1 Kosciusko REMC Script August 18, 2014 It is 7:42 PM. The National Weather Service has just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for most of northern Indiana. A monster sized supercell with heavy rotation has just wreaked havoc on the greater Chicago area and has set its sights eastward. In it s path- Kosciusko County, Indiana. Kosciusko REMC staff has already gone home for the evening after a long day. By 8:45 the storm has arrived, torrential rain, wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour, and hail the size of golf balls are relentlessly pounding Kosciusko County and its residents with all the fury the storm can muster. And then Blackout. A substation blinks red on the map, and in an instant, over 5,500 people are without power. Before staff has a chance to relax with their families, they are immediately called back to help. Kosciusko REMC s state-of-the-art facility known as the War- Room gives Kosciusko REMC staff a real-time analysis of Kosciusko County s entire power grid. War Room screens show a map of the entire service territory, with red dots to indicate which services are out of power. The Outage Management System predicts the location and cause of outages by tracking the number of outages back to a common point, such as a transformer, switch, or substation. [Interview of War-Room staff talking about the facility] Within minutes of the outage, Kosciusko REMC s crew of linemen are loaded rolling out of the (x-thousand square foot) facility and ready to tackle the issue head-on. Using information from the Geographic Information System in the War

2 Room, linemen know exactly which tools and equipment are necessary to rebuild the grid. [Radio blurbs] [linemen interview about preparation to head into the storm to fix power] Meanwhile, away from the mercy of the elements, communication with members is already taking place. Kosciusko REMC has a team waiting to intercept calls and re-assure their members that Kosciusko REMC is on top of the situation and power is on its way. *Record audio and B-roll of phone call CSR: Thanks for calling KREMC, how may I help You? Member: I have a downed power line in my backyard, when will someone be out to fix it? CSR: Crews have been dispatched and will be at your house as soon as possible. Meanwhile, stay away from these lines as they are still active. If you would like to stay updated, you can check our Facebook and Twitter pages or tune into the radio. Out in the storm, Linemen get to work checking substations, striving to get the most members out of the dark as soon as possible. [Insert another linemen interview about preparation to head into the storm to fix power] Once the substation is restored, crews head away from the city to reach those in outlying locations that are still without power. They replace poles, check fuses, and clear broken lines, all while fighting against the harsh climate created by the very heavy storm season in northern Indiana. In these conditions, electrocution is a very real threat. [Insert linemen interview about dangers they face/sacrifices they have to make] In spite of the risks and sacrifices, the brave team of men and women plunges ahead in a classic man vs. nature fight to restore power before the county truly feels the weight of its loss.

3 [Insert linemen interview why do you do what you do? ] Because of the intense dedication and selfless sacrifice of the Kosciusko REMC team, lights begin to come back on in Kosciusko County. The storm has passed, and power has been restored. [Interview talking about how it takes a team ] [Interview with CEO about the mission of KREMC and joys of seeing power restored] Closing tag TBD. Tweets to have pop up at bottom throughout Video (can also find these on Twitter all from July 1): #info Storms pushing through Kosciusko County have caused power outages for over 5500 KREMC members scattered throughout service territory. #info KREMC reminds everyone to stay away from downed lines, and call us to report an outage or downed power lines at #info down to about 2,000 outages scattered throughout service territory. We are down to about 500 outages at this United REMC and Northeastern sent crews to help! Thank you! #info Currently 412 outages. Crews are replacing poles and clearing trees from lines. We will work until all power is restored. #info Progress! We are down to about 20 outages and counting! #info All KREMC members are back on! Crews are still working to replace broken poles and clear trees.
