First, we re an independent, Swiss, family-run business which believes in challenging the norm this is nothing new as H. Moser & Cie. has a long history of entrepreneurialism. Second, all of our movements are manufactured in-house. Every watch we make is built and finished by hand, hence we make very few watches. And third, we make ingenious products. Our watches house unique features and our complications are simple and functional. It s part of our DNA to do everything in our power to make better watches. 7 HEINRICH MOSER Heinrich s entrepreneurial spirit led him to St. Petersburg where he founded H. Moser & Cie. The company s rare and exquisite creations were soon gracing the wrists of Russian princes and members of the Imperial Court. They even sold movements to other companies; most of Fabergé s table clocks were equipped with movements produced by H. Moser & Cie. In 1829, to guarantee the quality of watches bearing his name, Heinrich Moser built a factory in Le Locle Heinrich Moser was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, in Both his grandfather, Johannes, and his father, Erhard, were watchmakers of the highest calibre. Heinrich was the beneficiary of their rare knowledge, quickly becoming an expert watchmaker in Le Locle. It wasn t long before his remarkable artistic skill gained him international respect, and at the age of just 21, he set up on his own. In 1828, a centre of Swiss watchmaking excellence. Aged just 43 he returned to Schaffhausen, a prosperous watch manufacturer and merchant where he contributed to the industrial expansion of the region. His pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial zeal saw him contribute to many other fields in addition to running H. Moser & Cie. Most notable was the completion (in 1864) of the largest dam in Switzerland at the time, situated on the Rhine near Schaffhausen. 7

8 H. M O S E R & C I E. T O D AY In 2005, Heinrich Moser s great-grandson, Roger Nicholas Balsiger, joined forces with Dr. Jurgen Lange and Thomas Straumann to re-establish H. Moser & Cie. in the canton of Schaffhausen with a new Manufacture. In 2012, the Meylan family, with a rich heritage in fine watchmaking, brought its invaluable experience to the company. Its chairman, GeorgesHenri Meylan, a man with uncommon entrepreneurial vision, believes that by investing in Swiss watch manufacturers of rare quality, he can build an independent watch group which not only benefits those involved at present, but also future generations. 10 MOVEMENTS IN-HOUSE We believe in-house manufacturing to be sacrosanct. Our company s R&D department, technical section and integrated assembly workshop not only ensure most parts of an H. Moser watch movement are made in-house, but that all design, research and development are also carried out on the premises. This gives us total control over quality, very rare in watch manufacturing today. Our entrepreneurial heritage finds its ultimate expression in the movement of each H. Moser timepiece. Our passion to innovate has resulted in the development of no less than 6 integrated movements over the last decade, a remarkable achievement. Beating at 2.5 Hz, each is inspired by pocket watch movements from Heinrich Moser s era, boasting exceptional performance levels and carefully selected, ingenious features which can be admired through sapphire crystal case-backs. Exceptionally large and fitting perfectly in their case, each movement is developed specifically for the watch it runs in. In the Perpetual Calendar the movement houses highly technical solutions such as the ingenious month indicator, contributing to the iconic design of this piece. The thoughtful addition of two date discs ensures the Perpetual Calendar will always display the correct time, date 10

11 and month, even allowing for leap years. Developed for ease of use, the watch can be easily adjusted forwards or backwards at any time. The movement of the Perpetual Moon ensures unrivalled accuracy and allows for the watch s generous moon phase display. It also houses the hacking seconds function, enabling the wearer to set the time to the second, and boasts a 7-day power reserve. The moon phases can also be easily adjusted and set accurately to the minute. On the Nomad Dual Time, the movement features H. Moser s ingenious automatic mechanism. A superb pawl winding system, powered by a solid gold rotor that winds bi-directionally, providing a minimum power reserve of 3 days. This clever, minimal design also allows for the housing of the dual time function, which works via an additional hour hand and an AM-PM indicator. Inside the Monard Big Date, the movement boasts an array of innovative and useful features, such as the Flash Calendar - powered by a source independent of the time-keeping function - the double barrel, which guarantees a minimum 7-day power reserve and the patented easy-to-use Double Pull Crown. The movement within the Monard Centre Seconds combines craftsmanship of the very rarest quality with groundbreaking innovation, incorporating H. Moser s unique removable escapement module to make servicing easier. The Mayu Small Seconds movement incorporates a pallet fork and escapement wheel in hardened solid gold with functionally optimised surfaces to minimise friction and the associated wear. 11

12 HAIRSPRINGS to an accuracy of 0.1 thousandth of a millimetre. The hairsprings are made to a precise specification for each model. Our craftsmen then thread four of these exceptionally thin wires onto a tool, before winding them into a spring assembly and treating them in a high-vacuum furnace to produce the finished balance springs. Skilled régleuses (balance-spring fitters) then rivet a metal ring to the centre and form a special curve called a Breguet overcoil to the outer end of the hairspring. Watch connoisseurs recognise the value of hairsprings made in-house, as well as the fact we are not dependent on others for delivery. ESCAPEMENT WHEEL The Straumann Hairsprings we produce are made from special alloys to ensure the highest precision and accuracy. These hairsprings ensure that the centre of gravity does not wander from the centre of the arbor even when the temperature changes. When rolled, the hairspring wire is passed through a series of dies and flat-rolled Our escapement wheels are finely machined from solid gold. This offers the advantage of a working surface with a glass-smooth finish. Friction is further reduced with the ruby escape pallets acting on the club teeth of the escapement wheel. The rare use of gold in this area is an H. Moser tradition dating back to our earliest watches. 12

13 FINISHING MAINPLATES Individual parts are finished with loving attention to detail and are typical of how our watchmakers express their art. The sunburst pattern on the plates of the movement and the Moser stripes and gold engraving on the bridges are excellent examples of this. A good reason to reveal every H. Moser movement with a sapphire crystal case-back. ASSEMBLY As key components in the movement, our bridges and mainplates are produced with extreme accuracy. It requires no less than 87 tools and two hours to produce the main plate of a Perpetual Calendar. Only the most experienced programmers are capable of steering our machines to ensure the precision of close to a micron. Passion, skill and patience set our master watchmakers apart. Only the best are therefore able to assemble our complex Manufacture movements. One week is necessary to assemble the 350 parts of a Perpetual Calendar, and no less than 20 days of quality control are necessary before a calibre is released. These exacting quality standards make every H. Moser watch very rare. 13

15 INGENIOUS PRODUCTS DOUBLE HAIRSPRING Our watches are produced in such small numbers that they are very rare. So rare, in fact, that you will probably have never seen one. Built and designed with uncommon skill and flair, each watch incorporates a number of ingenious functions, all practical and simple to use, as well as being innovative. ESCAPEMENT MODULE A mechanical watch movement generally houses an escapement with a single hairspring to regulate the accuracy. Our Straumann Double Hairspring, found in only a select number of pieces, is a very rare and useful feature as it reduces gravitational errors to a minimum and guarantees consistent timekeeping whatever position the watch is in. The interchangeable Moser escapement module is one of our cleverest features; developed to simplify the adjustment, cleaning and servicing of the watch. It enables the watchmaker to remove the existing escapement module, clean and oil the rest of the movement before installing a new pre-adjusted module. 15

16 PAWL WINDING SYSTEM DAY POWER RESERVE In our automatic movement, we use an ingenious pawl winding system to transfer the energy derived from the solid gold rotor to the barrel. This system enables the rotor to wind the watch when turning in either direction, reducing the time to fully wind the watch. DOUBLE PULL CROWN We are remarkable for offering several models with a 7-day power reserve, a valuable asset in a mechanical watch of this calibre. This is achieved by the use of two barrels in the movement. The actual winding springs are made from the alloy Nivaflex. Our power reserve indicators are on the movement side of most of our watches, visible through the sapphire crystal case-back. All of our watches featuring a date, or a second time zone, have a Double Pull Crown. This smart, simple feature allows the crown to be pulled out in two stages, the first for adjusting the date or second time zone, the second for stopping the movement and setting the time. With this function, the watch continues to indicate the correct hour, minute and second without interruption when adjusting the date or additional displays. 16

17 HACKING SECONDS DUAL TIME DISPLAY The incorporation of a hacking seconds into our movements is an ingenious feature, which enables the watch to be set precisely to the second. The seconds hand remains stationary when the crown is pulled out to adjust the time; and starts moving again the instant the crown is pushed in. MOON PHASE DISPLAY The moon phase display on the Perpetual Moon exhibits exceptional accuracy, as well as rare beauty. It shows the phases of the moon as seen in the Northern hemisphere, and can be adjusted and read accurately to the minute. The watch s ingenious gear train translates the time it takes the moon to orbit the Earth so precisely that the resulting deviation is only 0.23 seconds per day or just 1 day after 1,027 years. On our Nomad Dual Time, in addition to the hour and minute hands, a red hand indicates the hour in a second time zone. Adjustable in one-hour increments at any time of day, this colourful hand can be cleverly hidden under the hour hand should the wearer not require the dual time function. The Double Pull Crown enables adjustment of the second time zone hour without any risk of inadvertently stopping the watch or altering the primary time display. 17

18 FLASH CALENDAR VERY BIG DATE H. Moser features one of the biggest date displays on the market. Thanks to the Double Pull Crown it is easy to set without inadvertently changing the time. Located at 6 o clock on the Monard Big Date and at 3 o clock on the Perpetual Calendar, it is comprised of two date rings lying one on top of the other. This very rare feature means that each individual digit, regardless of size, will always appear in the centre of the date window without the need for a leading zero or blank panel. Unlike most other calendars which change gradually, an H. Moser Flash Calendar is very rare in that it changes from one date to the next in a fraction of a second. This is a feature the Monard Big Date and the Perpetual Calendar share. The Flash Calendar is particularly impressive and useful on the Perpetual Calendar, as the date instantaneously changes at midnight to the correct date, even on short months such as February. PERPETUAL CALENDAR Our Perpetual Calendar is best known for its simple design. This is possible in part due to the ingenious display for the month: a short central arrow hand uses the hour indices to indicate the month. This exceptional solution led the Perpetual Calendar to be recognised at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in

25 PERPETUAL FLASH CALENDAR Our Perpetual Calendar is best known for its simple design. It shows only the time, date, month and power reserve. It compensates mechanically for the differing number of days in the months, hence the name perpetual. The sapphire crystal case-back reveals the H. Moser HMC 341 movement as well as the leap year cycle. The remarkable design of the Perpetual Calendar is possible in part due to the ingenious display for the month: this short central arrow hand uses the 12 hour indices to indicate the month. The H. Moser big date display is also very rare in that it is a Flash Calendar, generating the power to change the date in a fraction of a second. This combination of exceptional solutions led the Perpetual Calendar to be recognised at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in

31 MOON PHASES Displayed in a large window at 6 o clock are the phases of the moon, as seen from the Northern hemisphere, which can be adjusted and read accurately to the minute. The moon-phase disc shows the current phase of the moon in the window aperture, from the 8 lunar phases. Each marking on the lower edge of the display represents one day, allowing you to calculate to the day when the next moon phase will occur. Despite the extraordinarily accurate display, the moon phase can be easily corrected using a pin pusher on the side of the case, opposite the crown. Additional orientation between day and night is provided by a small central hand rotating once every 24 hours. 31

Linked to the wearer s primary time zone, this indicator changes from white to black in a fraction of a second at 12 noon, and then from black to white at midnight. This ingenious feature, which makes keeping in touch with your home time simple and easy, can be attributed to a spring that stores up energy for around eight hours without affecting the rate at which the watch runs. 37

49 7-DAY POWER RESERVE We are remarkable for offering a minimum 7-day power reserve on the Monard Centre Seconds. This is achieved by the use of the H. Moser double barrel that houses winding springs made from the alloy Nivaflex and arranged in series. The power reserve indicator is visible through the sapphire crystal case-back. 49

55 HACKING SECONDS The incorporation of a hacking seconds into our watches is an ingenious feature, which enables the watch to be set precisely to the second. The seconds hand remains stationary when the crown is pulled out to adjust the time and it starts moving again the instant the crown is pushed in, to coincide with a time signal. 55

Our experienced and highly trained watchmakers in the Manufacture in Switzerland, and in approved service centres around the world, carefully assess your H. Moser watch when they receive it. Thereafter, the watchmaker removes the movement from the case, disassembling the hands and dial before taking the movement apart. Cleaning, inspecting and adjusting the movement SERVICING Being the lucky owner of a very rare H. Moser watch, you want to ensure a long service lifetime of your timepiece. This can be achieved if you have your watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker at least every five years. Regular maintenance is crucial for consistent performance, eliminating or greatly reducing wear on mechanical and escapement are the next steps before the watch is oiled with highprecision oils, each specifically developed for its use. The serviced movement is then placed back into the ultrasonicallycleaned case and it is then quality tested during 2 cycles of the power reserve including water resistance.
