1 Key Words 20 Uenuku and rainbow Rainbows Uenuku Rangi 1. Wow a spherical rainbow, prism exclaimed Renata. disperses ma 2. The Rainbow ROY G BIV God is Uenuku. replied his Dad, Stephen, whero karaka As a man, he fell in love with a morning mist kowhai maiden. He tricked her into staying after kakariki kikorangi dawn and when she found out, she left. poroporo Uenuku was very sad and searched for her. mnemonic Rangi (the Sky Father) turned him into a rainbow so he could join his family in the sky. So when it rains, you see Uenuku, the God of Rainbows. 3. Nice story, Dad. We learnt rain only gives rainbows when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front. Each raindrop acts like a prism. The prism disperses (separates) the white (ma) light into seven colours and we see the rainbow. 4. I remember the order of colours as ROY G BIV. For Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, said Stephen. 5. Yes, we learnt the Maori names. Whero is red and karaka is orange. Kowhai is yellow. Kakariki is green. Kikorangi is blue. Poroporo is for purple (Indigo and Violet together), unfortunately WKKKKP isn t as good a memory aid (mnemonic) as ROY G BIV is continued Renata. 6. You could use a memory-aid-story. For example -The ma white clouds floated and a rainbow appeared. A wheroblooded man sat eating karaka fruit looking out at the kowhai in flower. A cheeky kakariki parrot flew by under the bright kikorangi sky. The clouds turned poroporo purple, (indigo and violet) and the rain started to fall. 7. I like the Uenuku story better Dad.
