1 April 2016 Temperature and Precipitation Summary Arizona Climate Summary May 2016 Summary of conditions for April 2016 April 1 st 15 th : April 1 st saw the tail end of a low pressure system move out of the state bringing 0.02 of rain to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The rest of the state was dry as high pressure began to build into the Southwest. The high pressure remained in place until the 6 th. In the southwest deserts, temperatures climbed from the upper-80s to the upper-90s that week. At the higher elevations, daytime temperature rose from the mid-50s to the mid-60s, and nighttime temperatures increased from around 14 o F to around 20 o F under the high pressure. On the 6 th, a low pressure system passing well north of Arizona brushed across the northern counties dropping 0.24 of rain on Bellemont, outside Flagstaff. The 7 th was dry statewide as high pressure briefly returned, but a cut-off low pressure system off the coast of southern California finally brought widespread rain from the 8 th through the 12 th. The system was too warm for snow. Storm totals included 0.72 at Davis Monthan AFB, 0.55 at Flagstaff Airport, 0.46 at Grand Canyon Airport, 0.69 at Kingman Airport, 0.84 at Nogales Airport, 0.88 at Deer Valley Airport, 0.51 at Sky Harbor Airport, 0.71 at Tucson Airport, 0.52 at Window Rock, 0.32 at Yuma, 0.42 at Payson, 0.41 at Prescott, 0.75 at Seligman, and 0.50 at Williams. This was a warm storm with daytime temperatures in the low-80s in the southwest deserts and upper-40s to lower-50s at the higher elevations. High pressure briefly returned again, bringing dry conditions statewide on the 13 th and 14 th. April 15 th 30 th : Another low pressure system moved across the western US on the 15 th through the 17 th. This was a colder storm and brought snowfall to northern Arizona. Canyon de Chelly had 0.2, the north rim of the Grand Canyon had 2.0, Bellemont had 5.5 and the Flagstaff Airport had 3.2. Rainfall totals ranged from 0.02 at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon to 0.38 at Petrified Forest. Central and southern Arizona had no precipitation from this storm. By the 19 th, high pressure returned to the southwest ahead of the next storm system that developed off the coast of Washington. The high brought dry conditions to all parts of the state and temperatures climbed back near 100 o F in the southwest deserts. Peak temperatures included 99 o F at Bouse, 98 o F at Eloy, 97 o F at Phoenix, Youngtown, East Mesa, and Yuma, 96 o F at Tucson, 79 o F at Prescott, and 70 o F at Flagstaff. By the 23 rd, the low pressure system had moved over northern California and temperatures in Arizona dropped by 10 degrees F from the previous day. By the 26 th, temperatures had dropped another 8 degrees F as the low pressure system brought cold air and precipitation to the northern half of the state, with Flagstaff receiving 0.2 of snow. The storm was quickly followed by a second low pressure system that moved across Arizona from the 28 th through the 30 th. The north rim of the Grand Canyon received 1.7 of snow and Flagstaff and Navajo National Monument each had a trace. A series of low pressure systems moved across the southwest through May 3 rd, bringing scattered showers, often heavy, to central and northern Arizona. Totals through April 30 th included 0.19 at Flagstaff, 0.57 at the Grand Canyon Airport, 0.46 at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, 0.68 at Kingman, 0.39 at Page, 0.30 at Prescott, 0.55 at Navajo National Monument, and 0.37 at Williams. 8 The minimum temperatures ranged from 7 o F at Pinetop to 56 o F at Ehrenberg. The lowest maximum temperature of 60 o F was recorded at Snowslide Canyon, while the highest maximum temperature was 101 o F at Havasu. The highest rainfall amounts were 3.51 at Beaver Dam, 2.88 at Golden Valley, and 2.80 at Snowslide Canyon.. The lowest average dew point was 21 o F at Show Low and the highest was 47 o F at Yuma. The highest peak wind gust was 46 mph at Desert Ridge. Average wind speeds range from 3 mph at Phoenix Greenway and Phoenix Encanto in central Arizona to 14 mph at Show Low. 8

9 T April 2016 The highest average minimum temperature was 62 o F at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, Glendale, Laughlin and Ehrenberg, and the lowest average minimum temperature was 23 o F at Sunrise Mountain. The highest average maximum temperature was 92 o F at Ehrenberg and Parker and lowest average maximum temperature was 47 o F at Snowslide Canyon. 9

11 April April minimum temperatures ranged from 8 o F cooler to 6 o F warmer than normal across the state, with central Gila County 8 o F warmer than normal. Western Pima County was the cool spot. Daytime temperatures were within 3 o F of normal with cooler than normal conditions on the Colorado Plateau and warmer than normal conditions to the southwest in Yuma and La Paz counties. April precipitation was below average across the Mogollon Rim and in the southeast, and wetter than normal in the western half of the state and on the Colorado Plateau. The wettest part of the state was the northwest where the storms crossed into the state. 11

13 Calendar Year 2016 Calendar year minimum temperatures varied from 3 o F warmer to 2 o F colder than normal across Arizona. Gila County saw temperatures 6 o F warmer than normal, and western Pima County was 5 o F colder than normal. Daytime temperatures were 1 to 5 o F warmer than average statewide. Precipitation is now below 70% of normal across most of the state, below 50% of normal across Navajo, Apache Yuma, southern Mohave and western Pinal counties. Northern Mojave County is wetter than normal. 13

15 2016 Water Year The Water Year minimum temperatures are still within 2 o F of normal across most of the state with the highest departures above normal in southern Mohave County, and the greatest departures below normal in western Pima County. Daytime temperatures are generally 1-3 o F warmer than normal, with a slightly cooler area in western Pinal and southern Navajo counties. Precipitation is above normal on the Colorado Plateau, in eastern Coconino and central Navajo counties, as well as in central Pinal and eastern Pima counties. Southern Mohave, western Pima, and most of Maricopa and Apache counties have received less than 70% of normal precipitation. El Niño did not produce the expected precipitation this winter and is weakening significantly. The next two months are our driest months of the year, though the Climate Prediction Center seasonal outlook for May and for May through July expects wetter than normal conditions. 15
