6 Lighting Policy When severe weather threatens and lightning is involved, it is imperative that we take immediate action. The following protocol for lightning safety is based on guidelines laid out by the NATA and accepted by the NCAA. Weather conditions will be monitored through the internet, radar, and Storm. Coaches will be updated as weather approaches (15 miles). This time should be used to prepare to clear the facility. Once notified that a storm is too close (8 miles), all teams must clear the field and seek shelter. Teams must remain inside until weather has cleared and 30 minutes have passed since the last strike. It is the responsibility of the coach and the athletic trainer to check local weather forecasts for approaching severe weather and/or severe weather warnings. Postpone or suspend activity if a thunderstorm appears imminent before or during an activity or contest (regardless of whether lightning is seen or thunder heard) until the hazard has passed. Signs of imminent thunderstorm activity are darkening clouds, high winds, and thunder or lightning activity. If a team is on the field unsupervised by the athletic trainer, it is the head coach's responsibility to make the call to get off of the field. However, if the athletic trainer comes out and deems that the environment is unsafe, it is their duty to postpone activity. Once the danger has passed, the athletic trainer will contact the head coach for safe return to activity. Seeking a safe structure
