1 Tropical Activity Atlantic Hurricane Florence (CAT 4) Located 530 miles southeast of Cape Fear, NC Moving WNW at 17 mph; maximum sustained winds 130 mph Expected to slow down considerably by late Thursday into Friday Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles Tropical-storm-force winds extend 175 miles A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for: South Santee River South Carolina to Duck North Carolina; Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, including the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for: Edisto Beach South Carolina to South Santee River South Carolina; North of Duck North Carolina to the North Carolina/Virginia border A Hurricane Warning is in effect for: South Santee River South Carolina to Duck North Carolina; Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds A Hurricane Watch is in effect for: Edisto Beach South Carolina to South Santee River South Carolina The Hurricane National Center said Florence could bring storm surges upwards of nine feet in most areas across the shoreline and up to 13 feet in areas between Cape Fear and Cape Lookout, North Carolina. They also forecast up to 40 inches of rainfall in some isolated areas of the Carolinas. Evacuations began on Tuesday morning as people living near the coasts of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia fled inland. Traffic patterns were altered to help speed up evacuation efforts, including lane reversals on several major roads in South Carolina. VA: Mandatory evacuations for Zone A in Hampton Roads SC: Mandatory evacuations for six counties, all other orders rescinded NC: Mandatory evacuations for the Outer Banks Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights in the Southeast ahead of Hurricane 1
2 Florence. Amtrak also was curtailing service in the region. Nationwide, more than 575 flights have been canceled from Wednesday through Friday, flighttracking service FlightAware counted as of 8:10 a.m. ET. Several airports along the coast have said schedules would be reduced Wednesday, with no flights at all expected to operate on Thursday or Friday. That includes South Carolina s Charleston International Airport, the busiest along the coast of the Carolinas. Officials there said flights would wind down Wednesday and would not resume at least until Saturday. Atlantic Tropical Storm Isaac Located 450 miles E of Martinique Moving W at 15 mph; maximum sustained winds are 60 mph Tropical storm force winds extend 105 miles A little weaker as it moves toward the Lesser Antilles Atlantic Disturbance 1 (Invest 95L) Located over the south-central Gulf of Mexico Heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected across portions of Texas, and Louisiana later this week Formation chance through 48 hours: Medium (60%) Formation chance through 5 days: Medium (60%) Atlantic Disturbance 2 Located several hundred miles WSW of the Azores Formation chance through 48 hours: Medium (40%) Formation chance through 5 days: Medium (50% Atlantic Disturbance 3 Located near Bermuda Formation chance through 48 hours: Low (near 0%) Formation chance through 5 days: Low (20%) 2
3 Central Pacific Tropical Storm Olivia 125 miles E of Kahului, HI; 215 miles E of Honolulu, HI Moving W at 8 mph; maximum sustained winds 45 mph Tropical storm force winds extend 90 miles Some weakening is forecast, but expected to remain a tropical storm as it moves over the Hawaiian Islands today Tropical Storm Warnings in effect for Maui, Hawaii & Oahu Counties Western Pacific Typhoon Mangkhut Located 475 miles W of Guam The island of Rota, which bore the brunt of Typhoon Mangkhut late Monday and was reportedly the strongest typhoon to hit the island since 2002, was in shambles in the wake of the Category 2 typhoon that brought maximum sustained winds of over 100 miles per hour (160.9 kilometers per hour) to the island. Saipan Tribune, which flew out to the island of Rota yesterday to scope out the damage left by Typhoon Mangkhut, found widespread damage in Rota s main village of Songsong. Over 40 individuals who completely lost their homes are currently seeking shelter at the Rota Office on Aging and are not sure where they will go if they can no longer seek shelter there. Declaration Request Iowa (Appeal) Gov. Kim Reynolds on Tuesday appealed the Federal Emergency Management Agency's denial of federal assistance for individuals affected by flooding and severe weather in early July. FEMA denied Iowa's call for federal individual assistance in late August. In its denial letter, FEMA said it had determined the impact to individuals and households was not severe enough to permit federal help. The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management worked closely with local emergency management agencies to determine if there were additional damage and effects caused by the flooding and severe weather after FEMA stated its denial of Reynolds' request, her office said. We ve been able to document a substantial increase in the number of homes that sustained major damage from the flooding, Reynolds said. In our appeal, we presented a much clearer picture of the true impact of the flooding on citizens and communities, as well as the cumulative effect this disaster and the July tornadoes have had on our state. Updated damage assessments show a total of 18 homes destroyed, 164 homes with major damage, 1,363 with minor damage and 4,630 homes affected. 3
