2 Standard K-ESS2-1 Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time. Clarification Statement Examples of qualitative observations could include descriptions of the weather (such as sunny, cloudy, rainy, and warm); examples of quantitative observations could include numbers of sunny, windy, and rainy days in a month. Examples of patterns could include that it is usually cooler in the morning than in the afternoon and the number of sunny days versus cloudy days in different months. Assessment Boundary: Assessment of quantitative observations is limited to whole numbers and relative measures such as warmer/ cooler.
3 Lesson Overview Weather Calendar After completion of this lesson student will be able to distinguish different types of weather that are common in the area where they live and learn. Students will also be able to relate the different weather patterns to different months and seasons. (ie winter has snow, summer has sun, spring has rain ) Students will also be able to
4 Materials Print out of a calendar (one per each student) Coloring and drawing materials (crayons) Visuals of the different weather conditions (rain, clouds, sun, snow, partial clouds with sun). Will need medium sizes with either magnets on the back or sticky tack to stick it onto the graph for the explain activity at the end of the month. Also need large laminated for students for elaborate activity.
5 Engage For engage, we will read What Will the Weather be Like Today by Paul Rogers Since we couldn t find a book that showed the change in weather over time or over the course of the day we would just talk after the book about how weather can change hour to hour, day to day, week to week, and month to month.
6 Explore For explore, we will use a calendar and have all of the students glue a picture of the weather (sunny, rainy, cloudy,..) on a daily basis either after lunch or around the afternoon but at the same time every day. We will have them look outside and observe what they see and glue on pictures of either sunny, sunny with clouds, cloudy, rainy, or snowing. They will also color the pictures which is explained in the next slide. March
7 Explore cont. Along with the calendar we will go over as a class and talk about the temperature for that day. To the right is what we would use to show the students the change in temperature from a day to day basis or even during the change during the day (depending on the class it could be two to three times a day). On the calendar the students can color the pictures the color that corresponds with temperature for that day; Hot red, Yellow warm, and Blue cold. Today is 45⁰F HOT 80⁰F and over WARM 50⁰F to 80⁰F COLD 50⁰F and under

9 Elaborate Weather Forecaster: students will watch clips of a local weather forecaster and recreate his forecast the teacher will hand out different weather cards (ie sunny, rainy, cloudy ) that correspond to what the forecaster showed in the forecast. the student will then take turns pretending they are forecasting the weather they have to the class (if they want). The next day the class can talk about the weather that was predicted for the class that day and talk about if it is correct or not.
10 Evaluate For evaluate, we will look at the charts that students have completed and ask questions. We will also go over at the end of the school year all of the charts that the class has and look for patterns like it was mostly cold in winter or Rainy in April. Students will also play a dress up game. Depending on the number of students in class; students will get into two or three lines and have a basket of different clothes that you would wear in different seasons(can be donations from families or the teachers or just dress up clothes). The teacher would call out either weather, like rainy or sunny, or a season/month like spring or September.
