2 LONG AND RICH TRADITION 1891 were performed first meteorological measurements and observations; 1923 was organized first hydrometeorological station network; 1947 was established Hydrometeorological Service of National Republic of Macedonia; 1993 as independent country, Republic of Macedonia became a permanent member of the WMO; Today the Service carrying out and co-coordinating coordinating international obligations of Republic of Macedonia with its research and developing programme.

5 METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT - Meteorological Climatological Division - Weather Analysis and Forecast Division Meteorological network is consisted of: 262 meteorological stations as follows: 16 main, 19 regular, 26 phonological, 1 aerological and 200 precipitation stations. 2 automated weather stations.

6 Meteorological Climatological Division activities: - observations, control, processing of meteorological and agrometeorological data; - climate research; - urban climate research; - application of meteorological information and climate knowledge in the field of water management, agriculture, forestry, transportation, tion, urbanism, civil engineering,space planning tourism, protection of o environment and human health; - agrometeorological operative, informative methodological and research activities; - preparing information and forecasts on weather and climate influence over agricultural production especially at adverse weather situations (frost, drought and other disasters) etc.

10 - Hydrological Division - Ecological Division. HYDROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT Basic activities of Hydrological Division are: - measurements of hydrological parameters; - permanent monitoring of surface and groundwater level, discharge, sediment, water temperature ; - data control, processing and archiving in hydrological data base; - public informing and warning on development and appearance of hazardous hydrological phenomena; - making and issuing hydrological bases, reports, information, forecasts for various users; - permanent modernization of Hydrological Information System.

11 There are 225 National Hydrological Monitoring Stations function as stations for surface water (110) and groundwater (115).

14 ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION From 1964 has been performed systematic control of surface water quality, from 1974 there is monitoring network on air quality. Main activities: - air quality monitoring at 23 measuring points; - measuring of stationary sources emission; - monitoring and assessment of transboundary long-range distribution of air pollutants; - assessment of changes in the atmosphere especially of those pollutants which have great impact on human health; - monitoring of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of surface water at 20 measuring points; - periodical control of domestic and industrial waste water; - monitoring of chemical and toxicological water pollution and carrying out radiological and biological analyses

16 WEATHER MODIFICATION DEPARTMENT 30 years Hail Suppression Division operates with 3 meteorological radars and 250 hail suppression launching stations.

17 Telecommunication and Radar Technique Section together with Computer Section take part in international exchange of operative (real-time data) meteorological and hydrological reports on weather and water and prognostic products in Global Telecommunication System (GTS). 18 THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES RIVER MONITORING SYSTEM IN MACEDONIA RIMSYS Cooperation project between Switzerland Government and Macedonian Government through Ministry of Environment and Physical planning and Hydmet. Service Project scope: a) Strengthen capacity of monitoring on the water quantity and quality on the rivers in Macedonia especially for the transboundary water control; b) Modernization of 18 hydrological stations which are part from the national hydrological network, commissioning of an environmental monitoring laboratory in Skopje.

21 HMS of Macedonia has operatively started to use NNM Model since 02 February 2005, which is developed in Washington, USA

23 FUTURE PLANS AND ACTIVITIES The reorganization and transformation Re-definition of the status of hydmet service To follow the strategy of WMO and strengthening the national capacities acities for extreme weather events, climate changes and variations, agriculture ure meteorology Development of public weather services Modernization of the hydromet information system -Revitalization of the meteorological network infrastructure -Modernization of the meteorological stations and calibration of instruments -Establishment of automatic system for meteorological monitoring according to European standards -Adjustment of the programme for monitoring in accordance to transformation from central to local authority IMPROVEMENT OF THE WEATHER ANALYSYS AND FORECAST Improvement of GTS network, RMDCN, RETIM and SATELITE Communication for met data exchange and met products State of arts high resolution model (LME, ALADIN, ARPEGE, MM5, ETA.) The VCP request for donation of Meteorological radar Development of Nowcasting system and estab.. radar network Definition of thresholds for adverse weather phenomena
