1 Wie ist heute das Wetter? How is the weather today? Making a Weather Wheel Materials you will need o 1 sheet white cover stock (or other heavy printing paper) o Pattern page o Hole punch o 1 small paper fastener o Markers o Crayons or colored pencils (optional) Instructions o Print a copy of the pattern page onto white cover stock. o Cut out the weather wheel. o Using a marker, write Heute ist das Wetter. twice - once around the top and once around the bottom of the wheel. (See illustration above.) o Label each section of the wheel with one of the focus vocabulary words and illustrate appropriately using markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Try to choose words that fit the likely weather for this time of year in your area! o Cut out the arrow. Punch a hole near the back end of the arrow. Insert the paper fastener through the hole on the arrow, and then through the center of the wheel. Fasten the fastener loosely at the back of the wheel. o Now, look at the weather outside and set the arrow on your weather wheel to match today s weather! Heute ist das Wetter. 18

3 Lesen und Lernen Read and Learn Ich entdecke die Welt! Das Wetter In the United States, we measure temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. When it is 25 Fahrenheit (25 F) outside, it is very cold. In Germany, temperature is measured in degrees Celsius. When it is 25 Celsius (25 C), it is warm outside! Open your Ich entdecke die Welt: Das Wetter book to the first page - called Wie wird es warm auf der Erde - and look at the thermometer hanging on the side of the house. It shows that the outdoor temperature is 25 C. Visit this link: and use the provided Temperature Conversion Calculator to answer the following questions: o If it is 25 C, what is the temperature in Fahrenheit? o If it is 25 F, what temperature is it in Celsius? Read the first page of Ich entdecke die Welt: Das Wetter. Then read the sentences below. Are these statements true or false? Write Richtig (True) on the line if the sentence is true or Falsch (False) if the sentence is not true. Die Kinder spielen bei dem schönen Wetter draußen. The children play outside in the nice weather. Regen misst man mit einem Thermometer. A person measures rain with a thermometer. Man misst Wärme und Kälte mit einem Thermometer. A person measures warm and cold with a thermometer. Es ist 25 C warm. Es ist draußen sehr kalt. It is 25 C. It is very cold out. 20

4 Lesen und Lernen Read and Learn Ich entdecke die Welt! Das Wetter Now read the next page of your Ich entdecke die Welt: Das Wetter book: Wieso gibt es Sommer und Winter? Open up the little flaps around the sun. Do you know which season is which? Write the English name for each season next to the correct German word below: Frühling: Sommer: Herbst: Winter: Magst du lieber Sommer oder Winter? Do you like summer better or winter? Read the question, then circle your answer. Magst du lieber Sommer oder Winter? Ich mag. o Winter o Sommer Do you like summer better or winter? I like. o winter o summer 21

5 Das Wetter The Weather On a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture of your favorite season. Under your picture, write the name of the season in German. Save the picture in your notebook. How well do you know the weather words in German? Here is a quiz that will help you find out. Click on the link below to read a little rhyme about the weather: Here is a game that will help you practice your weather words. 22
