3 Matching winter tires You should have at least 2 matching winter tires on the primary drive axle, but recommend using 4 matching tires on the four outside corners of the vehicle - even when driving a 4X4 vehicle. Mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal construction and size compromises stability, and should be avoided. 3.5 mm tread Tires should have 3.5 mm of tread remaining to be considered winter tires. Tires that are worn have reduced traction and should not be used in winter weather. Air pressure Maintaining proper air pressure extends tread life and improves safety. Tire pressure decreases as temperatures drop, so have the pressure checked at least once a month, when the tires are cold. CHAIN CLASSIFICATION & SIZING ABOUT WINTER TIRES The 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol on the side of the tire. These winter tires offer the best traction on snow and ice, and in cold weather. The minimum clearances specified must be maintained around spring clips, spring bolts, fenders, braces, splash pans, fuel lines, brake lines, brake controls, and wherever necessary. Tire size must be known in order to select a tire chan of correct fit. For passenger cars, vans, and small pick-up trucks, it is important to check the owner s manual. The restricted wheel clearances in most of today s downsized and front drive vehicles may require the use of SAE Class S tire chains, as noted in the manuals.

Our chains will accommodate the vast majority of tire sizes available. However instances do occur which warrant confirming the dimensions of a tire to ensure the chain will fit. QCCanada s sales staff are trained in how to design a chain for any size tire. IMPERIAL SIZES Imperial sizing is normally expressed in two ways. Tires indicating the height/width and rim size in inches look like this. Eg: 31x10.5x15 = 31 (Height) X 10.5 (Width) X15 (Wheel diameter) Tires indicating width and rim size, look like this. Eg: 11R24.5 Sizes with only two figures are missing the sidewall height of the tire. Although many common truck sizes are standardized you may need to consult with manufacturers to confirm tire dimensions for specialty sizes. The first number indicates the width of the tire in millimetres. The second figure represents the height of the side wall expressed as a percentage of the first figure. For example; 315/80R22.5 the side wall is 80% of the tire width or 315 X 80%=252mm. The final figure is the diameter of the wheel in inches. 7 TIRE CHAIN REGULATIONS NORTH AMERICAN TIRE CHAIN REGULATIONS CONTACT INFORMATION AND LINKS Several Provinces and States have chain laws in place that require traction devices to be carried/or used at specific times of the year or certain road conditions. See the links below. Failure to do so can result in fines and/ or other penalties. It s not mandatory to use tire chains in a number of Provinces or States. Check the Province or State Depart of Transportation for the requirements or regulatory changes. Cable and tire chains are legal to use in every Province or State in North America. They are considered temporary and installed only when needed. Some Provinces and States will limit the use/or outlaw studded tires because the studs are considered a permanent device and contribute to the damage of the road and highway surfaces. Chain law regulations may change at any time.

8 TIRE CHAIN REGULATIONS -CALIFORNIA STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (Caltrans) Chain Requirements Revised 12/15 V ehicles are permitted in chain control areas when equipped with chains or Automatic Traction Device (ATD) as indicated. Tire traction devices are defined in the California Vehicle Code (VC) Section 605 which include conventional link-type tire chains and cable chains, as well as other less conventional devices. When the term chains is used here, it means any tire traction device (not necessarily link type chain) which meets the requirements of (VC) Section 605. Vehicles with cable chains as well as other less conventional devices are legal in California. However, these may be restricted at times due to local conditions. Minimum legal tread depth for mud and snow tires is 6/32 of an inch. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP), reserve the right to prohibit any vehicle from entering a chain control area when it s determined that the traction devices do not meet the requirements of (VC) section 605. 9 TIRE CHAIN REGULATIONS -WASHINGTON STATE Minimum Chain RequirementAll vehicles over 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight (GVW) shall carry a minimum of two (2) extra chains for use in the event that road conditions require the use of more chains or in the event that chains in use are broken or otherwise made useless, WAC (2) (f). Approved chains for vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight shall have at least two side chains to which are attached sufficient cross chains of hardened metal so that at least one cross chain is in contact with the road surface at all times. Plastic chains shall not be allowed. The Washington State Patrol may approve other devices as chains if the devices are equivalent to regular chains in performance (cable chains allowable). All vehicles and combinations of vehicles over 10,000 pounds shall carry sufficient tire chains to meet the requirements from November 1 to April 1 of each year or at other times when chains are required for such vehicles: Diagram of proper chain placement for different axle configurations shown below. Nordic chains use a blend of alloys and a unique heat treatment process to achieve a tool hard surface that avoids the brittleness found in traditional case hardened products.
