Life-San of Solutions to Critical Semilinear Wave Equations Yi Zhou Wei Han. Abstract arxiv: v1 [math.ap] 19 Mar 11 The final oen art of the famous Strauss conjecture on semilinear wave equations of the form u = u, i.e., blow-u theorem for the critical case in high dimensions was solved by Yordanov and Zhang [1], or Zhou [5] indeendently. But the estimate for the lifesan, the maximal existence time, of solutions was not clarified in both aers. Recently, Takamura and Wakasa[18] have obtained the shar uer bound of the lifesan of the solution to the critical semilinear wave equations, and their method is based on the method in Yordanov and Zhang [1]. In this aer, we give a much simle roof of the result of Takamura and Wakasa [18] by using the method in Y. Zhou [5] for sace dimensions n. Simultaneously, this estimate of the life san also roves the last oen otimality roblem of the general theory for fully nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case n = 4 and quadratic nonlinearity(one can see Li and Chen[7] for references on the whole history). Keywords: Semilinear wave equation; Critical exonent; Cauchy roblem; Blow u; Lifesan 1 Introduction and Main Results In this aer, we will consider the blow u of solutions of the Cauchy roblems for the following semilinear wave equations: where { u = u, (x,t) R n (,+ ), n, t = : u = εf(x), u t = εg(x), x R n, = t is the wave oerator. and the initial values f,g C (Rn ) satisfy (1.1) n x i (1.) i=1 su(f, g) {x x 1}, (1.3) School of Mathematical Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai 433, P. 2 ε > is a small arameter, we assume that n, and = (n) is the ositive root of the quadratic equation (n 1) (n+1) =. The number (n) is known as the critical exonent of roblem (1.1). Since it divides (1,+ ) into two subintervals so that the following take lace: If (1, c (n)], then (1.1) has no global solution for nonnegative initial values; if ( c (n),+ ), then solutions with small( and sufficiently regular ) initial values exist for all time ( see for e.g. [15] [1] and [18]), this is the famous Strauss conjecture, we only give a brief summary here and refer the reader to [4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 17, ]. The case n = 3 was first done by F. John [5] in 1979, he showed that when n = 3 global solutions always exist if > (3) = 1+ and initial data are suitably small, and moreover, the global solutions do not exist if 1 < < (3) = 1+ for any nontrivial choice of f and g. The number (3) = 1+ aears to have first arisen in Strauss work on low energy scattering for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation [14]. This led him to conjecture that when n global solutions of (1.1) should always exist if initial data are sufficiently small and is greater than a critical ower (n). The conjecture was verified when n = by R. T. Glassey [3]. In higher sace dimensions, the case n = 4 was roved by Y. Zhou [4] and Lindblad and Sogge [1] roved the case 3 n 8. Later V. Georgiev, H. Lindblad and C. Sogge [1] showed that when n 4 and (n) < n+3 n 1, (1.1) has global solutions for small initial values (see also [1] and [19]). Later, a simle roof was given by Tataru [19] in the case > (n) and n 4. R. T. Glassey [] and T. C. Sideris [13] showed the blow-u result of 1 < < (n) for n = and all n 4, resectively. On the other hand, for the critical case = (n), it was shown by Schaeffer [1] that the critical ower also belongs to the blowu case for small data when n =,3 (see also [16,, 3]). When n 4, the blow-u roblem for the critical wave equations roblem was solved by Yordanov and Zhang [1] and Zhou [5] by different methods resectively. But the shar estimate for the lifesan, the maximal existence time, of solutions was not clarified in both aers. Recently, Takamura and Wakasa [18] have obtained the shar uer bound T(ε) ex(bε ( 1) ) of the lifesan of the solution to the critical semilinear wave equations for n 4, and method is based on the method in Yordanov and Zhang [1]. For the shar uer bound in the low dimensional csae, n = was obtained by Zhou [3] and n = 3 was obtained by Zhou [] much earlier, and Takamura [16] gave an another uniform roof for the case n =,3. In this aer, we give a much simle roof of their result based on the method in Y. Zhou [5] for sace dimensions n. Simultaneously, the lifesan T(ε) of solutions of u = u in R 4 [, ) with the initial data u(,x) = εf(x), u t (,x) = εg(x) of a small arameter ε >, comactly suorted smooth functions f and g, has an uer bound estimate T(ε) ex(bε ) with a ositive constant B indeendent of ε, which belongs to the same kind of the lower bound of the lifesan. This uer bound roves the last oen sharness roblem on the lower bound for the lifesan of solutions to fully nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case of n = 4 and quadratic nonlinearity(one can see Li Ta-Tsien and Chen Yunmei [7] for references on the whole history).
We define life san T(ε) of the solutions of (1.1) to be the largest value such that solutions exist for x R n, t < T(ε). For roblem (1.1), we consider comactly suorted nonnegative data (f,g) C (Rn ), n and satisfy f(x), g(x), x R n, and g(x). (1.4) We establish the following theorem for (1.1): Theorem 1.1. For Cauchy roblem (1.1), let initial values f and g satisfies (1.3) and (1.4), sace dimensions n, = (n), suose that Cauchy roblem (1.1) has a solution satisfying that u C([,T), H 1 (R n )) C 1 ([,T), L (R n )) C([,T), L (R n )), (1.5) suu {(x,t) x t+1}. (1.6) Then lifesan T <, and there exists a ositive constant B which is indeendent of ε such that T(ε) ex(bε ( 1) ). (1.7) Esecially, when n = 4, = (4) =, corresonding to the case of n = 4 and quadratic nonlinearity(see Li Ta-Tsien and Chen Yunmei [7]), so we rove that T(ε) ex(bε ). The rest of the aer is arranged as follows. We state several reliminary roositions in Section, Section 3 is devoted to the roof of our Theorem 1.1. Preliminaries In this section, we consider Cauchy roblem (1.1), where the initial data satisfy (1.3), and we consider the case n, = c (n). To rove the main results in this aer, we will emloy some imortant lemmas, Lemma.1. Suose that K(t) and h(t) are all ositive C functions and satisfies a(t)k (t)+k (t) b(t)k 1+α (t), t, (.1) a(t)h (t)+h (t) b(t)h 1+α (t), t, (.) where α, and If Then we have which imly a(t), b(t) >, t. (.3) K() > h(), K () h (). (.4) K (t) > h (t), t >, (.5) K(t) > h(t), t. (.6) 3
Proof. Without loss of generality, we can assume that K () > h (). Otherwise, if K () = h (), then we can obtain from (.1) and (.), K () > h (), so there exists a ositive constant δ such that so we only need to take δ as the initial time. K (t) > h (t), < t δ, By the continuity, assume (.5) is not true, then there exists a ositive constant t >, such that K (t) > h (t), t < t, So we obtain that K (t ) = h (t ). K (t ) h (t ). On the other hand, by (.4), we have K(t ) > h(t ), so by (.1) and (.), we can get K (t ) > h (t ). This is a contradiction, so (.5) holds, furthermore, (.6) also holds. Lemma.. Suose that Cauchy roblem (1.1) has a solution u, such that u C([,T), H 1 (R n )) C 1 ([,T), L (R n )) C([,T), L (R n )), (.7) If the initial data satisfies that suu {(x,t) x t+1}. (.8) R n φ 1 (x)f(x)dx, and they are not identically zero. where φ 1 (x) is defined as φ 1 (x) = e x ω dω. S n 1 Then we have R n u(t,x) dx C 1 ε (1+t) n 1 R n φ 1 (x)g(x)dx, (.9) n 1, t 1. Proof. This is exactly (.5 ) in Yordanov and Zhang[1], see also []. 4
For the convenience of describing the following lemma, let us introduce a secial function, we seek a solution of the linear wave equation on the domain x t, t of the following form φ = φ q = (t+ x ) q h φ = (.1) ( ) x, (.11) t+ x where q >, we substituting (.11) in (.1), by easy comutation one obtain that h = h q satisfies the ordinary differential equation [ z(1 z)h (z)+ n 1 ( q + n+1 ) ] z where n stands for the sace dimensions. Therefore, we can take h (z) n 1 qh(z) =, (.1) h q (z) = F(q, n 1,n 1,z), (.13) where F is the hyergeometric function defined by (α) k (β) k F(α,β,γ,z) = z k, z < 1, k!(γ) k k= with (λ) = 1, (λ) k = λ(λ+1) (λ+k 1),k 1. For γ > β >, we have the formula Thus So we have Moreover, when F(α,β,γ,z) = Γ(γ) Γ(β)Γ(γ β) h q (z) = Γ(n 1) Γ ( n 1 ) h(z) is continuous at z = 1. Thus where C is a ositive constant. When 1 1 t β 1 (1 t) γ β 1 (1 zt) α dt, z < 1. t n 3 (1 t) n 3 (1 zt) q dt. (.14) h(z) >, z < 1. (.15) < q < n 1, (.16) C 1 h(z) C, z 1, (.17) q > n 1, h(z) behaves like (1 z) (q n 1 ) when z is close to z = 1. Thus C 1 (1 z)n 1 q h(z) C (1 z) n 1 q, (.18) for some ositive constant C. Furthermore, One can easily verify Based on these facts, we have the following t φ q (t,x) = qφ q+1 (t,x). (.19) 5
Lemma.3. Consider Cauchy roblem (1.1), where initial data satisfies (1.3) and (1.4), sace dimensions n, = (n), and its solution u also satisfies (1.6). Let G(t) = t where q = n 1 1, Φ q(τ,x) = φ q (τ +,x). Then we have (t τ)(1+τ) Φ q (τ,x) u(τ,x) dxdτ, (.) R n ( t G (t) > K (ln(+t)) ( 1) (+t) (+τ) G(τ)dτ) 3, t 1, (.1) where K is a constant which is indeendent of ε. Proof. By a simle calculation, we obtain t G (t) = (1+τ) Φ q (τ,x) u(τ,x) dxdτ, (.) R n G (t) = (1+t) Φ q (t,x) u(t,x) dx, (.3) R n multilying the equation (1.1) by Φ q (t,x), q = n 1 1, and using integration by arts, we have Φ q (u tt u)dx = Φ q u dx, since Φ q udx = Φ q udx = Φ qtt udx, so we have Φ q (u tt u)dx = (Φ q u tt Φ qtt u)dx = d dt (Φ q u t Φ qt u)dx, and by (.19), we have (Φ q u t Φ qt u)dx = d dt Φ q udx Φ qt udx = d dt Φ q udx+q Φ q+1 udx, therefore we have d dt Φ q udx+q d dt Φ q+1 udx = Φ q u dx, Integrating the above exression three times about t from to t, we obtain t = 1 R n Φ q udxdτ +q t t (t τ) R n Φ q u dxdτ +εt (t τ) Φ q+1 udxdτ R n Rn Φ q (,x)f(x)dx+ εt Based on the ositivity of the Φ q and the initial values, we have t R n Φ q udxdτ +q t (t τ) Φ q+1 udxdτ > 1 R n 6 t R n (Φ q (,x)g(x) +qφ q+1 (,x)f(x))dx. (t τ) R n Φ q u dxdτ, (.4)
by using the finite roagation seed of waves (.8), Hölder s inequality, and noting (.), we have t R n Φ q udxdτ ( G (t) )1 ( t x τ+1 ) 1 Φ q (1+τ) dxdτ, where = 1. Since < q < n 1, so we have Φ q (1+τ) q, therefore, we have t x τ+1 Φ q (1+τ) dxdτ c since = (n), q = n 1 1, so we have Thus we obtain, when t, t n q t = 1+. (1+τ) q+n dτ, R n Φ q udxdτ C ( G (t) )1 (1+t) + 1 = C ( G (t) )1 (1+t) 1+ 1, (.5) in same way, because q +1 > n 1, so we have Φ q+1 (+τ) n 1 (+τ x ) (q+1 n 1 ). So by Hölder s inequality, we can get t (t τ) Φ q+1 udxdτ ( ( t ( ) ) 1 G (t) )1 Φq+1 (t τ) Φ q (1+τ) dxdτ, R n x τ+1 Φ q and we know that ( ) Φq+1 Φ q (1+τ) dx C(1+τ) n 1+q( 1) n 1 Φ q x τ+1 we can easily verify that so we have t (q +1 n 1 ) = 1, n 1+q( 1) n 1 =, 1+t (+t r) (q+1 n 1 ) dr, (t τ) Φ q+1 udxdτ C ( G (t) )1 (1+t) 1+ (ln(+t)) 1. (.6) R n Since when t 1, ln(+t) > 1. and by (.4), (.5) and (.6), and using the exression (.3) of G (t), we get ( t G (t) )1 (ln(+t)) 1 (1+t) 1+ 1 C (t τ) (1+τ) 1 G (τ)dτ, and we use integration by arts twice, we can get t (t τ) (1+τ) 1 G (τ)dτ = t τ [ (t τ) (1+τ) 1] G(τ)dτ, 7
by simle calculation, we have So we have τ [ (t τ) (1+τ) 1] = (1+τ) 3 (t+1). ( t G (t) )1 (ln(+t)) 1 (1+t) 1+ 1 C(t+1) (1+τ) 3 G(τ)dτ, t 1. This imly that ( t G (t) C(ln(+t)) ( 1) (1+t) (1+τ) G(τ)dτ) 3, t 1. Thus the roof of Lemma.3 is comlete. 3 The roof of Theorem 1.1 By Lemma.3, we can get (.1). Let then therefore we have H(t) = t (+τ) 3 G(τ)dτ, (3.1) H (t) = (+t) 3 G(t), (3.) G(t) = (+t) 3 H (t). (3.3) So by (.1), we obtain ( (+t) 3 H (t) ) > K (ln(+t)) ( 1) (+t)h (t). (3.4) By Lemma., and Φ q (1+τ) q, we can obtain t G(t) = (t τ)(1+τ) Φ q (τ,x) u(τ,x) dxdτ R n c t cε t and since = (n), we can easily check that so we have (t τ)(1+τ) 1 q R n u(τ,x) dxdτ (t τ)(1+τ) 1 q+n 1 n 1 dτ, 1 q +n 1 n 1 =, G(t) Cε t. (3.5) Therefore t H(t) cε (+τ) 3 τ dτ c ε ln(+t), t, (3.6) 8
and H (t) cε (+t) 3 t c ε (+t) 1, t. (3.7) We oen the exression (3.4), we can get (+t) H (t)+3(+t)h (t) > K (ln(+t)) ( 1) H (t). Let us make a transformation t + = ex(τ), and define H (τ) = H(ex(τ) ) = H(t), one has By (3.4), we have H (τ) = H (t) dt dτ = (t+)h (t), H (τ) = ( (t+)h (t) ) (t+) = (t+) H (t)+(t+)h (t). H (τ)+h (τ) > K τ ( 1) H (τ), Let H (τ) C ε τ, H (τ) C ε. H 1 (s) = ε H (ε ( 1) s). Then we have ε ( 1) H 1 (s)+h 1 (s) > K s ( 1) H 1 (s), H 1 (s) C s, H 1 (s) C. satisfies We take s, δ indeendent of ε, and K,C s 1 δ. Let H (s) = sh 3 (s), and H 3 (s) Then we have so we have H 3 +1 (s) = δh3 (s), s s, H 3 (s ) = C /4. H (s) = H 3 (s)+sh 3(s) = H 3 (s)+δsh +1 ( +1 H +1 (s) = δh3 (s)+δ s ε ( 1) H (s)+h (s) = ε ( 1) ( +1 ) 3 (s), ) H 3 (s), (3.8) δ s ( 1) H +δε( 1) H δsh H 3. By (3.8), we have H 3 C /4, 1 8 K s ( 1) H = 1 8 K sh K s ( C 4 ) 1 H 3. 9
As long as s sufficiently large, we have 1 ( ) 1 8 K C s > 1, so we have 4 H 3 < 1 8 K s ( 1) H, in the same way, as long as δ is sufficiently small, ε 1, we have δε ( 1) H δsh K sh 3 = 1 8 K s 1 H = 1 8 K s ( 1) H (s). Similarly, when ε 1, and δ is sufficiently small, we have so we have ( ) +1 ε ( 1) δ < 1 8 K, ε ( 1) H (s)+h (s) < 1 K s ( 1) H (s) < K s ( 1) H (s), and as long as δ is sufficiently small, we have H (s ) = C s /4, H (s ) = C 4 +δs ( C 4 )+1 < C. So we obtain that H (s) satisfies that ε ( 1) H (s)+h (s) < K s ( 1) H (s), H (s ) = C s /4, H (s ) < C. So by Lemma.1, we have H 1 (s) > H (s), s s, and since H (s) = sh 3 (s), and H 3 (s) satisfies the Ricatti equation, so there exists a ositive constant s 1 which is indeendent of ε, such that H 3 blows u at time s 1, so H is infinity at s 1, therefore H 1 definitely blow u before the time s 1. By the construction of H 1, we know that H must blow u before the time ε ( 1) s 1, still by the construction of H, we know that H(t) and then the solution u of (1.1) must blow u before the time ex(ε ( 1) s 1 ). Thus we rove the uer bound of the lifesan in the theorem. The roof of Theorem 1.1 is comlete. Acknowledgments. The first author would like to thank Professor B. Yordanov for helful discussions.
