravity, gravitation is attributed to torsion[33], which plays the role of a force[34], and the curvature tensor vanishes identically. The essential field is acted by a nontrivial tetrad field, which gives rise to the metric as a by-product. The translational gauge potentials appear as the nontrivial item of the tetrad field, so induces on space-time a tele-parallel structure which is directly related to the presence of the gravitational field. The interesting place of tele-parallel gravity is that, due to its gauge structure, it can reveal a more appropriate approach to consider some specific problem. This is the situation, for example, in the energy and momentum problem, which becomes more transparent when considered from the tele-parallel point of view. The Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz s energy-momentum complexes in tele-parallel gravity[10] are respectively: hυ µ ν = 1 4π λ(u µλ ν ) (13) hυ µν = 1 4π λ(hg µβ U νλ β ) (14)
M. Saltı and A. Havare 5 where h = det(h a νλ µ ) and Uβ is the Freud s super-potential, which is given by: U νλ β Here S µνλ is the tensor = hs νλ β. (15) S µνλ = m 1 T µνλ + m 2 2 (T νµλ T λµν ) + m 3 2 (gµλ T βν β gνµ T βλ β ) (16) with m 1, m 2 and m 3 the three dimensionless coupling constants of tele-parallel gravity[33]. For the tele-parallel equivalent of general relativity the specific choice of these three constants are: m 1 = 1 4, m 2 = 1 2, m 3 = 1 (17) To calculate this tensor, firstly we must calculate Weitzenböck connection: Γ α µν = h α a ν h a µ (18) and torsion of the Weitzenböck connection: T µ νλ = Γµ λν Γµ νλ (19) The energy and momentum in tele-parallel gravity versions of the Einstein and Landau- Lifshitz complexes: P µ = hυ 0 µdxdydz (20) P µ is called the momentum four-vector, P i give momentum components P 1, P 2, P 3 and P 0 gives the energy. 4. Solutions for Bianchi-I Type Space-times Using equations (9) and (10), we find the following non-vanishing components of the Weitzenböck connection: Γ 1 10 = l, Γ 2 20 = ṁ, Γ 3 30 = ṅ (21) where a dot indicates derivative with respect to t. The corresponding non-vanishing torsion components are found T 1 01 = T 1 10 = l (22) T 2 02 = T 2 20 = ṁ (23) T 3 03 = T 3 30 = ṅ. (24) Taking these results into equation (16), the non-zero components of the tensor S νλ µ are found as: S 10 1 = S 01 1 = (m 1 + m 2 2 ) l m 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n ) (25) S 20 2 = S 02 2 = (m 1 + m 2 2 )ṁ m 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n ) (26) S 30 3 = S 03 3 = (m 1 + m 2 2 )ṅ m 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n ) (27)
M. Saltı and A. Havare 6 Now, using equation (15) the non-vanishing components of Freud s super-potential are: [ U1 10 = U1 01 = e l+m+n (m 1 + m 2 2 ) l m ] 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n ) [ U2 20 = U2 02 = e l+m+n (m 1 + m 2 2 )ṁ m ] 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n ) [ U3 30 = U3 03 = e l+m+n (m 1 + m 2 2 )ṅ m ] 3 2 ( le 2l + ṁe 2m + ṅe 2n )(28) Using both of the Einstein and Landau-Lisfhitz energy-momentum complexes, we get the results which are given below. P 0 = P i = 0 (29) 5. Discussions Using in the context of the tele-parallel theory of gravity, we have calculated energy and momentum of the universe based on the Bianchi-I type space-times. In order to compute the gravitational part of energy and momentum, we have considered the tele-parallel analogs of Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz energy-momentum definitions. Our first result is that energy-momentum vanish whatever be the pseudo-tensor used to describe the gravitational energy-momentum in the Bianchi-type metrics. It is also independent of the three tele-parallel dimensionless coupling constants, which means that it is valid not only in the tele-parallel equivalent of general relativity, but also in any tele-parallel model. The second result is that our study supports the viewpoints of Albrow and Tryon and extend the previous works of Banerjee-Sen, Xulu and Aydogdu-Saltı. The third result is that this work agree with the works of Cooperstock-Israelit, Rosen, Johri et al., Vargas and Saltı et al.. References [1] E. Namad-Achar and B.F. Schutz, Gen. Rel.
