1 Nuclear Physics A (8) Nuclear Physics A Baseline for the cumulants of net-roton distributions at SAR arxiv:8.9v [nucl-ex] 6 Nov Abstract Xiaofeng Luo a Bedangadas Mohanty b Nu Xu ac a Institute of Particle Physics and Key Laboratory of Quark&Leton Physics (MOE) Central China Normal University Wuhan 79 China. b School of Physical Sciences National Institute of Science Education and Research Bhubaneswar 7 India c Nuclear Science Division Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Berkeley CA 97 USA. We resent a systematic comarison between the recently measured cumulants of the net-roton distributions by SAR for -% central Au+Au collisions at s NN =7.7- GeV and two kinds of ossible baseline measure the Poisson and Binomial baselines. hese baseline measures are assuming that the roton and anti-roton distributions indeendently follow Poisson statistics or Binomial statistics. he higher order cumulant net-roton data are observed to deviate from all the baseline measures studied at 9.6 and 7 GeV. We also comare the net-roton with net-baryon fluctuations in UrQMD and AMP model and convert the net-roton fluctuations to net-baryon fluctuations in AMP model by using a set of formula. Keywords: QCD Critical Point Higher Moments Heavy-ion Collision Quantum Chromodynamics. Introduction In the hase diagram of Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD-theory of strong interactions) it is conjectured on the basis of theoretical calculations that there will be a QCD Critical Point (CP) at high temerature () and non-zero baryonic chemical otential (µ B ) []. Since the ab initio Lattice QCD calculation meet the notorious sign roblem there are still large uncertainties in theoretically determining the location of the CP in the QCD hase diagram [ ]. Different QCD based models also give very different results []. Finding the existence of a CP exerimentally will be an excellent test of QCD theory in the non-erturbative region and a milestone of exloring the QCD hase diagram []. his is one of the main goals of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) Program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). By tuning the colliding energy of gold nucleus from s NN = GeV down to 7.7 GeV one can access a broad region of the QCD Phase Diagram (<µ B < MeV) [6]. Due to the high sensitivity to the correlation length (ξ) of the dynamical system [7 8 9] and direct connection to the suscetibilities in theoretical calculations for examle the Lattice QCD calculations [ ] higher moments of multilicity distributions of conserved quantities such as net-baryon net-charge and net-strangeness have been alied to search for the QCD critical oint in heavyion collision exeriments []. As the correlation length will diverge near the CP the non-monotonic variation of the moments of multilicity distribution with resected to the colliding energy is the golden signature of the CP. o extract the CP induced exerimental signal it is crucial to understand the non-cp hysics effects in heavy-ion collisions on the exerimental observable such as the effects of conservations for charges (electric baryon number and strangeness number) finite size resonance decay and hadronic scattering. Moreover roer baseline needs to be constructed for exerimental observables to search for the CP. xfluo@mail.ccnu.edu.cn

In this aer we will make the comarison between the baselines (Poisson Binomial) and recently measured cumulants of net-roton distribution ublished by the SAR Collaboration and discuss the deviations of the data from the baselines. In addition the results from the AMP [] and UrQMD [] models will be discussed.. Results and Discussion Recently the SAR Collaboration has ublished the beam energy deendence of higher moments of the netroton (as roxy of net-baryon []) multilicity distributions from RHIC BES Au+Au collision data []. he rotons and anti-rotons are identified with ionization energy loss in the ime Projection Chamber (PC) of the SAR detector within transverse momentum range.< <.8 GeV/c and at mid-raidity y <.. Several analysis techniques [6 7] have been alied such as defining a new collision centrality with charged article multilicity within large seudo-raidity ( η < ) and excluding the article of interest used in the analysis centrality bin width correction (CBWC) and efficiency correction. hese address the effects of auto-correlation volume fluctuation and finite tracking efficiency in the moments calculation. Figure shows the mean of the net-roton roton and antiroton distributions are almost linearly increasing with the average number of articiant nucleons for each energy. he different mean values of the roton and anti-roton distributions at each energy are determined by the interlay between baryon number air roduction and baryon stoing effects. At high energies the air roduction rocess dominates the roduction of rotons and anti-rotons at mid-raidity while at low energies the effect of baryon stoing is more imortant than at high energies. In the following we discuss some exectations for cumulants of net-roton multilicity distributions from some basic distributions.. Poisson : If the rotons and anti-rotons are indeendently distributed as Poissonian distributions. hen the net-roton multilicity will follow the Skellam distribution which is exressed as: P(N)=( M M ) N/ I N ( M M ) ex[ (M + M )] where the N is the net-roton number I N (x) is a modified Bessel function M and M are the mean number of rotons and anti-rotons as shown in Fig.. he various order cumulants (C n ) are closely connected with the moments e.g. C =< N>= M C =< ( N) >= σ C =< ( N) >= Sσ C =< ( N) > <( N) > =κσ where the N=N <N> theσ S andκ are variance skewness and kurtosis resectively. hen we construct Sσ=C /C = (M M )/(M + M ) and κσ = C /C = which rovides the Poisson exectations for the various order cumulants/moments of netroton distributions. he only inut arameters of the Poisson baseline for cumulants of net-roton distributions are the mean values of the roton and anti-roton distributions.. Binomial/Negative Binomial: If the rotons and anti-rotons are indeendently distributed as Binomial or Negative Binomial distributions (BD/NBD). hen various order cumulants of the net-roton distributions can be
3 Xiaofeng Luo Bedangadas Mohanty Nu Xu/Nuclear Physics A (8) exressed in term of cumulants of the roton and anti-roton distributions: Cn net = Cn+( ) n Cn. he first four order cumulants can be written as: C x=σ x=ε x µ x C x= S xσ x=ε x µ x (ε x ) C x=κ xσ x=ε x µ x (6ε x 6ε x +) whereε x =σ x /µ xµ x = M x M x is the mean values of rotons or anti-rotons distributions x= or.ε x < means the underlying distributions of rotons or anti-rotons are Binomial distributions whileε x > gives Negative Binomial distributions. he inut arameters for BD/NBD exectations are the measured mean and variance of the roton and anti-roton distributions. C Au+Au -% SAR Poisson Eff. Corrected - C.< <.8 (GeV/c) y <. C Au+Au -% SAR Binomial Eff. Corrected - C.< <.8 (GeV/c) y < C C C C Figure. Energy deendence of cumulants (C C ) of net-roton distributions for % Au+Au collisions [8]. he error bars are statistical only. he dashed lines in the left anels are the Poisson exectations while those are the Binomial exectations in the right anels. Figure shows the comarison between the cumulants of net-roton distributions and the Poisson/Binomial baselines. For the Poisson case when the order of cumulant increases the deviations of the data from the Poisson exectations for net-roton and roton increase. Largest deviations are found for C at 9.6 and 7 GeV. For the Binomial case the agreements ersist u to the third order while it fails to describe the net-roton and roton fourth order cumulants at 9.6 and 7 GeV. It is understandable that the Binomial baseline describes the data better as it uses the variance as an inut arameter in addition to the mean values and as the variance is correlated with higher order cumulants. he cumulants of anti-roton distributions can be described by the Poisson and Binomial baselines very well. More baseline discussions from Hadronic Resonance Gas model and transort model UrQMD can be found in [9]. he findings are consistent with ours. As we discussed that the binomial distributions can be used as baseline comarison for net-roton multilicity distributions an alternative interretation based on the negative binomial distribution was given in []. he negative binomial distributions used there is not aroriate for the net-roton multilicity distributions. he SAR exeriment measures net-roton fluctuations instead of net-baryon fluctuations and one may want to know to what extend they can reflect the net-baryon fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. herefore fig. demonstrates the comarison between moments of net-roton and net-baryon distributions from AMP and UrQMD model calculations. We can find that theκσ of net-baryon distributions are systematically lower than the net-roton results. he differences are even bigger for low energies than high energies. here are two ossible effects for the difference between net-roton and net-baryon fluctuations one is the non inclusion of neutrons in the net-roton fluctuations and the other one is the nucleon isosin exchanging rocess due to resonance formation via π and nπ interaction the so called isosin randomization which will modify the net-roton fluctuations after the chemical freezeout. Asakawa and Kitazawa have derived a set of formulas [] to convert the measured net-roton cumulants to the net-baryon cumulants by taking into account the above two effects. he converting formulas for various order net-baryon cumulants can be written as: C net B = C net C net B = C net C tot C net B = 8C net (C C )+6Cnet C net B = 6C net + 6C tot 6(C + C )+8Cnet + C tot 6C tot

Within large uncertainties they are consistent with the net-baryon results directly calculated with the AMP model.. Au+Au : -% Au+Au : -% σ σ κ κ. UrQMD Net-baryon S NN (GeV) -.< <.8 (GeV) y <. Energy deendence ofκσ of net-roton and net-baryon distributions for -% Au+Au collisions from the UrQMD (left) and the AMP string melting model (right). he results marked as solid black stars are based on theoretical calculations using Asakawa and Kitazawa s formula. he error calculation is based on the Bootstra method.. Summary We have comared the energy deendence of cumulants of net-roton distributions in -% central Au+Au collisions with Poisson and Binomial baselines. he Binomial baseline describes the data better than the Poisson baseline. he largest deviation is observed for the fourth order net-roton cumulant (C ) from Poisson and Binomial baselines in the most central collisions at 9.6 and 7 GeV. A roer comarison of the exerimental measurements to QCD calculations is needed to extract the exact hysics rocess that leads to deviation of the data from the baselines resented. Differences between net-roton and net-baryon fluctuations are observed in the AMP and UrQMD models. Finally we use the A&K s formulas to convert the net-roton fluctuations in the AMP model to net-baryon fluctuations which is consistent with the net-baryon results directly calculated from the AMP model.
