8 HISTORY HEINRICH MOSER Heinrich Moser was born in Schaffhausen, in Both his grandfather, Johannes, and his father, Erhard, were official city watchmakers, an office bestowed on craftsmen of the highest calibre. Starting his apprenticeship under his father, Heinrich quickly became an expert watchmaker and he continued his studies in Le Locle - a centre of Swiss watchmaking excellence. His remarkable artistic skill as a watchmaker soon gained him international respect, and at the age of just 21, he set up on his own. Heinrich's entrepreneurial spirit led him to St. Petersburg where he founded H. Moser & Cie. in The company's rare and exquisite creations were gracing the vest pockets of Russian princes and members of the Imperial Court. In 1829, Heinrich Moser was already expanding and built a factory in Le Locle. Aged just 43 he returned to Schaffhausen, a prosperous watch manufacturer, where he contributed to the industrial expansion there. His pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial zeal saw him contribute to several ventures in addition to running H. Moser & Cie. Most notable in 1866, was a hydro-mechanical power station, situated on the Rhine in Schaffhausen. After Heinrich Moser's death in 1874, H. Moser & Cie. continued production until the late 1970s. 9 H. MOSER & CIE. TODAY In 2005, Heinrich Moser's great-grandson, Roger Nicholas Balsiger, joined forces with Dr. Jürgen Lange and Dr. Thomas Straumann to re-establish H. Moser & Cie. in the Canton of Schaffhausen with a new Manufacture. Roger Nicholas Balsiger continues to act as Honorary Chairman and heads the Heinrich and Henri Moser Foundation governing the Moser Family Museum in his ancestors home, Charlottenfels Manor. In 2012, the Meylan family, with a rich heritage in fine watchmaking, brought invaluable experience to the company. Chairman of MELB Holding, Georges- Henri Meylan, a man with uncommon entrepreneurial vision, believes that by investing in Swiss watch manufacturers of rare quality, he can build an independent watch group to benefit those involved at present, as well as future generations. 14 IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING IN-HOUSE We believe in-house manufacturing to be sacrosanct. Our company s R&D department, technical section and integrated assembly workshops not only ensure most parts of an H. Moser watch movement are made in-house, but that all design, research and development are also carried out on the premises. This gives us total control over quality, very rare in watch manufacturing today. Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Golden Edition. MOVEMENTS Our entrepreneurial heritage finds its ultimate expression in the movement of each H. Moser timepiece. Our passion to innovate has resulted in the development of no less than 8 integrated movements over the last decade, a remarkable achievement. Each is inspired by pocket watch movements from Heinrich Moser s era, boasting exceptional performance levels and carefully selected, ingenious features which can be admired through sapphire crystal case-backs. Exceptionally large and fitting perfectly in their case, each movement is developed specifically for the watch it runs in. Movement during development. 14

16 IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING HAIRSPRINGS The Straumann Hairsprings we produce are made from special alloys to ensure the highest precision and accuracy. These hairsprings ensure that the centre of gravity does not wander from the centre of the arbor even when the temperature changes. When rolled, the hairspring wire is passed through a series of dies and flat-rolled to an accuracy of 0.1 thousandth of a millimetre. The hairsprings are made to a precise specification for each model. Our craftsmen then wind these exceptionally thin wires into a spring assembly and treat them in a high-vacuum furnace to produce the finished balance springs. Skilled régleuses (balance-spring fitters) then rivet a metal ring to the centre and form a special curve, such as a Breguet overcoil, to the outer end of the hairspring. Watch connoisseurs recognise the value of hairsprings made in-house, as well as the fact we are not dependent on others for delivery. Escapement wheel in solid 18-carat gold. ESCAPEMENT WHEEL Our escapement wheels are finely machined from solid gold. This offers the advantage of a working surface with a glass-smooth finish. Friction is further reduced with the ruby escape pallets acting on the club teeth of the escapement wheel. The rare use of gold in this area is an H. 17 MAINPLATES As key components in the movement, our bridges and mainplates are produced with extreme accuracy. It requires no less than 87 tools and two hours to produce the main plate of a Perpetual Calendar. Only the most experienced programmers are capable of steering our machines to ensure the precision of close to a micron. ASSEMBLY Passion, skill and patience set our master watchmakers apart. Only the best are therefore able to assemble our complex Manufacture movements. One week is necessary to assemble the 350 parts of a Perpetual Calendar, and no less than 20 days of quality control are necessary before a calibre is released. FINISHING Individual parts are finished with loving attention to detail and are typical of how our watchmakers express their art. 20 INGENIOUS PRODUCTS INGENIOUS PRODUCTS Our watches are produced in such small numbers that they are very rare. So rare, in fact, that you will probably have never seen one. Built and designed with uncommon skill and flair, each watch incorporates a number of ingenious functions, all practical and simple to use, as well as being innovative. STRAUMANN DOUBLE HAIRSPRING A mechanical watch movement generally houses an escapement or possibly a tourbillon with a single hairspring to regulate the accuracy. Our Straumann Double Hairspring, found in only a select number of our watches, is a very rare and useful feature as it reduces gravitational errors to a minimum and guarantees consistent timekeeping whatever position the watch is in. ESCAPEMENT MODULE The interchangeable Moser escapement module is one of our cleverest features; developed to simplify the adjustment, cleaning and servicing of the watch. It enables the watchmaker to remove the existing escapement module, clean and oil the rest of the movement before installing a new pre-adjusted module. Most watches have only a single hairspring, but H. Moser also has developed this module with a Straumann Double Hairspring which is available on a select few watches in our collection. 21 7-DAY POWER RESERVE We are remarkable for offering several models with a 7-day power reserve, a valuable asset in a mechanical watch of this calibre. This is achieved by the use of two barrels in the movement. The actual winding springs are made from the alloy Nivaflex. Our power reserve indicators are on the movement side of most of our watches, visible through the sapphire crystal case-back. DOUBLE PULL CROWN Many of our watches featuring a date, or a second time zone, have a Double Pull Crown. This smart, simple feature allows the crown to be pulled out in two stages, the first for adjusting the date or second time zone, the second for stopping the movement and setting the time. With this function, the watch continues to indicate the correct hour, minute and second without interruption when adjusting the date or additional displays Solid 18-carat red gold rotor, Endeavour Dual Time. PAWL WINDING SYSTEM In our automatic movement, we use an ingenious pawl winding system to transfer the energy derived from the solid gold rotor to the barrel. 22 INGENIOUS PRODUCTS HACKING SECONDS The incorporation of a hacking seconds into our movements is an ingenious feature, which enables the watch to be set precisely to the second. The seconds hand remains stationary when the crown is pulled out to adjust the time; and starts moving again the instant the crown is pushed in. DUAL TIME DISPLAY On our Endeavour Dual Time, in addition to the hour and minute hands, a red hand indicates the hour in a second time zone. Adjustable in one-hour increments at any time of day, this colourful hand can be cleverly hidden under the hour hand should the wearer not require the dual time function. The Double Pull Crown enables adjustment of the second time zone hour without any risk of inadvertently stopping the watch or altering the primary time display. Easy to adjust and read: the Moon Phase Display. MOON PHASE DISPLAY The moon phase display on the Endeavour Moon exhibits exceptional accuracy, as well as rare beauty. It shows the phases of the moon as seen in the Northern hemisphere, and can be adjusted and read accurately to the minute. The watch s ingenious gear train translates the time it takes the moon to orbit the Earth so precisely that the resulting deviation is only 0.23 seconds per day or just 1 day after 1,027 years. 23 VERY BIG DATE H. Moser features one of the biggest date displays on the market. Thanks to the Double Pull Crown it is easy to set without inadvertently changing the time. Located at 6 o clock on the Endeavour Big Date and at 3 o clock on the Perpetual Calendar, it is comprised of two date rings lying one on top of the other. This very rare feature means that each individual digit, regardless of size, will always appear in the centre of the date window without the need for a leading zero or blank panel. PERPETUAL CALENDAR Our Perpetual Calendar is best known for its simple design. This is possible in part due to the ingenious display for the month: a short central arrow hand uses the hour indices to indicate the month. This exceptional solution led the Perpetual Calendar to be recognised in the category complicated watch at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in Flash date direction on the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar. FLASH CALENDAR Unlike most other calendars which change gradually, an H. Moser Flash Calendar is very rare in that it changes from one date to the next in a fraction of a second. This is a feature the Endeavour Big Date and the Perpetual Calendar share. The Flash Calendar is particularly impressive and useful on the Perpetual Calendar, as the date instantaneously changes at midnight to the correct date, even on short months such as February. It compensates mechanically for the differing number of days in the months, hence the name perpetual. The sapphire crystal case-back reveals the H. Moser HMC 341 movement as well as the leap year cycle. The remarkable design of the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar is possible in part due to the ingenious display for the month: this short central arrow hand uses the 12 hour indices to indicate the month. 59 MOON PHASES Displayed in a large window at 6 o clock are the phases of the moon, as seen from the Northern hemisphere, which can be adjusted and read accurately to the minute. The moon-phase disc shows the current phase of the moon in the window aperture, from the 8 lunar phases. Each marking on the lower edge of the display represents one day, allowing you to calculate to the day when the next moon phase will occur. Despite the extraordinarily accurate display, the moon phase can be easily corrected using a pin pusher on the side of the case, opposite the crown. Additional orientation between day and night is provided by a small central hand rotating once every 24 hours. 59

Thanks to the Double Pull Crown it is easy to adjust both forwards and backwards, without inadvertently changing the time. This watch boasts the H. Moser Flash Calendar which enables instant date changes. Housed in the date window, located at 6 o clock, the big date comprises two rings lying one on top of the other; numbers 1 to 15 are found on the upper ring, and numbers 16 to 31 on the lower ring. One of our cleverest features, it was developed to simplify the adjustment, cleaning and servicing of the watch. 91 MOSER TOURBILLON MODULE The sensation at the heart of the H. Moser Tourbillon Dual Time is the interchangeable Moser Tourbillon Module. The inspiration for H. Moser & Cie. was to construct this ingenious minute tourbillon as a module for the ease and accuracy of assembly and service. This is no easy feat, since the tourbillon components are even smaller than a conventional escapement. A further improvement was possible with the addition of a Straumann Double Hairspring within the tourbillon. With the gravitational influence typical in a hairspring compensated by these meticulously paired hairsprings, the result is a tourbillon with enhanced accuracy and greater precision. 91

97 REFINED DESIGN The Venturer Small Seconds is infused with design elements from traditional pocket watches and clever cues from the Bauhaus era of the 1920s and convex forms of the 1960s. This includes a larger bezel opening, revealing the extremely restrained and elegant H. Moser dial. In keeping with these clean lines, the dial has a convex profile and the hands follow this contour. The baton design and the swallow-shaped hands are long and slim, expressing a dynamic character. Carefully selected features are shared with other collections, such as the crown with the Moser M adorning its vertical flank and the curving lines of the satin brushed area embellishing the case band. 99 SERVICING Being the lucky owner of a very rare H. Moser watch, you want to ensure a long service lifetime of your timepiece. This can be achieved if you have your watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker at least every five years. Regular maintenance is crucial for consistent performance, eliminating or greatly reducing wear on mechanical components that eventually could lead to loss in accuracy or disable special features like the steps before the watch is oiled with high-precision oils, each specifically developed for its use. The serviced movement is then placed back into the ultrasonicallycleaned case and it is quality tested during 2 cycles of the power reserve including water resistance.
