1 Negative Idex Les Aberratios D. Schurig ad D.R. Smith Physics Departmet, Uiversity of Califoria, Sa Diego, La Jolla, CA, 9293 (Dated: July 2, 28) arxiv:physics/4347v [physics.optics] 3 Mar 24 We examie the Seidel aberratios of thi spherical leses composed of media with refractive idex ot restricted to be positive. We fid that cosideratio of this expaded parameter space allows reductio or elimiatio of more aberratios tha is possible with oly positive idex media. I particular we fid that spherical leses possessig real aplaatic focal poits are possible oly with egative idex. We perform ray tracig, usig custom code that relies oly o Maxwell s equatios ad coservatio of eergy, that cofirms the results of the aberratio calculatios. I 968, V. G. Veselago proposed the idea that a material could have a egative idex of refractio, ad described how this would impact may basic electromagetic pheomea[]. I recet years, there has bee great iterest i this subject due to experimetal demostratios of egative idex artificial materials[2], ad the itroductio of the perfect les cocept[3]. A perfect les is a flat slab of idex mius oe, which ca focus images with resolutio exceedig that possible with positive idex optics. Recetly, focusig by a egative idex medium with curved surfaces has bee experimetally demostrated[4]. Traditioal spherical profile leses composed of egative idex media have several advatages over their positive idex couterparts: they are more compact, they ca be perfectly matched to free space, ad here we demostrate that they ca also have superior focusig performace. The moochromatic imagig quality of a les ca be characterized by the five Seidel aberratios: spherical, coma, astigmatism, field curvature ad distortio. These well kow correctios to the simple Gaussia optical formulas are calculated from a fourth order expasio of the deviatio of a wave frot from spherical. (A spherical wave frot coverges to a ideal poit focus i ray optics). The coefficiets i this expasio quatify the o-ideal focusig properties of a optical elemet for a give object ad image positio[5]. We fid that there is a asymmetry of several of the Seidel aberratios with respect to idex about zero. Cosiderig that a iterface with a relative idex of + is iert ad oe of relative idex - is strogly refractive, this asymmetry is ot surprisig. However, our coclusio that the asymmetry ca yield superior focusig properties for egative idex leses is ot obvious. We ote that egative idex media are ecessarily frequecy dispersive, which implies icreased chromatic aberratio ad reduced badwidth. However, diffractive optics, which possess a similar limitatio, have foud utility i arrow bad applicatios[6]. To cofirm the aalytical aberratio results, we developed custom ray tracig code that does ot rely o the sig of the idex to determie the path of the ray, but relies oly o the permittivity, ε, the permeability, µ, Maxwell s equatios ad coservatio of eergy. Betwee iterfaces, i homogeous media, the ray propagates i a straight lie followig the directio of the Poytig vector. Refractio across a iterface, from a regio labeled ito a regio labeled 2, is hadled as follows. Wave solutios are sought that satisfy the dispersio relatio (obtaied from Maxwell s equatios) i regio 2, c 2 ω 2k 2 k 2 = ε 2 µ 2, () where k 2 is the wave vector i regio 2. The solutios must also satisfy a boudary match to the icidet wave, requirig (k 2 k ) =, (2) whereistheuitormaltotheiterface. Theoutgoig, refracted, wave must carry eergy away from the surface if the icidet wave carried eergy i, (P 2 )(P ) >, (3) where P = 2 Re(E H ) is the time averaged Poytig vector. Fially, the wave must ot be expoetially growig or decayig, Im(k 2 ) =, sice the media are assumed passive ad lossless. If a solutio exists that satisfies all the above criteria, the ray is cotiued with the ew foud wave vector ad Poytig vector. Furthermore, sice we cosider oly isotropic media the solutio will be uique. We fid that the form of the expressios for the Seidel aberratios of thi spherical leses foud i the optics literature are uchaged by the cosideratio of egative idex media. We reached this coclusio by re-derivig these expressios, from first priciples, usig oly the defiitio of optical path legth ad Fermat s Priciple. We iterpret the optical path legth, OPL = C (s)ds, to be the phase chage (i uits of free space wavelegth) that a wave would udergo alog the path C, if C is orieted parallel to the Poytig vector. The optical path may have cotributios that are egative where the Poytig vector ad the wave vector are atiparallel, i.e. where the idex is egative. These aberratio formulae are further corroborated by agreemet with the results of our ray tracig. The wave aberratio, OPL, is the differece i optical path legth of a geeral ray ad a referece ray,
2 2 AS r geeral ray referece ray optic axis FIG. : Costructio used for aberratio calculatio. The aperture stop, labeled AS is at the plae of the thi les (though les show is thick). The Gaussia image plae is labeled IP. The aperture stop coordiate vector, r, ad the image plae coordiate vector, h, are ot ecessarily parallel as show. h IP les imagig equatio, S S = ( f = ( ) R R 2 ), (7) where S is the object positio ad R ad R 2 are the les radii of curvature, the positio factor is directly related to the magificatio, The shape factor is give by M = S S = p+ p. (8) where the referece ray passes through the optic axis i the aperture stop ad the geeral ray is parameterized by its coordiate i the aperture stop, r, ad its coordiate i the image plae, h (Fig. ). To be i the Gaussia optic limit, where spherical iterfaces yield perfect imagig, r ad h must be ear zero. A series expasio of the wave aberratio i these parameters OPL = l,m,= C lm (r r) l (r h) m (h h) (4) yields correctios to Gaussia optics of ay desired order. The lowest order correctios for a thi spherical les with aperture stop i the plae of the les are give by C 2 = 32f 3 ( ) 2 [ 3 +( ) 2 (3+2)p 2 +4(+)pq +(+2)q 2], (5a) p C = 8f 3 ( ) [(2+)( )p+(+)q], C 2 = ( p)2 8f 3, C = ( p)2 6f 3 (+), C =. (5b) (5c) (5d) (5e) These coefficiets are the Seidel aberratios: spherical, coma, astigmatism, field curvature ad distortio respectively. Also appearig i these expressios are p, the positio factor, ad q, the shape factor, where we follow the defiitios of Mahaja[5]. The positio factor is give by p 2f S, (6) q R 2 +R R 2 R (9) A les with a shape factor of is symmetric, ad ± is a plao-curved les. Usig the shape ad positio factor, all thi spherical les cofiguratios are described. We will first examie the very importat case of a source object at ifiite distace. This is a positio factor of. We are left with two parameters that ca be usedto reduceaberratios, ad q. We will setthe value of q to elimiate oe of the aberratios ad compare the remaiig aberratios as a fuctio of idex. We will restrict our attetio to moderate values of idex. At large absolute values of idex, the aberratios approach the same value idepedet of sig, but dielectric leses with high idex have sigificat reflectio coefficiets due to the impedace mismatch to free space. The usual orderig of the aberratios is from highest to lowest i the order of r, the aperture coordiate. This is the orderig of most image degradatio to least if oe is formig images with sigificat les aperture, but small to moderate image size, which is a commo occurrece i applicatios. Thus, spherical aberratio is a obvious target for elimiatio. However, there are o roots of C 2 for values of idex greater tha oe, which is why this aberratio is referred to as spherical aberratio, sice it appears to be iheret to spherical leses. The usual practiceis to elimiate coma(the ext i lie), ad it so happes that the resultig les has a value for the spherical aberratio that is very ear the miimum obtaiable. Adjustig the shape factor, q, is ofte called les bedig. If we bed the les for zero coma, that is fid the roots of C with respect to q we obtai q c = (2+)( ). () + We plug this value for q ad p = ito (5) ad plot the remaiig three o-zero aberratio coefficiets as well as q c i Fig. 2. We ote that there are two values of idex where q =, which represet a plao-cocave/covex les. Settig () equal to oe we obtai, 2 =. () where f is the focal legth referred to the image side ad S is the image positio. Through the thi spherical the roots of which are the ubiquitous golde ratios, = φ.62 ad = φ.62[7]. We also ote

I meridioal profile, les priciple plaes are show as thi black vertical lies, ad optic axis ad Gaussia image plae are show as blue lies. I spot diagram, Gaussia focus is at the ceter of blue cross hairs. that there is a widow of idex values ear =.7 where both the spherical aberratio ad field curvature are small. There is o equivalet widow i positive idex. Several ray tracig diagrams with both meridioal rays ad ray spot diagrams are show for specific values of idex i Fig. 2. The referece les has idex φ, which is close to typical values used i visible optical leses ad ear eough to = for reasoably low reflectio. The leses of egative idex show are i fact closer to =, which is the other idex which permits perfect trasmissio, so this is a fair compariso. The egative idex leses all show sigificatly tighter foci tha the positive idex les. FIG. 3: All as i Fig. 2, except the followig. Les is bet for zero spherial aberratio. Coma is show red. Solid ad dashed lies idicate differet solutios. Spot size, r rms, is relative to bottom les spot i Fig. 2. All spot diagrams are at the same scale. If we attempt to bed a les with p = to obtai zero spherical aberratio we obtai the two solutios q s = 2( 2 ) ± 4. (2) +2 Theseexpressioshaverealvaluesolyfor /4,soa implemetatio of such a les (embedded i free space) is ot possible with ormal materials. It is a surprisig ad sigificat result that egative idex permits a etire family of spherical aberratio free spherical leses that ca focus a distat object to a real focus, Fig. 3. The solutio with the egative sig i the expressio for q s (solid curves) has less coma for moderate egative values of idex, so ray tracig diagrams are show for that solutio. We ote that at =, the field curvature is also zero, thus this les has oly two of the five Seidel aberratios, coma ad astigmatism. For a positive idex referece we use the zero coma, = φ les from above. Here agai, egative idex leses achieve a tighter focus

Les cofiguratio with object ad image at fiite positios ad bet for zero spherial aberratio ad coma. Positio factor is show dark gray. Real image object pairs oly occur whe positio factor is i shaded regio, p <. Les pairs are f/.23, f/.8, f/.9 ad have magificatios -,-2,-3. I secod to last spot diagram, horizotal (x) ad vertical (x) zoom are ot equal. tha a comparable positive idex les. Now we examie the case of p <, that is a real object ad real image both at fiite positio. Sice p ad q are both free parameters, we ca coceivably elimiate two aberratios. If we elimiate spherical aberratio ad coma the resultig les is called aplaatic. It is a well kow, though icorrect, result that a spherical les ca ca oly have virtual aplaatic focal pairs. The correct statemet is that oly egative idex spherical leses ca have real aplaatic focal pairs. If we set C 2 ad C to zero ad solve for p ad q, we obtai four solutios, the two o-trivial oes are p, q give by p sc = +, q sc = ±(2+). (3a) (3b) We will focus o the solutio with a mius sig for p ad the plus sig for q. This solutio has smaller aberratios for les cofiguratios that magify a image. The other solutio is better for image reductio. Isertig the expressios (3) ito (5) we have plotted the two remaiig o-zero coefficiet as well as the values of p sc ad q sc (Fig. 4). Ray diagrams are show for leses with magificatios of -, -2 ad -3. Also show is a referece positive idex les for each. The referece leses (which caot be aplaatic) are of moderate idex, φ, with the same magificatio ad f/# as the leses they are compared to. They are bet for zero coma but also have spherical aberratio ear the miimum possible for the cofiguratio. Agai the egative idex leses produce superior foci. The les of idex ad magificatio is particularly iterestig. At this idex value the field curvature is also zero. This remarkable les cofiguratio has oly oe of the five Seidel aberratios, astigmatism. This is cofirmed by ray tracig which shows a oe dimesioal spot at the image plae. This is perfect focusig i the sagittal plae. Perfect focusig also occurs i the meridioal plae, i frot of sagittal focus. Oe may ask why this asymmetric les, q =, performs so well i a symmetric cofiguratio, p =. This les ca be equivaletly viewed as a bicocave doublet with oe compoet havig idex ad the other havig idex, i.e. free space. Drive by this observatio, we foud that all bicocave doublets with arbitrary idices of ± have idetical focusig properties. The oly observable differece is i the iteral rays, which are always symmetric about the plaer iterface, but make more extreme agles at higher idex magitude. Fabricatio of ay of these egative idex leses is quite feasible usig periodically structured artificial materials. Curret artificial material desigs ca operate at frequecies from megahertz through terahertz[8], where there are umerous commuicatio ad imagig applicatios. For example, les ateas could beefit both by a reductio i aberratios, which traslates directly ito icreased gai, ad by a reductio of mass, afforded by low desity artificial materials. Furthermore, these leses are eve easier to implemet tha a perfect les, sice they lack its severe structure period per wavelegth requiremets ad are more tolerat to losses[9]. Negative idex leses at visible light frequecies may also be possible, by usig photoic crystals, which have show potetial for egative refractio[, ]. Usig the curret optical system desig paradigm, aberratios are miimized by combiig elemets with coefficiets of opposite sig[2]. However, more elemets mea greater complexity ad cost. Takig advatage of a expaded parameter space that icludes egative
5 5 idex ca reduce the umber of required elemets possibly eve to oe. [] V. G. Veselago, Sov. Phys. Usp., 59 (968). [2] D. R. Smith, W. Padilla, D. C. Vier, S. C. Nemat-Nasser, ad S. Schultz, Phys.
