1 Aticommutator Norm Formula for Proectio Operators arxiv: v1 math.fa] 3 Apr 16 Sam Walters Uiversity of Norther British Columbia ABSTRACT. We prove that for ay two proectio operators f, g o Hilbert space, their aticommutator orm is give by the formula f g+gf f g + fg. The result demostrates a iterestig cotrast betwee the commutator ad aticommutator of two proectio operators o Hilbert space. Specifically, the orm of the aticommutator f g+g f is a simple quadratic fuctio of the orm f g while the commutator orm f g g f is ot a fuctio of f g. Nevertheless, the result gives the followig bouds that are fuctios of f g o the commutator orm: f g fg f g gf f g. 1. The Mai Result The mai result of this paper is provig the followig orm formula. Theorem 1.1. For ay two proectio operators f, g o Hilbert space, f g+g f f g + f g. (1.1 I particular, the aticommutator orm of proectio operators is a simple quadratic fuctio of the orm of their product. This is quite differet from the commutator f g g f of proectios sice its orm is ot a fuctio of the orm of f g (see remark below, or is f g a fuctio of f g g f. I view of Theorem 1.1 we ca evertheless give bouds o the commutator orm that are fuctios of the orm f g. I this coectio, the above theorem the has the followig the cosequece. Corollary 1.. 2 Sam Walters Proof. By Theorem 1.1 we have f g g f g f ( f g+g f g f f g+g f f g f g. Lemma 3.1 below gives the iequality f g g f f g. (Lemma 3.1 ad its proof are give at the ed of the paper. We made a applicatio of Theorem 1.1 i ] i order to obtai sharp upper boud estimates for proectio operator o Hilbert space that are early orthogoal to their (uitary symmetries. Specifically, Theorem 1.1 has lead us to obtai the relatively larger boud of.455 that would guaratee that if a proectio operator e ad a Hermitia uitary operator w o Hilbert space satisfy ewe <.455, the a proectio operator q exists such that 1 qwq ad e q 1 ewe +4 ewe. (Further, q lies i the C*-subalgebra of B(H geerated by e ad wew. Remark 1.3. It is ot hard to see that the commutator orm of proectios f g g f is geerally ot a fuctio of the orm f g. For istace, if f g, the f g 1 ad their commutator is zero, while if p,q are the two geeratig proectios of the uiversal C*-algebra geerated by two proectios, the pq 1 ad pq qp 1. Coversely, either is the orm f g a fuctio of the orm f g g f, sice for the by matrix proectios a 1 ], b ], oe has ab ba 1 pq qp while ab 1 1 pq. Remark 1.4. We cautio that it is ot eough to check equalities such as that i Theorem 1.1 for by matrices over the complex umbers ad expect that they geerally hold for all proectios. For example, oe ca check that the equatio f g g f f g (1 f g (1. holds for all proectios i M (C. Oe ca, however, give simple examples of 4 by 4 proectios for which equatio (1. does ot hold. Equatio (1. also does ot hold for the two proectios p,q of the uiversal C*-algebra geerated by two proectios sice they do ot commute ad pq 1. Ackowledgmets. This research was partly supported by a grat from the Natural Sciece ad Egieerig Coucil of Caada. 1 The coditio qwq, of course, ust meas that q is orthogoal to its symmetric image wqw uder w. Ad so the coditio that ewe is small meas that e is early orthogoal to its symmetry.
3 Aticommutator Norm of Proectio Operators 3. Proof of f g+gf f g + fg We shall use the followig lemma. Lemma.1. For ay two proectios f,g ad m 1 we have ( f g m fg m 1. Proof. By iductio, oe checks the equality ( f g m ( f g f m 1 ( f g (for m 1. Usig f g f f g, we have as required. ( f g m ( f g f m 1 f g f g m f g f g m 1 We begi by observig ad establishig the followig formula for the powers of the aticommutator i terms of polyomials i the operators f g,g f, f g f, ad g f g: ( f g+g f P ( f g+p (g f+q ( f g f+q (g f g (.1 where P,Q ( 1,,... are polyomials give recursively accordig to the dyamics P +1 (xxp (x+xq (x, (. Q +1 (xp (x+xq (x with iitial data P 1 (x x, Q 1 (x. The equatio (.1 ca be checked by iductio by makig strog use of the fact that f,g are proectios. I order to fid these polyomials i explicit form we express (. i matrix form ] P+1 Q +1 x x 1 x ] P Q ]. I order to telescope this expressio we diagoalize the matrix here as follows: ] ] ] x x x+ x S 1 x x S x 1 x x, S : 1 1 (which is easily checked. Iterestigly, these polyomials tur out to be similar to Fiboacci polyomials as they will be give i very similar closed forms i terms of x.
4 4 Sam Walters Therefore, we calculate the polyomials as follows ] ] ] ] P+1 x x P1 (x+ x S ]S Q +1 1 x Q 1 (x x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x yieldig the closed forms ] ] x x (x+ x ] 1 1 (x 1 x x 1 x] x ] ] ] x x (x+ x 1 1 (x x x x ] ] x x x(x+ x 1 1 x(x x P +1 (x x x Q +1 (x (x+ x +(x x ], (x+ x (x x ]. Next, we express these usig their biomial expasios: (x+ x ( x x 1 ( (x ( x x ( 1 x 1 ( Usig the otatio δ k 1(1+( 1k which is 1 whe k is eve ad whe k is odd, we ca write P +1 (x 1 ( ( x x (1+( 1 x 1 ( x x δ x 1 (. Let us choose odd N 1 so that ( N 1 P N (xx ( N 1 x δ x 1 (. δ 1 x N+1+ 1 ( 1

At this ucture we make use of the idetity ( N 1 A N (a : a l a (1+a (1 a ] l 1 N l1 which we shall call A N (a for simplicity, where a. We ca the write ad we obtai P N ( f g f g A N ( f g P N ( f g + P N (g f f g A N ( f g. Similarly we work out the orms Q N ( f g f ad Q N (g f g. ( x Q +1 (x x (1 ( 1 x 1 ( ( x x δ ad agai isertig N 1: Q N (x x put l where l,1,,...,n 1: Q N (x l ( N 1 x δ ( N 1 δ xn+ ( N 1 l x N+l. 1 x 1 ( 1 x 1 (
6 6 Sam Walters The orm becomes (usig ( f g f m f g m ( N 1 Q N ( f g f ( f g f N+l l or l Q N ( f g f f g where we use the idetity ( N 1 B N (a : l l N l ( N 1 l a l 1 which we shall call B N (a for coveiece. Let s write a f g. Takig N-th roots, which i the limit as N gives f g+g f 1/N a(1+a 1 1 N f g+g f f g + f g. 3. Proof of f g+gf f g + fg Ay two proectio operators f,g o Hilbert space H may be represeted i matrix block forms as ] ] I D V f, g V D

Here, D,D are positive operators o M ad M, respectively, ad V : M M, satisfyig the relatios D D VV, DV +VD V, D D V V. (i view of g beig a proectio. Sice ] ] f g( f g D V D V D +VV ] ] D we see that f g D. We ow work out the powers of the aticommutator as follows. First, we have ] ] ] D V D D V f g+g f + V V. We observe that the powers of this aticommutator have the form ] ( f g+g f F (D F 1 (DV where F (x is a certai sequece of polyomials with iteger coefficiets with iitial data F 1 (x x,f (x 1. We do ot eed to kow the etries at the bottom of the matrix because we are iterested i the orthwester 3 block F (D of ( f g+g f. Multiplyig ] ] F (D F 1 (DV D V DF (D+F V 1 (DVV ] F (DV or ( f g+g f +1 DF (D+(D D ] F 1 (D F (DV from which we see that the polyomial sequece has the Fiboacci-type recursio relatio F +1 (xxf (x+(x x F 1 (x. Telescopig this as oe would with ordiary Fiboacci umbers, oe evetually gets F (x 1 x/ ( x+1 +1 ( x 1 +1]. (Ideed, oe ca check this by iductio. This polyomial fuctio is (for each a icreasig fuctio over the iterval,. Therefore, sice D is a positive operator, we have ( f g+g f F (D F ( D F ( f g 1 f g ( f g ( f g 1 +1] 3 It is rather iterestig i this case that the iformatio regardig the aticommutator orm is cotaied i this block for large.
8 8 Sam Walters 1 f g ( f g ( ] f g f g +1 Takig -th roots (otig that the aticommutator f g+g f is a Hermitia operator f g+g f 1 ( ] 1/ fg ( f g f g / 1. f g +1 Lettig the right side coverges to f g + f g (sice (1 c 1/ 1 for 4 ay 1<c<1. This completes the proof of Theorem 1.1. We ed the paper with the proof of the lemma used by Corollary 1.. Lemma 3.1. For ay two proectios f,g o Hilbert space, f g gf f g. Further, f g g f f g f g f. Proof. Write f g g f ( f g g f ( f g g f f g f + g f g f g f g g f g f ad ote that the operator i the last orm ca be writte as the sum of two orthogoal positive operators: f g f + g f g f g f g g f g f f g(1 fg f +(1 fg f g(1 fuu + u u where u f g(1 f. So its orm is the max of the orms of each term, both of which are equal to u. Thus, as eeded. f g g f u f g f g f f g(1 f f g Note added i proof. A geerous colleague poited out to the author that with a bit more work, oe ca deduce the aticommutator orm formula from a theorem of Halmos i 1]. Our proof, however, is self-cotaied ad idepedet of this ad the formula (simple as it is seems to be ukow. 4 If 1<c<1 the 1<c c <1 for each 1, which gives <1 c 1 c < ad the result follows by takig -th roots.
