2012 Hurricane Season Summary for Eastern Canada Impacts and Operational Notes John Parker and Chris Fogarty Canadian Hurricane Centre, Meteorological Service of Canada 2 April 2013

Storms affecting Canadian territory in 2012 Page 2

Storm and bulletin summary

Track/Satellite - Hurricane Chris Page 4

Synoptic summary formed around 35 o N from a non-tropical low associated with a frontal system A second non-tropical low formed to the south of PTS Chris on the 22 nd interacting with it in a manner which imparted an eastward motion on the post-tropical low followed by dissipation. Being a purely marine storm, there were no impacts over land. Only moderate north and northeast winds (15 kts) were measured at the Tail-of-the-Bank buoy at 42.9 o N 51.5 o W.

Grand Banks low July 24/25 NOAA POES

storm relative vertical shear only ~5 kts ASCAT

Operational Notes on the Grand Banks low Program Head of the CHC and marine forecaster in the Newfoundland regional office exchanged communication on the feature ( / instant messaging) Agreed on wording to describe the low Page 8

Track/Satellite - Hurricane Leslie Page 9

Leslie and associated stagnated flow with frontal-related flooding over Nova Scotia

Impacts/Notes Slow motion of storm large degree of uncertainty in track prolonged media interest Highlighted the upstream impact of a TC on mobility of mid-latitude fronts predecessor-type rainfall event (PRE) in Nova Scotia Heavy wind event in eastern Newfoundland Coastal wave/surge impacts minimized owing to low tide cycle TS warning issued for 12 public forecast zones in Newfoundland - ~90% materialized successfully and ~80% rainfall warnings correct. Page 12

Leslie & front-related impacts Truro, NS

Track/Satellite - Hurricane Rafael Page 14

Rafael s surface winds NOAA-15 rain rate 1620Z 17 Oct ASCAT ocean winds of Rafael with frontal feature ~15Z 17 Oct

Impacts/Notes A hybrid type system with large frontal-type features seen in satellite-based imagery No significant impact over land other than large swell and rapid water level fluctuations Only 3 rd time in CHC history that alert issued for rapid water level fluctuations (meteorological tsunami) Example of communication challenge: Page 16

Everyone s a forecaster these days here s an example of how confusion can arise (popular buy-and-sell website) 4 days before nearest to Newfoundland:!

incident ~17-s swell 4-7 m Offshore bathymetry of The Grand Banks (m) wave impacts km north of track Real-time analysis of track details for determining likelihood of meteorological tsunami

Track/Satellite - Hurricane Sandy Page 20

Primary fields (GEM-REG 00HR, every 6 hours) 3-day period: 28, 29, 30 Oct HT / vort SLP / TH 700 HT / RH 850 HT / temp

A few notes on impacts Large-scale event, requiring myriad of weather alerts and necessitated communication between various government branches and forecast offices Large impact over Great Lakes not frequented by TCrelated wind events

Canadian Impacts Most of the impacts in Canada were a result of the strong and gusty winds which peaked at over 100 km/h in some areas (downed trees, some structural damage etc ) Winds lead to nearly 200,000 customers without power from Ontario to Atlantic Canada Sandy was blamed for two fatalities in Canada one in Toronto when a large sign was blown down and struck a pedestrian. The second occurred in Sarnia, Ontario, when a hydroelectric worker was electrocuted during the poststorm cleanup Photo: Toronto Sun Photo: Canadian Press

Various wind damage in Ontario Sarnia, ON hotel roof Toronto, ON awning collapse

Canadian Impacts Heavy surf was reported in Atlantic Canada and in the Great Lakes area particularly in Lake Huron Cargo ship travel through Lake St. Clair and the adjacent waterways connecting Lake Erie and Lake Huron was disrupted as was airline travel Rainfall was not a significant issue in Canada as the greatest measured amount directly attributed to Sandy was 55 mm in Quebec Photo: National Post
