2 FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK Giving Thanks November finds the second quarter of the school year under way! Eisenhower School had a very busy and productive October, from the Storm Hockey Team s GOAL assembly to parent-teacher conferences, from Sheldon Art Gallery tour to Red Ribbon Week and FUN NIGHT. I would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone that participated in making these events a success. Parent support has always been a tremendous asset here at our school. Your support and participation has meant so much to the staff and students. The month of November has several important events and activities that I would like to bring to your attention. School picture retakes are on Friday, Nov. 4 in the afternoon. Anyone who is dissatisfied with their pictures may return the entire packet for a retake at no charge. You must return the entire packet with an explanation of what you would like to be corrected. All retakes will be the same pose, background, and package as the original order. Any student that was absent on school picture day will also get their pictures taken on retake day. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Some Important Reminders Winter Weather is fast approaching The time of year is rapidly approaching when winter storms may cause the closing of schools. Please be aware of the Weather Announcements so you are aware of the procedures for school closings for the North Platte Public Schools. With the approach of colder weather it is important that students dress properly for the weather. Students will go outdoors for recess every day unless it is raining or snowing or the wind chill is below 10. Winter Weather Emergency Closing Procedures Weather conditions during the winter may necessitate a change in the normal hours school is in session. The decision to close schools, delay starting times, or dismiss early is made by the Central Office Administration. School closing information will be announced via the school district s phone messaging system and by the following radio stations: KX 104 FM KELN 97.1 FM KOGA 930 AM KODY 1240 AM KJLT 94.9 FM and 970 AM KNPQ FM KOOQ 1410 AM KZTL 93.5 FM KRNP FM KHAQ 98.5 FM KMCX FM 99.7 The Lake FM KOGA 106 FM Closing information will also be announced on TV stations KNOP channel 2 and NTV channel 6.

3 School Closing. If a decision is made to close schools, the announcement will be made by the local radio stations and Channel 2 by approximately 7:00 a.m. The decision not to have school is made by the superintendent after he has made the following contacts, when appropriate: The City Street Department to check the street conditions in the city The school maintenance staff to determine if they can manage snow removal in the immediate areas of schools and school entries The area station of the National Weather Service for an estimate of the length and severity of the storm or cold weather Delayed Starting Time. In some cases, it may be advisable to delay starting times to allow more time for snow removal. Announcements to this effect will be carried by local stations by approximately 7 a.m. Early Dismissal. Sometimes weather worsens during the school hours, making it advisable to dismiss students before the regular dismissal time. It shall be the philosophy of the District to avoid early dismissal if at all possible except in extreme cases. Parents who wish to remove their children during inclement weather may do so. In the event of an early dismissal, the information will be announced by the local radio stations. Parents will be asked to pick up their children as soon as possible. The final decision as to whether a child should attend school or stay at home is the responsibility of the parents. TRAFFIC SAFETY The North Loop #1 will be used to drop off ALL students K-5 and to pick up Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd grade students and siblings. The East Loop #2 to pick up for 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grade students and siblings. The lead car in line must proceed as far forward (east) (if using the center loop#1) or as far south (if using the east loop#2) as possible before pulling to the curb to exit or pick up children. Please keep the left lane open for drive through traffic in all loops!! If coming before 3:20 p.m. you may park in the east or west lots to wait for your child...please talk with your children so they know which Loop to find you. Parents should never park in the pick-up lane. Please be respectful of others and use the parking lots on the East and West ends of the buildings. Remember do not park in the fire zone, bus loading areas, or Handicap parking at any time! This is reserved for the school bus and day care vans and must be kept open in accordance with State Fire and Safety Laws. Also, please advise others who may be dropping off or picking up your children of these guidelines. Police do issue traffic tickets for parking in these areas... even if for only a moment. $ fine is worth walking a few more steps.

4 Do not park in front of the building close to drop off or pick up times as this causes traffic jams. Please use the parking lots on the East or West ends of the building if you need to come into the building or leave your car for any reason. Our main objectives are: Keeping traffic moving as smoothly as possible through the Loops. Getting our children to the sidewalks quickly and safely loaded in your vehicle. Remember to Buckle UP!! Your passengers are very important to all of us! Steppin Out for Education Event at Eisenhower I want to share the results of the Steppin Out for Education event: 24% of Eisenhower School Participated, which is an increase from last year s 7% of students Eisenhower students raised $1,837.83, a 16% increase from last year s $1, Thanks to Michelle Wadsworth for all her efforts organizing the event for Eisenhower The NPPS Foundation will present a check to Eisenhower Elementary for $1, th grader Alexus Garrick raised the most money and received an ipod shuffle for her efforts. News from Physical Education Fall testing is underway; we are very happy with the results so far, keep up the good work. Scooter unit is coming up followed by mats. I really appreciate all the hard work the students at Eisenhower put in to being physically fit. It is an ongoing process, something that requires daily effort. Mike McGuire "Train Hard, Dream Big"

5 MUSIC NOTES Recycle those Halloween costumes! We are starting to collect costumes for the spring musical for third, fourth, and fifth grades. Here s some samples of what we re looking for: dragons, knights, princes (charming or otherwise ), a fish, fisherman and fisherwoman (fishing vests??), Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel (+ wig!), Lederhosen - or suspenders/shorts, workout clothes tops, pants and sweatbands. If you d like to loan us a costume (that s great) or donate a costume (even better!), just drop it off at the school office and tell the secretary to please get it to Mrs. McKain. More exciting news.julie Jacobsen has generously applied for and received a grant for our fifth graders to attend a concert/workshop put on by the Nebraska Brass Ensemble at the Neville Center on December 5. We ll be reviewing our instrument families in November to prepare for this be ready for your fifth grader to want to participate in band next year after hearing this fantastic group!
