Setting Let M be a smooth compact manifold of dimension n 2 be fixed. Let H : T M R be a Hamiltonian of class C 2 satisfying the following properties: (H1) Superlinear growth: For every K 0, there is C (K) R such that H(x, p) K p + C (K) (x, p) T M. (H2) Uniform convexity: For every (x, p) T M, 2 H p 2 (x, p) is positive definite.

For sake of simplicity, we may assume that M = T n, that is that H : R n R n R satisfies (H1)-(H2) and is periodic with respect to the x variable.

A first result of regularity We are concerned with the regularity properties of viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation H(x, d x u) = 0 x M (HJ).

A first result of regularity We are concerned with the regularity properties of viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation H(x, d x u) = 0 x M (HJ). Theorem (Rifford 2007) Let H : T M R be a Hamiltonian of class C 2 satisfying (H1)-(H2) and u : M R be a viscosity solution of (HJ). Then the function u is semiconcave on M. Moreover, the singular set of u is nowhere dense in M and u is C 1,1 loc on the open dense set M \ Σ(u).

Reminder: Σ(u) = { } x M u not diff. at x

Semiconcave functions A function u : M R is called semiconcave if it can be written locally (in charts) as u = g + h, the sum of a smooth function g and a concave function h with a universal upper bound on the C 2 -norm of g.

Graph of a semiconcave function

Characterization of viscosity solutions Let L : TM R be the Tonelli Lagrangian associated with H by Legendre-Fenchel duality, that is } L(x, v) := max p v H(x, p) (x, v) TM. p T x M { Proposition The function u : M R is a viscosity solution of (HJ) iff: (i) For every Lipschitz curve γ : [a, b] M, we have u ( γ(b) ) u ( γ(a) ) b a L ( γ(t), γ(t) ) ds. (ii) x M, there is a curve γ x : (, 0] M such that u ( γ(b) ) u ( γ(a) ) = b a L ( γ(t), γ(t) ) ds a < b < 0.

Semiconcavity of critical solutions γ x γ x x z = γ x ( 1)

Semiconcavity of critical solutions γ x γ x x z = γ x ( 1) u(x) = u(z) L ( γ x (t), γ x (t) ) dt

Semiconcavity of critical solutions γ x γ x x z = γ x ( 1) u(x) = u(z) + u(x ) u(z) L ( γ x (t), γ x (t) ) dt L ( γ (t), γ (t) ) dt

Semiconcavity of critical solutions γ x γ x x z = γ x ( 1) Thus u(x ) u(x) + u(x) = u(z) + u(x ) u(z) L ( γ x (t), γ x (t) ) dt L ( γ (t), γ (t) ) dt L ( γ (t), γ (t) ) L ( γ x (t), γ x (t) ) dt 1

Rest of the proof We can repeat the previous argument to show that for every x M, every semi-calibrated curve γ x : (, 0] M and every t > 0, the graph of u at γ x ( t) admits a support function of class C 2 from below.

Rest of the proof We can repeat the previous argument to show that for every x M, every semi-calibrated curve γ x : (, 0] M and every t > 0, the graph of u at γ x ( t) admits a support function of class C 2 from below. Moreover, we can show that for every x M, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the limiting differential of u at x, d u(x) := {lim du(x k ) x k x, u diff at x k }, and the set of semi-calibrated curves.

Rest of the proof We can repeat the previous argument to show that for every x M, every semi-calibrated curve γ x : (, 0] M and every t > 0, the graph of u at γ x ( t) admits a support function of class C 2 from below. 21 A beautiful result by Arnaud Theorem (Arnaud 08) Let M = T 2 and H : T M R be an Hamiltonian of class C 2 satisfying (H1)-(H2). Let u : M R be a solution of (HJ) of class C 1 without singularities. Then u is C 1,1

A beautiful result by Arnaud Theorem (Arnaud 08) Let M = T 2 and H : T M R be an Hamiltonian of class C 2 satisfying (H1)-(H2). Let u : M R be a solution of (HJ) of class C 1 without singularities. Then u is C 1,1 and C 2 almost everywhere.

We call singularity any equilibrium of the characteristic flow of u, that is any x M such that H p (x, d xu) = 0.

We call singularity any equilibrium of the characteristic flow of u, that is any x M such that Remark H p (x, d xu) = 0. Note that u C 1 u C 1,1 and the graph of x d x u is a Lipschitz Lagrangian submanifold of T M which is invariant by the Hamiltonian flow φ H t.

Green bundles I D φ H t (θ)φ H t V θ θ V φ H t (θ) For every θ = (x, d x u) T M and every t R, we define the Lagrangian subspace Gθ t T θt M by (V θ {0} R 2 ) Gθ t := ( ) ( ) φ H t V φ H t (θ).

Green bundles II Definition For every θ = (x, d x u), we define the positive and negative Green bundles at θ as G + θ := lim t + G t θ and G θ := lim t G t θ G θ θ G + θ V θ

Green bundles III The following properties hold: For every θ = (x, d x u), G θ G + θ.

Green bundles III The following properties hold: For every θ = (x, d x u), G θ G + θ. The function x M G + (x,d x u) is upper-semicontinuous.

Green bundles III The following properties hold: For every θ = (x, d x u), G θ G + θ. The function x M G + (x,d x u) is upper-semicontinuous. The function x M G (x,d x u) is lower-semicontinuous.

Green bundles III The following properties hold: For every θ = (x, d x u), G θ G + θ. The function x M G + (x,d x u) is upper-semicontinuous. The function x M G (x,d x u) is lower-semicontinuous. So, if G + (x,d x u) = G (x,d x u) for some x then both functions are continuous at x.

Green bundles III The following properties hold: For every θ = (x, d x u), G θ G + θ. The function x M G + (x,d x u) is upper-semicontinuous. The function x M G (x,d x u) is lower-semicontinuous. So, if G + (x,d x u) = G (x,d x u) for some x then both functions are continuous at x. For every x M, we have G (x,d x u) Hess Cu(x) G + (x,d x u), where Hess C u(x) denotes the Clarke generalized Hessian of u at x.
