GLOBAL BEHAVIOR OF THE RICCI FLOW ON HOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS WITH TWO ISOTROPY SUMMANDS. arxiv:09.378v [math.dg] 9 Nov 009 LINO GRAMA AND RICARDO MIRANDA MARTINS Abstract. In this paper we study the global behavior of the Ricci flow equation for two classes of homogeneous manifolds with two isotropy summands. Using methods of the qualitative theory of differential equations we present the global phase portrait of such systems and derive some geometrical consequences on the structure of such manifolds under the action of the Ricci flow.. Introduction The Ricci flow of left-invariant metrics on homogeneous has been investigated intensively in the last years and many papers have been published about these systems for instance [5] and [0]. The key point for investigating homogeneous manifolds is that they provide examples of interesting phenomena see for example [] and [4]. The Ricci flow equation was introduced by Hamilton in 98 see [] and is defined by gt = Ricgt t where Ricg is the Ricci tensor of the Riemannian metric g. The solution of this equation the so called Ricci flow is a -parameter family of metrics gt in M. Intuitively this is the heat equation for the metric g. The Ricci flow equation for a arbitrary manifold is a nonlinear system of PDEs. However when restricted to the set of invariant metrics system reduces to a autonomous nonlinear system of ODEs. Because of this it is natural to proceed the study of the Ricci flow from a qualitative point of view using tools from the theory of dynamical systems. Some recent papers that use this approach are [5] [9] [0] and [8]. The main aim of this paper is to study the equations of the Ricci flow of leftinvariant metrics in homogeneous manifolds with two isotropy summands. A complete list of such manifolds is given in [4] but we restrict ourselves to two special classes. Specifically we are interested in the equation restricted to the set of SO n + the left-invariant metrics in the generalized flag manifolds Um SOk + and 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 57M50 and 57S5 and 37C0 and 37M99. 2 LINO GRAMA AND RICARDO M. MARTINS Spn referred sometimes as manifolds of type I and type II respectively. Um Spk This study can be carried over to the other classes of generalized flag manifolds with two isotropy summands as well using the same techniques we develop here and the results obtained are very similar. In the cases we want to study the Ricci flow equation is equivalent to a polynomial differential system. We can study the behavior of such systems at infinity using a method introduced by Poincaré the so called Poincaré Compactification. This method allow us to study global phase portraits for polynomial systems. This paper is organized as follows. In Section we provide a geometrical description of the homogeneous manifolds of types I and II. In Section 3 we describe the Poincaré compactification method. In Section 4 we study the dynamics of the Ricci flow equation at infinity for manifolds of type I and II and in Section 5 we provide a geometrical interpretation for the results obtained in the previous section.. Geometric description of the homogeneous manifold SO n + / Um SOk + and Spn/ Um Spk Let G be a compact connect and semisimple Lie group and denote by g the Lie algebra of G. Let H be a closed connected subgroup of G with Lie algebra h and consider the homogeneous space G/H. The point o = eh is called the origin of the homogeneous space. Since G is compact and semisimple the Cartan-Killing form of g is non-degenerate and negative definite and we will denote by Q the negative of the Cartan-Killing form. In this case we say that the homogeneous space G/H is reductive that is g = h m and AdHm m where m = h. We naturally identify the tangent space at origin o with m. We define the isotropy representation j : H GLm given by jh = Adh m for h H; in this way m is a AdH-module. A Riemannian metric in G/H is left-invariant if the diffeomorphism L a : G/H G/H given by L a gh = agh is an isometry for all a G. A left-invariant metric is completely determined by its value at the origin o. If G/H is reductive with an AdH-invariant decomposition g = h m then there is a natural one-to-one correspondence between the G-invariant Riemannian metrics g on G/H and the AdH-invariant scalar product B on m see [4]. An important class of homogeneous spaces are the generalized flag manifolds or Kähler C-space which are orbits of an element X g by the adjoint action Ad : G g from a compact semisimple Lie group G to g. A classification of the generalized flag manifolds is given in []. In this work we consider the generalized flag manifolds of types I and II that is SO n + Um SOk + and Spn Um Spk.
GLOBAL BEHAVIOR OF THE RICCI FLOW ON HOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS 3 Fix a reductive decomposition of the Lie algebra g for g = so n + or g = spn. In these manifolds the tangent space at origin o splits into two irreducible non-equivalent AdH-submodules. For a complete list of the generalized flag manifolds with this property see [4]. Let g be an invariant metric and B the Ad-invariant scalar product on m corresponding to g. Then B is given by BX Y = QΛX Y where the linear operator Λ : m m is symmetric and positive with respect to the Cartan-Killing form of g. We will denote such an invariant metric g by Λ. Let m = m m be a decomposition of m into irreducible non-equivalent AdH- submodules. A consequence of the Schur s lemma is that Λ mi = λ i Id mi for i = and therefore any invariant scalar product has the form BX Y = λ QX Y m λ QX Y m. For more details about the decomposition of the isotropy representation see [] and []. The Ricci tensor of the an G invariant metric is also an G invariant tensor and is completely determined by its value at the origin o. Proposition. The components of the Ricci tensor of the manifolds of type I and II are given respectively by m r = n + k λ n λ r = n + k n m λ λ λ n λ λ and 3 r = + m k λ n + 4n + 4 λ 4m + 4k + 3 4m + λ r = +. 4n + 4 6n + 6 λ Proof. A direct computation using Proposition 3 of [3]. For more details see [6]. The Ricci flow equation for the left-invariant metrics is given by 4 λi = r i i =. 3. Poincaré Compactification The main idea of the Poincaré Compactification is to pass from the study of a vector field in a noncompact manifold to the study of a vector field in a compact one the sphere. This allow us to better understand its behavior in the infinity. This method dates back to 88 with Poincaré. He was studying the behavior of polynomial planar vector fields at infinity by means of the central projection. We recommend [7] for the detailed description of this method including a n- dimensional version.
4 LINO GRAMA AND RICARDO M. MARTINS Consider the polynomial differential system { ẋ = P 5 x x ẋ = P x x with the associated vector field X = P P. The degree of X is defined as d = max{degp degp }. Let S = {y = y y y 3 R 3 ; y = } be the unit sphere with north hemisphere S+ = {y S ; y 3 > 0} south hemisphere S = {y S ; y 3 < 0} and equator S0 = {y S ; y 3 = 0}. Consider the central projections f + : R S+ and f : R S given by f + x = x x x and f x = x x x where x = + x + x. We shall use coordinates y = y y y 3 for a point y S. As f + and f are homeomorphisms we can identify R with both S+ and S. The maps f + and f define two copies of X Df + xxx in the north hemisphere based on f + x and Df xxx in the south hemisphere based on f x. Note that for x R when x f + x f x S0. This allow us to identify S0 with the infinity of R. Denote by X the vector field on S \ S0 = S+ S. To extend Xy to the sphere S we define the Poincaré compactification of X as pxy = y3 d Xy. Theorem Poincaré [7]. The vector field px extends X analytically to the whole sphere and in such a way that the equator is invariant. If we know the behavior of px around the equator S0 S then we know the behavior of X in the neighborhood of the infinity. The natural projection π of S on y 3 = 0 is called the Poincaré disc and it is denoted by D. If we understand the dynamics of px on D then we completely understand the dynamics of X including at the infinity. We remark that Theorem works just for polynomial vector fields. Now consider the coordinate neighborhoods U i = {y S y i > 0} and V i = {y S y i < 0} for i = 3 and the corresponding coordinate maps φ i : U i R and ψ i : V i R given by yj φ i y y y 3 = y k yj ψ i y y y 3 = y k y i y i y i y i for i j k { 3} with j < k. Denote z = z z the value of φ i y or ψ i y according to the local chart that is being used. Then we have the following expressions for px written in local charts: 6 U : 7 U : z d z d z P z + P z z P z ; z z z z z z z d z z d z P z + P z z P ; z z z z z z 8 U 3 : z d P z z P z z.
GLOBAL BEHAVIOR OF THE RICCI FLOW ON HOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS 5 For the charts V V and V 3 we obtain the same expressions 6 7 and 8 now multiplied by d. We can avoid the factor in the local expressions of px. In this way z d the expression of px is polynomial in each local chart. Note that the singularities at infinity have z = 0. In the next section we shall use the Poincaré compactification to study the Ricci flow equation 4 with r r given by and 3. Our aim is to analyse the global behavior of these differential system in the Poincaré disc. 4. Dynamics of the Ricci flow The analysis will be done in separate subsections with a detailed exposition just for the type I manifolds. For type II manifolds we just present the main result as the proofs are very similar. 4.. Case I: 9 SO n +. Consider the system Um SOk + ẋ = m n + + k n ẏ = n + k n + m n x y y x y xy where n = m + k m > and k. This is the Ricci flow equation for the flag manifold SOn + Um SOk + n = m + k. Lemma. System 9 have two invariant lines: γ t = γ t = t t. m m + k t t Proof. Let Xx y be the vector field associated to system 9 and γt = ta b be an invariant line for system 9. Suppose a 0. Solving the equation Xa b ba = 0 for a b we obtain the desidered result. The case a = 0 has no solution. Lemma. Let f + be the central projection π : S D the natural projection and γ γ as in the Lemma. Then m t π f + γ t = ρtm + k t t π f + γ t = ρt 5t + t 5t + where ρt = m + 4 mk + 4 k + 5 t m 8 t m + 4 t + 4 t mk + 4 t k m + k are invariant curves for px on D. and Proof. This proof is a straightforward calculation.
6 LINO GRAMA AND RICARDO M. MARTINS We can not apply the Poincaré compactification directly to the system 9 because this system is not polynomial. However if we multiply it by ρ = y obtaining the system m 0 ẋ = ẏ = + 4k 8n 4 m 8n 4 x + xy + y n n + k + m n y then 9 and 0 are equivalent in the first quadrant as ρ > 0 for x y > 0 and we can apply the Poincaré compactification to system 0. Recall that for our geometrical analysis we have just to study the dynamics of 9 in the first quadrant. Note also that the line γ 3 t = t 0 is now invariant for 0. To study the singularities at infinity of 0 we should write this system in the local charts of the Poincaré compactification. Note that as d = for the system 0 the expression of px int the charts U U U 3 and V V V 3 are the same except by a minus sign. Chart U : ż = m + k z n + k + n + m z + n m z n ż = z + k n 4 m 4 z z ; n The singularities at infinity that is with z = 0 of with their local behavior are: m + k p = m 0 : stable node; p = 0 : saddle; p 3 = 0 0: stable node. Chart U : ż = m k z n + k + n + m z m + 4 z n n ż = z + k n 4 m 4 z z. n The singularities at infinity of with their local behavior are: m q = 0 p : saddle; q = m + k 0 p : stable node. Using the coordinates maps φ i ψ i i = 3 we obtain that these singularities corresponds to the following points in S : m p = 5m 8m + 4mk + 4k + 4 m + k 5m 8m + 4mk + 4k stable node;
GLOBAL BEHAVIOR OF THE RICCI FLOW ON HOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS 7 p = saddle; 5 5 p 3 = 0 0 stable node. Lemma 3. The invariant lines f + γ f + γ and f + γ 3 satisfy the following: i f + γ 0 = f + γ 0 = f + γ 3 0 = 0; ii lim t f + γ t = p ; iii lim t f + γ t = p ; iv lim t f + γ 3 t = p 3. Proof. The proof follows from taking limits in the expression in Lemma. In Figure we show the singularities and the invariant lines of px on D. We shall restrict ourselves to the first quadrant. R γ p R p γ R 3 γ 3 p 3 Figure. Phase portrait for px on D. The following result is the main theorem for type I manifolds. Theorem. Let R R and R 3 be the distinguished open regions in Figure and ϕ t be the flow of the projection of px to D. a If x 0 y 0 R R γ then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p ; b If x 0 y 0 γ then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p ; c If x 0 y 0 R 3 then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p Case II: 3 Spn. Consider the system Um Spk ẋ = + m k x n + + 4n + 4 y ẏ = 4m + 4k + 3 4n + 4 4m + x 6n + 6 y where n = m+k m and k 3. This is the Ricci flow equation for the manifold Spn Um Spk n = m + k. The invariant lines in this case are γ t = t t. As in the Case I put γ 3 t = t 0. t 4 4k + m + t and γ t = m +
8 LINO GRAMA AND RICARDO M. MARTINS 4m + The singularities of px in the positive quadrant of D 4k + m + are p = ρ ρ stable node where ρ = 0m + 36m + 6k + 6mk + 8k + 7 p = saddle and p 3 = 0 stable node. The analogous of Theorem for this case is given bellow. Note that the statement of Theorems and 3 are the same but the elements involved in Theorem 3 are as defined in this subsection. Theorem 3. Let R R and R 3 be the distinguished open regions in Figure and ϕ t be the flow of the projection of px to D. a If x 0 y 0 R R γ then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p ; b If x 0 y 0 γ then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p ; c If x 0 y 0 R 3 then lim t ϕ t x 0 y 0 = p Geometrical properties of the Ricci flow In this section we derive some results on the convergence of the Ricci flow in the Region R 3 see Theorems 3 and Figure. We begin with an auxiliar lemma. Lemma 4 [3]. Let G/H be a flag manifold with two isotropy summands. Decompose the Lie algebra of G as g = h m m. The the following relations hold: [m m ] m [m m ] m h [m m ] h. It is well know that a flag manifold is a fiber bundle over a symmetric space see [6]. To explicit exhibit this fibration consider the subalgebra k = h m and let K be the corresponding connected Lie group. Follows from Lemma 4 that [k k] k [k m ] m [m m ] k. Therefore the decomposition g = k m is a symmetric decomposition of g and G/K is a symmetric space. Now we consider the fibration K/H G/H G/K. The base space G/K is isotropically irreducible so any G-invariant scalar product in G/K is a multiple of the canonical metric that is B base = α QX Y m. Therefore in a invariant metric Λ = λ λ in G/H λ is the horizontal part tangent to the base and λ is the vertical part tangent to the fiber. Using the classification of symmetrical spaces see [] and comparing the dimensions we now study each case. Case I: G = SO n + H = Um SOk +. The dimensions of the irreducible submodules as calculated in [4] are dim m = mk + and dim m = mm ; thus K = SOm SOk + and the corresponding fibration is SOm Um SO n + Um SOk + SO n + SOm SOk +. Now from Theorem and Figure one can see that λ t 0 when t where λ t is the horizontal part of the invariant metric gt that evolves under the Ricci flow. In other words the diameter of the base converges to zero when
GLOBAL BEHAVIOR OF THE RICCI FLOW ON HOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS 9 t. Case II: G = Spn H = Um Spk. The dimensions of the irreducible submodules as calculated in [4] are dim m = 4mk and dim m = mm + ; thus K = Spm Spk and the corresponding fibration is Spm Um Sp n Um Spk Sp n Spm Spk. Now from Theorem 3 and Figure one can see that λ t 0 when t where λ t is the horizontal part of the invariant metric gt that evolves under the Ricci flow. In other words the diameter of the base converges to zero when t. The following result independently obtained in [4] and [6] characterize the invariant Einstein metrics for the manifolds of types I and II. Theorem 4. A generalized flag manifold with two isotropy summands admits up to scale exactly two invariant Einstein metrics: one Kähler and the other non-kähler. We summarize Theorems 3 and the discussion of this section in the following result. Theorem 5. With the notation of Theorems and 3 let g 0 be a invariant metric in the manifolds of type I or II. Remember R R R 3 γ γ in Figure. Then the following holds: a If g 0 R R γ then g is a Einstein non-kähler metric. b If g 0 γ then g is a Kähler-Einstein metric. c For g 0 R 3 consider the natural fibration from a flag manifold in a symmetric space G/H G/K. Then the Ricci flow gt with g0 = g 0 evolve in such a way that the diameter of the base of this fibration converges to zero when t. Remark. The Einstein metrics described in Theorem 5 are the same obtained in [4] and [6]. Acknowledgments The authors would like to thank Prof. Caio Negreiros for the useful comments. References [] D.
