Bret ETSI Industriales, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, 7 Ciudad Real, Spain PACS Qz Micro instailities. PACS Mj Particle eam interactions in plasmas. PACS Hr Electromagnetic waves. Astract. We present an investigation of the electromagnetic instailities which are triggered when an ultra relativistic electron eam passes through a plasma. The linear growth rate is computed for every direction of propagation of the unstale modes, and temperatures are modelled using simple waterag distriution functions. The ultra relativistic unstale spectrum is located around a very narrow and centered on a critical angle which value is given analytically. The growth rate of modes propagating in this direction decreases like k /. The interaction of a relativistic electron eam with a plasma is a suject of relevance from many fields of physics ranging from inertial confinement fusion [] to some astrophysical scenarios [2 4]. The linear analysis of the interaction reveals an highly unstale situation which has een investigated for a long time. Modes propagating along the eam are unstale within a certain range of wave-vector and form the electrostatic two-stream instaility. The so-called filamentation instaility is found for modes propagating transversely to the eam and finally, it can e proved that some modes propagating at aritrary angle to the eam are also unstale [5]. As far as the growth rate is concerned, we see that it is eventually a function of the parallel and perpendicular wave vector components. As long as the eam is not relativistic, the largest growth rate are found for wave vectors parallel to the eam which means that the two-stream instaility dominates the linear evolution of the system in this regime [6]. The situation evolves when considering a relativistic electron eam. Because relativistic electrons are harder to move in the direction of their motion than in the transverse direction, the two-stream growth rate is much more reduced than the growth rate of the modes propagating transversely, or even oliquely. If we denote the eam relativistic factor, the maximum two-stream growth rate is scaled like γ, the filamentation growth rate like γ /2 whereas the growth rate of the most unstale olique wave vector is scaled like γ / [5]. This shows that olique instailities should dominate all the more than the eam is relativistic. The ultra relativistic limit is relevant for astrophysical settings such as high energy cosmic rays or gamma ray ursts production scenarios, for which some authors consider relativistic factors up to 2 [2] and even 7 []. These unstale olique modes were first investigated in the cold limit (fluid approximation), and a temperature dependant treatment has only een developed recently [7]. As we shall see in this letter, accounting for temperatures in the eam c EDP Sciences
2 2 EUROPHYSICS LETTERS Z x Z z Fig. Numerical evaluation of the growth rate for a cold eam and a cold plasma, in terms of Z = kv /ω pp. The growth rate is normalized to its maximum value δ O given y eqs. (). Parameters are n /n p =. and = 2. and the plasma results in a very narrow olique unstale spectrum in the ultra relativistic limit. We thus consider a relativistic electron eam of velocity V = V e z, gamma factor = /( V 2/c2 ) /2 and density n passing through a plasma at electronic density n p n. Ions are supposed to form a fixed neutralizing ackground and we account for a plasma return neutralizing current [8] at velocity V p such as n V = n p V p. The system is therefore charge and current neutralized, and we study the staility of harmonic perturations exp(ik r iω). We implement a D formalism using the linearized relativistic Vlasov equation as well as Maxwell s ones. Given the symmetries of the prolem, the wave vector can e chosen within the (x, z) plan, and the dispersion equation reads [9] (ω 2 ε xx k 2 z c2 )(ω 2 ε zz k 2 x c2 ) (ω 2 ε xz + k z k x c 2 ) 2 =, () in terms of the dielectric tensor elements ε lm = δ lm + j=p, ω 2 pj n j ω 2 pl f j d p + ω2 pj γ p m n j ω 2 pl p m γ 2 k f j / p mω k p/γ d p, (2) where f p and f are the equilirium distriution functions for the plasma and the eam, m the electron mass, ω pp, the electronic plasma frequencies for the plasma and the eam, and
3 A. Bret: Olique electromagnetic instailities for an ultra relativistic electron eam passing through a plasm γ = ( + p 2 /m 2 c 2 ) /2. The dispersion equation () ridges etween the two-stream modes at k x = and the filamentation ones at k z =. Because the former modes are longitudinal (k E) while the later are purely transverse (k E = ), unstale olique modes are neither longitudinal nor transverse and a fully electromagnetic dispersion equation such as () is required to reach them. If we start considering a cold mono energetic eam entering a cold plasma, the resulting growth rate map is the one pictured on figure. We plot the growth rate normalized to the maximum olique one in terms of the reduced wave vector Z = kv /ω pp. In this cold limit, the maximum two-stream, filamentation, and olique growth rates read δ TS 2 4/ (n /n p ) /, δ F n /n p, δ O 2 4/ ( ) / n /n p. () One can check that the two-stream instaility is negligile compared to the olique and the normal modes. We also note on fig. that the most unstale modes form a continuum at Z z.9, starting from Z x >. The introduction of temperatures modify the picture in various ways. As long as they remain small, they can e modelled through some simple waterag distriutions and the tensor elements (2) can e calculated exactly [7]. It turns out that the resulting dispersion function has various singularities corresponding to various kind of preferential coupling etween a mode and some electron population. As the wave vector is more and more olique, these singularities evolve and two of them overlap for a critical inclination angle θ c with the eam, which ultra relativistic expression is simply tan θ c = + n /n p V tp /V, (4) where V tp is the plasma thermal velocity. At this junction, let us comment what is meant y small temperatures. As far as the plasma temperature is concerned, it simply means that the thermal velocity must remains small compared to the eam one. The present analysis is therefore valid for non-relativistic plasma temperatures, allowing for a kev plasma for example. As far as eam temperature is concerned, transverse and parallel temperatures can e treated differently. Let us assume a waterag distriution function defining a momentum spread around P = mv, n [ f = Θ(pz P + P t ) Θ(pz + P + P t ) ] [Θ(p x + P t ) Θ(p x P t )], 4P t P t (5) where Θ is the step function. As can e seen on eqs. (2), the tensor elements are mostly dependent of the velocity distriution through the quantities p/γ, and this is perfectly expected since the staility of a mode is a matter a wave particle interaction. Let us then evaluate the velocity spread ( v, v ) corresponding to the momentum spread (P t, P t ) defined aove. In the present ultra relativistic regime, we find v γ 2 P t m, v P t m. (6) We recover for v the velocity spread corresponding to the momentum spread P t. But v is reduced y a factor γ 2 so that the parallel eam temperature can e neglected in the very large limit.
4 4 EUROPHYSICS LETTERS Z x Z z Fig. 2 Numerical evaluation of the growth rate for a hot eam and a hot plasma, in terms of Z = kv /ω pp. The growth rate is normalized to its maximum value δ O given y eqs. (). Parameters are n /n p =. and = 2. The parallel eam velocity has een set to, and every other thermal velocities are c/. Considering a relativistic eam with = 2, n = n p / and neglecting its parallel thermal spread, we plot on fig. 2 the growth rate in terms of Z = kv /ω pp. The continuum of the most unstale modes oserved on fig. has turned into a very thin olique region where the growth rate is higher than 9% of its cold olique value δ O given y eq. () up to Z 5. Let us emphasize that unlike fig. where the largest reduced wave vector plotted is Z z =.5 and Z x = 5, we here extend the plot up to Z z = 5 and Z x = 5. Modes located aove the critical angle are unstale up to Z x /(V tp /V ) + Z z tan θ c [7]. We also note that the transition towards stale modes ellow the critical angle is very sharp so that the instaility domain is almost rigourously ounded y the directions θ c and π/2. The critical angle otained from eq. (4) is arctan() 84.8, which corresponds very precisely to what is oserved on the graph. In order to study the growth rate at large Z in the critical direction, we plot on figure the maximum growth rate at angle θ c for Z up to 4. We oserve a decrease with Z which can presently e fitted y = 2.Z /. It is interesting to notice that the maximum filamentation growth rate is here δ F =.4δ O so that the growth rate in the critical direction remains larger than the filamentation one until Z 5. In conclusion, we have evaluated the growth rate of the electromagnetic instailities for an ultra-relativistic eam passing through a non-relativistic plasma for any angle of propagation of the unstale modes. The parallel temperature of the eam can e neglected, and the

Within this region, the most unstale modes are concentrated on a very narrow and extending around the critical direction, with a growth rate decreasing like Z / k /.
