Thirteen phantoms of imagination Illustration from A HISTORY OF MADEIRA (R. Ackermann, London, UK, 1821.)
The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses. OF SUPERSTITION, Francis Bacon. ( ). Essays, Civil and Moral. The Harvard Classics
The belief in supernatural is truly fascinating as is the question of how certain causes and effects got associated with one another in the first place. Why is superstition so deeply rooted in humans? How can some beliefs be so common all around the world? Who was the first one to say that a black cat brings bad luck? Most superstitions linger between (mis)fortune, life and death. Some of them are bizarre, some intimidating, more than a few are hilarious, while many tell a lot about their land of origin. In the end, all of them come from fear or wishful thinking. Around this twisted view of reality entwined we find symbolism, mysticism, folklore and local history, always telling interesting stories.
In order to understand their (super)nature one has to take a good look into local customs, or the beliefs of some smaller traditional community. Where better to start than on a remote island in the Atlantic Madeira, the Portuguese archipelago located less than 400 km north of the Canary islands. The symbolism and mysticism around Madeiran superstitions originate mostly from the times when people feared witches as well as a devil who was seldom named that way, but rather disguised as a bad air or the evil eye, which was a bit more abstract take on the phantom enemy. On the other hand, the more ritual oriented superstitions come from the local folklore traditions, revolving mostly around marriage and food.
The Thirteen Phantoms of Imagination is result of a research done in less than a week spent on the island, mostly by looking into historical books and interviewing the local people. As a result, a set of postcards was produced, a selection of traditional superstitions from Madeira of sorts, made modern by translating the very common concept of superstitious spam into a more traditional context: Send these postcards to thirteen addresses, and you will have a long and fruitful life. I know you are rational and all, you know it doesn t work like that, but you ll post them anyway, just for the sake of it. Not because a part of you feels doing it will make a difference. Not at all.
All the photographs were taken during the MultiMadeira residency in Casa Pedra Sina by its participants. They sometimes reflect the content of the postcard, but sometimes they have as much to do with them as eating cheese has to do with losing memory. Good luck or good riddance, whichever works! Resources: CRENDICES E SUPERSTIÇÕES DO ARQUIPÉLAGO DA MADEIRA, Visconde do Porto da Cruz, Madeira, A HISTORY OF MADEIRA, R. 7 Thirteen phantoms of imagination SEND THESE POSTCARDS TO THIRTEEN ADDRESSES, AND YOU WILL HAVE A LONG AND FRUITFUL LIFE. OR AT LEAST A GOOD SUMMER.
Never sit thirteen people at a table if you don t want something bad to happen to the 13 th one.
If dogs are howling at night with no apparent reason beware of bad air or the evil eye.
If you come across a female chicken that sings like a rooster run away, for it is a bad omen.
If a stone rolls down your path, you touch it and it becomes a woman, beware for it is a witch. In order to save your soul you will have to take her home on your back.
Just so you know, witches suck the blood of children, but this can be avoided by putting scissors at the child s bedside.
If you fill your mouth with water in the morning and just listen you shall hear the first name of the one you marry.
If you don t want to jinx something positive you ve just said knock on wood, or as we say here; bater na Madeira.
If you put three names on a paper, and then in water and olive oil, the one that opens is the one you will marry.
Never sweep near someones feet if you re sweeping the floor. Unless you wish him harm.
You as a woman should be advised not to eat the last bit on the plate, or you might risk not getting married.
Eating too much cheese will take away your memory, so better be careful.
Never kiss a person with a lit candle in your hand, for that will bring you bad luck.
If you come across a witch make her go away by saying tosca, marosca, olhos na cara.
